Local Heroes - A Festival on the Rise

The National Screen Institute's Local Heroes Film Festival celebrated it's third year with its most successful campaign. Based in Winnipeg and running from February 24th to March 4th, the festival is a well run, up and coming event focused on the Canadian film industry. As a Platinum sponsor, and the only financial institution present, RBFG confirmed its reputation as the leader in providing services to the film and television industry in Canada

While the festival has a strong focus on emerging filmmakers, it also attracts a cross section of established industry players as delegates and presenters. The timing of the festival and list of participants provides an excellent opportunity for many producers looking for co-production partners to meet. The event also acts as a forum for broadcasters, distributors and government agencies to assess the direction of film making in Canada and receive feedback directly from the next generation of industry players.

This year the festival drew 250 delegates, up from 150 in 2000. Based on the successful outcome of the festival and feedback from the participants, most of them will be back in 2002 and will be encouraging their colleagues to attend as well. Plans are for the festival to continue growing, doubling in size over the next three years.

The festival includes a cross section of events including:

  • Screening of Shorts from NSI's Movie Camp
  • Cineplex Entertainment Drama Prize Winners Screening
  • A series of Canadian short films
  • A series of Canadian Feature Films
  • Writer, Director and Producer Master Classes
  • Luncheons with prominent industry players
  • A series of sidebar events including:
    • Prairie Producer and Broadcaster Roundtable
    • Inter-provincial Co-production Meetings
    • Manitoba Motion Picture Industry Association Blizzard Awards
  • A number of networking and social events

The National Screen Institute is one of four federally recognized organizations that provide training in the motion picture industry for writers, producers and directors. The school has a focus in Western Canada, but runs programs on a national basis. The Institute has a high profile Board of Directors with executive representation from virtually every major player in the Canadian film and broadcast industry.

As the Local Heroes Festival continues to grow, RBC Royal Bank's participation will be an excellent opportunity to work within the smaller communities and generate new networks within Media & Entertainment across the country.
