Winning images from coast to coast
Handing out prize cheques to winners in the RBC Photography Contest required the assistance of RBC staff from coast to coast. Winning photographs captured subjects in all corners of the country – from a blooming flower crop in British Columbia to a dairy farm in Nova Scotia and many locations in between.
Lisa Cock’s prize winning photograph Pasture Palswas taken on her family’s dairy operation in Pictou County, Nova Scotia. The picture of her 3-year-old son Aadan looking into the pasture tells a familiar story in rural life – that of a way of life passed down through generations.
“My husband has been working the farm since he could lift a shovel,” says Lisa. “And now my three-year-old son is helping out the same as his dad did. It makes me so proud.”
Though the content is entirely different, Erinne Fenwick’s prize winning photograph Barn Doortells a similar story. Erinne photographed the weathered door not far from her family’s farm at Bluffton, Alberta, as a way of documenting rural history in western Canada.
“It’s a tribute to my grandparents and the previous generations who laid the foundations for rural society in western Canada,” she explains. Erinne is now studying art at the University of Alberta and says growing up in the country is a constant source of inspiration.
Nearer the Pacific Ocean, Fiona Jansen photographed Beauty Besiegedon the 37-acre flower farm her family runs in Langley, British Columbia. The photo captures a poignant moment in the life of her family’s operation. She was only able to capture the field of 50,000 mums blooming because a sad fate awaited them. The flowers, which normally ship before they bloom, had to be destroyed because of white rust infection.
“It was the culmination of a really tough year for us and our staff, but we gained a stronger connection through this adversity,” explains Fiona. RBC congratulates all the winners. Their photographs can be viewed on the RBC website at www.rbcroyalbank.com/agriculture. The 2007 RBC Agriculture Calendar will be available at RBC branches across the country before the end of December 2006.
