Chip and PIN migration

Chip and PIN is the next evolution of electronic payments, helping to make an already safe credit card payment system even more secure. This evolution is taking place around the world. Over 86 countries are currently using chip and PIN technology, and migration programs are underway in at least 45 other countries including Canada.

Chip technology has been a feature of the RBC® Platinum Visa* Avion card since 2003. During the next few years, we will be converting all other RBC Royal Bank® Visa cards to chip and PIN technology. At the same time, Canadian stores and services will be fitted with terminals that process chip and PIN cards.

What is a chip and PIN Visa card?

A chip and PIN Visa card carries an embedded microchip (chip) that safely stores confidential information such as your Visa account number and personal identification number (PIN). A chip is impossible to copy, and a PIN provides additional protection above and beyond the chip as only you know your PIN.

Chip and PIN cards together with chip terminals make a secure transaction system even more secure by validating both the card and the cardholder electronically.

How it works

Making a purchase with a chip and PIN Visa card is easy and secure. At a chip-enabled terminal you simply:

Step 1: Insert your card into the chip terminal.
Step 1
Insert your card into the chip terminal.

Step 2: Enter your PIN. For the duration of the transaction, leave your card inserted in the terminal and follow the instructional prompts.
Step 2
Enter your PIN. For the duration of the transaction, leave your card inserted in the terminal and follow the instructional prompts.

Step 3: Upon completion of the transaction, take your receipt and remove your card from the chip terminal.
Step 3
Upon completion of the transaction, take your receipt and remove your card from the chip terminal.

Because your identity is verified with your chip card and PIN, you aren’t required to sign a receipt when making a purchase at a chip terminal. And, since you insert your card in the chip terminal, your card should never leave your sight, reducing the risk of fraud.

More about using a PIN with chip cards

Purchases made at chip terminals with a chip and PIN card will no longer require your signature. For stores and services without chip terminals, you will continue to be protected by swiping your card’s magnetic stripe and signing a receipt as you do today. Transactions made online or over the telephone will not require your PIN.

Similar to your debit card, you should take the same steps to protect your chip card PIN:

  • Never disclose your PIN to anyone.
  • Choose a PIN that’s easy for you to remember, but avoid using numbers tied to your date of birth, address, social insurance number, phone number, etc.
  • Do not write your PIN down or store it electronically.
  • If you suspect that your PIN has been compromised, change it as soon as possible by visiting any RBC Royal Bank branch.
  • Read our Straight Talk® brochure on financial fraud to find out more ways you can protect your information.

Continue using your current card — It’s business as usual

You can keep using your current Visa card at any store or service terminal while the migration of cards and terminals is taking place. To ensure a smooth transition to the chip card and continued acceptance of your card, all Visa chip cards will contain both a chip and magnetic stripe.

We will send you a replacement card in the next few years that is chip and PIN enabled. No action is required on your part.

Important: Visa card transactions with current cards are secure with features such as the magnetic stripe, a unique three-digit code on the back of the card and the Visa Zero Liability policy. In addition, you have the option to enrol in programs like Verified by Visa, Credit Alert®1 and CardAssist Plus~. RBC continually upgrades its fraud detection systems to protect cardholders and will continue with current fraud prevention practices that protect cardholders, whether they have a magnetic stripe or a chip and PIN Visa card.
