Planning Your Move

Once You Move In

Now that you've taken possession of your new home, it's time to get your house in order:

  1. Get the names and addresses, payment dates, account numbers and amounts you have to pay for your mortgage, taxes, condo maintenance and utility charges.
  2. Notify everyone about your change of address - from the post office to credit card companies to the provincial health insurer. Don't forget the provincial driver's license and motor vehicle branch; failing to do so could lead to a fine.
  3. Where "911" doesn't exist, obtain the emergency numbers of police, fire, ambulance, hospital and poison information centres.
  4. Determine garbage and recycling days.
  5. Arrange to get the interest on your deposit, if your offer provides for it.
  6. Change the locks, or at least the tumblers, on all doors.
  7. Consider upgrading the locks to deadbolts for greater home security.
