You're now ready to move into your country home. But before you unpack your goods, keep in mind these few pointers:
- Take a good look at the property, the buildings and the services available. Prioritize what needs to be fixed immediately and what can wait. You might even want to consider adding extra funds to your mortgage to cover renovation and maintenance costs.
- Make sure to purchase any emergency equipment you need. An air compressor, generator and fire protection are necessary investments that you can't live without.
- If you have school children that need to be bussed, consider building a small shelter to protect them from the elements.
- If your rural property requires regular courier or specialized mail services, and they don't deliver to your door, make arrangements with an area business or post office for drop off and pick up.
- Get to know your neighbours. Make the rounds in your area to introduce yourself and your family. It not only creates a network of assistance when you need it, but it also generates a sense of community.
- Find out from an agricultural or livestock specialist what you need to do to upgrade your outbuildings and equipment to government safety standards.
