RBC Scholarships for Graduating Medical & Dental Students

 

2006 RBC Medical & Dental Student Scholarship Recipients

Four graduating medical students and one dental student are the recipients of RBC Financial Group's annual Graduating Medical & Dental Student Scholarship. The awards are worth $3,000 each.

The following recipients were selected for their exceptional quality of care and community involvement:

Atlantic Region - Dr. André MacLean Bernard from Halifax, Nova Scotia
Quebec Region - Dr. Julie Lim from Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Québec
Ontario Region - Dr. Amy Hoi Ying Cheng from Mississauga, Ontario
Prairies Region - Dr. Brian Stuart Rambaransingh from Calgary, Alberta
BC Region - Dr. Kelly Cox from Bowen Island, British Columbia

ATLANTIC REGION

Dr. André MacLean Bernard Dr. André MacLean Bernard
Dr. André MacLean Bernard from Halifax, NS has been selected the recipient of an RBC Scholarship for Graduating Medical & Dental Students. Dr. Bernard is graduating from the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University. His outstanding quality of care, commitment to community and defined personal goals led to his selection.

Dr. Bernard is driven by his passions for anesthesia and critical care together with a zeal for health policy, management and global health.

He has dedicated a remarkable amount of time to representing his peers across Canada and the world. He acted in the offices of President, Vice President Finance and Vice President International Programs & Partnerships for the Canadian Federation of Medical Students, representing over 6,000 medical students across the country. He also acted as Director of the Canadian Medical Association and a volunteer with both the Canadian Council for UNESCO and the World Health Organization Regional Office for the Western Pacific.

Dr. Bernard’s reference letters speak of his above-average knowledge base, ability to perform physical exams and communicate with patients and family members.

Dr. Bernard will begin his residency in anesthesia at Dalhousie University.

QUEBEC

Dr. Julie Lim Dr. Julie Lim
Dr. Julie Lim, from Dollard-des-Ormeaux, QC has been selected the recipient of an RBC Scholarship for Graduating Medical & Dental Students. Dr. Lim is graduating from the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Montreal. Her outstanding quality of care, commitment to community and defined personal goals led to her selection.

Dr. Lim is committed to helping the vulnerable and marginalized of society.
Her letters of recommendation speak of her exceptional dedication, compassion and patience.

Dr. Lim was chosen to do an internship at Ste-Justine Hospital where she cared for children with physical and mental illness. She also provided dental care to street kids at the dental clinic at CLSC des Faubourgs.

At the Institut Universitaire de Gériatrie de Montréal, she provided dental care and prosthetic repairs for many patients who were mentally and physically challenged and bedridden.

Dr. Lim is able to care for a diverse range of patients as she speaks French, English and Chinese fluently.

Dr. Lim has been accepted into a residency program through McGill University at Royal-Victoria Hospital. She plans to focus on pediatrics or geriatrics -- two ends of the age spectrum that would greatly benefit from her excellent personalized care.

ONTARIO

Dr. Amy Hoi Ying Cheng Dr. Amy Hoi Ying Cheng
Dr. Amy Hoi Ying Cheng from Mississauga, ON has been selected the recipient of an RBC Scholarship for Graduating Medical & Dental Students. Dr. Cheng is graduating from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto. Her outstanding quality of care, commitment to community and defined personal goals led to her selection.

Dr. Cheng is the Founding Director of Health by Empowerment – a National Non-Profit Organization that trains community leaders and health educators in developing countries. Under her direction, one of its primary initiatives -- the Community Health Outreach Program -- sent 30 Ontario medical and undergraduate students to Guyana, and trained more than 100 Guyanese volunteers to become health educators. Dr. Cheng spent 7 months in Guyana on this project.

Dr. Cheng is dedicated to improving the quality of and access to health care amongst under-serviced populations. She was part of the medical team that provided primary and emergency care to over 200 members of the indigenous population in Ecuador. She has also been researching sustainable care programs for people living with HIV/AIDS in developing countries

Dr. Cheng will pursue post-graduate training in Emergency Medicine at the University of Toronto. She hopes to obtain a Master’s of Public Health (MPH) and become a specialist in International Emergency Medicine.

PRAIRIES

Dr. Brian Stuart Rambaransingh Dr. Brian Stuart Rambaransingh
Dr. Brian Stuart Rambaransingh from Calgary, AB has been selected the recipient of an RBC Scholarship for Graduating Medical & Dental Students. Dr. Rambaransingh is graduating from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Calgary. His outstanding quality of care, commitment to community and defined personal goals led to his selection.

Dr. Rambaransingh is dedicating his career to diagnostic imaging. He has conducted extensive research into improving mammographic reports, suggesting new terms that are clearer for physicians and patients. The result is less reliance on biopsies, a lighter burden on community resources and more reassured patients. His scientific writing is lauded in letters of support and has been accepted for publication in radiologist's journals. His paper on improving care of patients with head and neck cancer was presented in Hong Kong. It suggests that surgery may not be necessary after chemo and radiation therapy.

Dr. Rambaransingh is driven by the need to improve patients’ quality of life. He dedicates much one-on-one time with patients suffering from ulcerative colitis, a condition he has battled for some time.

Dr. Rambaransingh has been accepted into the Radiology Residency Program at the University of Calgary Foothills Medical Centre.

WEST

Dr. Kelly Cox Dr. Kelly Cox
Dr. Kelly Cox from Bowen Island, BC has been selected the recipient of an RBC Scholarship for Graduating Medical & Dental Students. Dr. Cox is graduating from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia. Her outstanding quality of care, commitment to community and defined personal goals led to her selection.

Dr. Cox is dedicating her life’s work to providing medical care for children, specifically those with terminal cancer. She has contributed countless hours to volunteering at care facilities such as Canuck Place Children’s Hospice serving children and families living with life-threatening diseases; the BC Children’s Hospital, and the Canadian Cancer Society’s Camp Goodtimes Oncology Camp.

Dr. Cox’s letters of support cite her outstanding critical judgment and decision making around the acute and chronic management of exceedingly ill children. At the same time they speak of her sensitivity towards communicating with patients and their families.

Dr. Cox has broadened her field research through volunteering at a pediatric HIV/AIDS clinic and ward in Kampala Uganda.

Academic awards and published medical research round out her medical qualifications.

Dr. Cox will be specializing in pediatric oncology. She has been accepted to do her residency in pediatrics at Dalhousie University.
