Downsizing Your Home

Downsizing without Moving

If you need to reduce your expenses, but don't want to give up your current home, you can:

  • Share your home. You share your home with another person, such as a retired friend or family member, who pays a share of the expenses and may also help with chores and maintenance.
  • Rent out a room. A student or a young single person could help you with heavy chores in exchange for reduced rent.
  • Rent out an apartment. You could convert a part of your house (such as a basement or a garage) into an efficiency apartment.
  • Install a garden suite. If you have enough land, you may want to consider renting out a pre-fabricated house which can be moved or sold later on. You'll need to check with your city hall first about zoning by-laws and other municipal requirements.
