Bill Payments

Before you can make bill payments, you'll need to set up a list of payees. Please follow this procedure once you are signed in to Online Banking:

  • Select the "Pay Bills & Transfer Funds" link
  • Click on "Create/Update payee list"
  • Click on "Add New Payee"
  • Enter a key word from the payee's name and click on "Search"
  • Click on the button beside the payee you wish to select, then click on "Continue"
  • Enter your correct account number for this payee and click on "Continue"
  • Review your selection and then click on "Confirm" if your information is correct
  • You are now ready to make your payment.

The "Payment History" button on the main menu will provide you with payments made in the last six months in chronological order.

To cancel a bill payment after clicking on the "Confirm" button, you must advise us by telephone prior to 6:00 pm your local time. Please call RBC Royal Bank Online Services at 1-800-769-2555.

Note: Payments to other RBC Royal Bank customers are instantaneous and as such are final and not reversible. RBC Royal Bank will not reverse or otherwise correct such payments.

If you enrolled in Online Banking after March 15, 2001 you must enter your one time Activation Code in order to pay credit cards issued by another lender or pay another RBC Royal Bank customer online. This Activation Code is mailed to your address after you enrol in Online Banking.

RBC Royal Bank Visa* Payments

Visa payments to a RBC Royal Bank Canadian dollar Visa can be made either through the "Transfer" function or through the "Payments" function if you have set up Visa as a "Payee".

RBC Royal Bank Canadian dollar Visa payments are immediate but Visa processing requires two business days to update on Online Banking. If you receive a confirmation number, the payment was made and interest is adjusted accordingly.

At this time, US Visa accounts can be paid using a telephone banking agent, (1-800-769-2555) or at your local branch.

Payments to Other RBC Royal Bank Customers

When making payments within Online Banking, you have the ability to move money to other personal or business RBC Royal Bank Customers online, real time. Click Pay bills and transfer funds from your Account Balances page and then select "Other RBC Royal Bank customer" from the To: list. Here is some key information that will help you use this new feature.

  1. The amount you can transfer is subject to maximum daily limits associated with your RBC Royal Bank client card.
  2. Both the account you are sending money from and the account that is receiving money must be accessible at a bank machine.
  3. Once the payment is made, it is immediate and can't be reversed by RBC Royal Bank.
  4. It is a good idea to confirm the date, time and amount of the payment with the person you sent money to.
  5. You can send money to other personal or business RBC Royal Bank Customers through Online Banking. This feature is not available through Telephone Banking or an RBC Banking machine at this time.

Here is the information you will need to make a payment.

  1. The name of the person you wish to send money to, exactly as it appears on their account statement or RBC Royal Bank Client Card. Please keep in mind that sometimes the name on their cheque may differ from our account files. It's a good idea to verify the exact name with the person or business.
  2. Their Account Number
  3. Their Branch Number

To pay another RBC Royal Bank Customer, simply sign into Online Banking and select "Pay bills and transfer funds" from the Account Balances page. Enter the amount, the account you want to pay from and select "Other RBC Royal Bank Customer" in the "To" box. You will be prompted to enter the customer's name, account number and branch number for the account you are sending money to. From there, it's just like paying a bill, select the account the funds are coming from, click to confirm and a reference number will be provided as confirmation. Other RBC Royal Bank Customers can be added as PAYEES on your PAYEE LIST either through the above method or through the "Create/update payee list", like any other PAYEE. This way, you will only need to enter the information once.

Here is how to add Other RBC Royal Bank Customers to your PAYEE LIST.

  1. After selecting "Pay bills and transfer funds" select "Add other RBC Royal Bank customer to payee list"
  2. Enter the account information for the Other RBC Royal Bank Customer

Once an Other RBC Royal Bank Customer has been added to your PAYEE LIST, you can post date or schedule recurring payments. Simply select the PAYEE from your list and enter the information and select the date or dates on which you would like the transaction(s) to occur.

Stop Payment Requests

  1. Entering a Stop Payment Request
To enter a Stop payment request select the account on which the payment is drawn from the 'Account Balances' page. From the 'Account Details' page, ensure that the payment has not already been processed and then select the "Stop Payment/Cheque" link from the right hand action panel. Once you have accessed the First page of the Stop Payment Request transaction simply follow the screen flow. Be sure to read the important "Before You Begin section".
  2. Service Fees for Stop Payment Requests
There is a $10 fee for each Stop Payment Request that you enter, unless it is included as part of your banking account. To find out if your banking account includes free Stop Payment Requests, click on the "Service Charge Information" link located on the Stop Payment Request page.

To stop a series of pre-authorized payments or cheques, a separate stop payment must be entered for each item in the series and a $10 fee will be charged for each individual pre-authorized stop payment requests.
  3. End of day processing times
If you are entering a Stop Payment Request after 9:30 pm (Local Time), on a weekend or holiday, be aware that it will not stop a payment going through the account on that day or evening. It will take effect on the next business day. If you enter a stop payment during these times, you should check your account history the next business day to ensure that the payment has not already gone through your account.
  4. Restrictions for Stop Payment Requests
It is important that you enter the correct information. This process cannot detect payment or cheque information that is entered incorrectly (for example the wrong amount or cheque serial number) so have your chequebook with you to make sure the information you input is correct.

If you are unsure of any of the cheque information contact Royal Direct or visit your branch.

Stops Payment Requests cannot be placed on RBC Royal Bank Loan or Mortgage Payments and certified cheques.
  5. Alternative methods to enter Stop payment requests
You can make a stop payment by calling Royal99 or visiting a Royal Bank branch.
  6. Changing the stop payment request after it has been submitted
In order to make any changes to a Stop Payment Request submitted through Online Banking or to check on its status please contact Royal99 or visit your local branch with your Stop Payment Reference number.

  • Select the start date for the transaction
  • If you would like the transaction to occur more than once, select "More than once" and fill in the required information

Viewing Account Activities

You do not need special software to view transaction history. To view your account statement or activities, click on your account name (accounts names are underlined and normally coloured blue). You have the option of viewing activity for the last 2 weeks or all transactions on file.

Depending on the date requested, accounts with statements have between 15 and 45 days of transaction history available. Fifteen days following the printing of your statement, items on that statement can no longer be viewed through Online Banking. Transactions from 30 days prior to the start of your new statement are deleted.

Similarly, accounts with bankbooks have between 30 and 60 days of transaction history available. Thirty days following your monthly cycle date, the previous month's transaction history is deleted.

Any transactions (ABM or Interac* Direct Payment) that are made after 6 p.m. Eastern time will appear with the date of the following business day. Purchases made prior to 6 p.m. Eastern time on a business day will appear with that day's date.

When transactions are processed through Online Banking they will first appear as PTB (Personal Touch Banking) transactions. This provides you with real-time balances and transactions. On the following day, these transaction codes will be updated with the appropriate details included.

Copy to Accounting Software

Online Banking is compatible with the following Financial Planning Software programs: Quicken*, QuickBooks*, Microsoft®1 Money and Makisoft*.

To download your transactions into one of these compatible software packages, you will need to activate a download button. To activate this button, please follow these simple steps found on the Download Instructions page.
