Shipping Guidelines for Hazardous Items
Before your moving day, make sure you know which items you are allowed to ship and those you cannot. Safely dispose of anything that you cannot ship or ask local friends or family to take these things for you.
Please note: The list below is a guideline only. It is strongly advised that you review the hazardous materials regulations at the Transport Canada Web site.
Hazardous items that are illegal to ship
The following items are not safe to ship and should not be placed in the moving truck or mailed under any circumstances:
Gases and Propellants
- Gasoline, propane, kerosene, naphtha or lighter fluid
- Liquefied petroleum gases of all types
- Aerosol cans not classified as personal toiletries
- Barbecue tanks, oxygen, helium or acetylene
- Butane lighters
- Fire extinguishers
Explosives
- Ammunition
- Fireworks
- Flares
- Blasting caps
- Industrial explosives and detonation devices
Yard and Gardening Supplies
- Pesticides containing a base of arsenic, strychnine or cyanide
- Fertilizers containing ammonium nitrate
- Pool chemicals and chlorine
- Wood preservatives
Corrosives
- Batteries, alkaline or acid (except a car battery installed in a car being moved)
Household Chemicals
- Bleach, peroxide or disinfectants
- Cleaning fluids such as ammonia, Varsol, turpentine, oven cleaner, lye and acids
- Pesticides, herbicides and fumigants
- Oil-based paints and thinners
- Chemistry sets
- Any flammable liquids
Flammable Solids
- Matches
- Solid fuel and BBQ starter tablets
- Hay, straw or wood chips
- Oily rags
Hazardous items you may legally ship
You MAY legally ship these items:
- Household cleaners
- Nail polish remover and perfume
- Non-flammable art supplies
- Photographic chemicals (used for hobby only)
