Leaving Your House Safe and Secure

Here are a few tips that might help you leave your house safe and secure:

  • Arrange for snow shoveling and junk-mail pick-up.
  • Have your mail forwarded and cancel newspaper(s) and magazines.
  • Set timers on lights and the television.
  • Store valuables out of sight, preferably in a safe deposit box.
  • Leave an answering machine message that says you are unable to come to the phone, not that you are away.
  • You may want to consider a house-sitting service.
  • If you have a security system, arrange for a friend or neighbour to act as the contact for the security company.
  • Arrange to have your home heating system, plumbing, etc. checked regularly, in accordance with your insurance policy.
