British Columbia, Yukon and the Territories

Jacqueline Holding Jacqueline "Blaike" Holding, a recent graduate from St. John Brebeuf Regional Secondary School in Abbotsford, BC has been selected as a recipient for an RBC Royal Bank Financial Lifeskills Scholarship. The $2,007 award will help her achieve her goal of becoming a Motivational Speaker. Jacqueline is enrolled in a Bachelor of Arts with a major in History at University College of The Fraser Valley, BC.

When Blaike Holding was five years old she contracted meningitis. As a result she lost both arms below the elbow and both legs above the knee. The Wars Amps of Canada and BC Children’s Hospital were there to help her every step of the way. Today Blaike is involved in many organizations in her school and community. An accomplished athlete, Blaike has won medals at the BC Winter Games and the BC Summer Games. Driven to give back to the community, she volunteers at the BC Children’s Hospital, the BC Lions Society, The War Amps of Canada, and the Chilliwack Minor Baseball and Hockey Associations. Recently, Blaike had a car modified to suit her needs and is driving all over town.

Blaike submitted photos of medals she won at the BC Winter Games, as well as a list of sports and other organizations she has volunteered for.


Khalil Jessa Khalil Jessa, a recent graduate from Southridge School in Surrey, BC has been selected as a recipient for an RBC Royal Bank Financial Lifeskills Scholarship. The $2,007 award will help him achieve his goal of becoming a UN Diplomat. Khalil is enrolled in a Bachelor of Arts at the University of McGill, QC with a major in International Development and a minor in Economics.

Khalil Jessa has a deep interest in international relations and politics. Since grade 10 he has participated in a number of model United Nations simulations and has earned the designation of Best Delegate. In response to having no large-scale event in his community, he created his own Model UN conference that attracted 50 students from the Lower Mainland. He has since been chosen to staff larger gatherings. Khalil recently immersed himself in the week-long Forum for Young Canadians on Parliament Hill, the highlight of which was to meet MPs, diplomats and senators. For three years, Khalil has gained much practical experience in assisting large-scale fundraising events for Child Aid International.

Khalil submitted the proposal, business plan, newspaper articles, handbook and website for the Surry Model UN.


Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba

Kara Nadeau Kara Nadeau, a recent graduate from St. Mary's Academy in Winnipeg, MB has been selected as a recipient for an RBC Royal Bank Financial Lifeskills Scholarship. The $2,007 award will help her achieve her goal of becoming a Science Researcher in Agriculture. Kara is enrolled in a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture at the University of Saskatchewan, SK.

Kara Nadeau was raised in a small town in rural Manitoba where she developed a love of agriculture. She has participated in many science fairs as well as independent research in the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada laboritory facilities. Both have earned her respect and accolades in the community. In school, she was active in public speaking, drama and dance. She was also leader of the Mission Club which raises money for people in need. Kara and her sister created JK Camp and run the camp at their home for children in their community. Kara also offers swimming lessons for her neighborhood.

Kara submitted Manitoba Saskatoons: A New Source of Antioxidants and Alfalfa: Potential Source of the Health Ingredient Lutein. She conducted these award-winning independent research projects at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. The research revealed that adding value to crops in agriculture has nutritional benefits.


Miles Aronson Miles Aronson, a recent graduate from The Centre for Learning @ Home in Okotoks, AB has been selected as a recipient for an RBC Royal Bank Financial Lifeskills Scholarship. The $2,007 award will help him achieve his goal of becoming a Medical Doctor. Miles is enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine with a major in Health & Society at the University of Calgary, AB.

Miles Aronson has a passion for helping people. In 2002, he created Spread the Love, a charitable organization that utilizes communities to combat hunger. With a mission statement to “inspire and recruit youth so that they may lead their own communities in providing hundreds of sandwiches to the homeless and hungry on a monthly basis,” the program has delivered over 17,000 meals in Alberta. There are numerous chapters in Calgary alone and others are taking root in British Columbia, Ontario and Nova Scotia. Miles has received the Premier’s Citizenship Award (Alberta) the Provincial Millennium Excellence Award and the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Citizenship Medal for his innovative and far-reaching program. In 2006 he was named as one of Canada’s Top 20 Under 20. Miles will continue to expand Spread the Love while pursuing medicine.

Miles submitted his How To manual, designed to support youth leaders.


Ontario

Sarah Schumann Johns Sarah Schumann Johns, a recent graduate from Iroquois Ridge High School in Oakville, ON has been selected as a recipient for an RBC Royal Bank Financial Lifeskills Scholarship. The $2,007 award will help her achieve her goal of becoming a Teacher of Special Education Students. Sarah is enrolled in a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Education with a major in Humanities at Brock University, ON.

Sarah Schumann Johns has been involved in the Girl Guides of Canada since she was five years old. This experience culminated in an outreach project at the Halton Women’s Shelter where she created and implemented craft kits for resident children. She also wrote a children’s story to be used with the two youngest levels of Guiding, to promote self confidence and tolerance. Through Rotary International and the World Health Organization, Sarah traveled to Accra Ghana to assist in the immunization of children against polio. Closer to home, Sarah has worked as a camp counselor for Kerry’s Place Autism Camp, where she learned the perseverance and patience required for her career.

Sarah submitted a children’s’ short story promoting self-confidence and acceptance of differences between individuals. Sarah also submitted several Craft Kits she created for the Halton Women's Shelter.


Corey Bricks Corey Bricks, a recent graduate from Westmount Collegiate Institute in Thornhill, ON has been selected as a recipient for an RBC Royal Bank Financial Lifeskills Scholarship. The $2,007 award will help him achieve his goal of becoming a Cardiologist. Corey is enrolled at University of Western Ontario, ON in the Biomedical Sciences Program with a major in Molecular and Cell Biology and a minor in Spanish Language & Linguistics.

Corey Bricks is a talented linguist with a deep interest in helping people. He has spent over 200 hours volunteering for Free the Children. As an executive member, his tasks include planning the logistics behind all fundraising events. Corey was also selected to be a member of the Peer Mediation Group at Westmount Collegiate where he helped students solve their conflicts. In addition, as preparation for his medical career, Corey has volunteered at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto and York Central Hospital in Richmond Hill, where he assisted the nursing staff, talked to patients, delivered blood samples and did paper work. Corey is also pursuing studies in French and Spanish, which will broaden his medical outreach in the community.

Corey submitted a project that he completed in grade 12 biology on Cystic Fibrosis.


Quebec and the Maritimes

Samantha Milner Samantha Milner, a recent graduate from Beaconsfield High School in Beaconsfield, QC has been selected as a recipient for an RBC Royal Bank Financial Lifeskills Scholarship. The $2,007 award will help her achieve her goal of becoming an Entrepreneur. Samantha is enrolled in the Social Sciences program at John Abbott College, QC.

Samantha Milner is an entrepreneur with a philanthropic streak. At the age of eleven, she started a company called Sassy Sam's and developed a dog and cat gourmet cookie mix. She donated a portion of the profits to the Montreal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). Over the years, Samantha has branched out into fashion accessories and currently employs two adults, six sales representatives, and seasonal staff. Her corporate giving has grown as well. To date, she has donated $20,000 to Dans La Rue (a program for street kids), $11,000 to M.A.D.D. as well as $6,000 to the SPCA. She has established a successful jewelry line to support the Canadian Women’s Breast Cancer Network and AIDS bracelet to assist AIDS workers in Africa.

Michael Wexler Michael Wexler, a recent graduate from Dawson College (CEGEP) in Montréal, QC has been selected as a recipient for an RBC Royal Bank Financial Lifeskills Scholarship. The $2,007 award will help him achieve his goal of becoming a ,Medical Doctor. Michael is enrolled at McMaster University, ON in the Bachelor of Arts and Science.

Michael Wexler initiated and organized a blue bracelet fundraising campaign to support the victims of the Dawson College shootings. The program led to the creation of the Anastasia de Sousa Memorial Award Fund. Michael played a leadership role in all facets of the project. He designed the bracelet, secured a supplier in China, negotiated the cost and managed production and delivery. He found sponsors to cover all expenses, from the bracelets to marketing materials. He also acted as spokesperson and coordinated a large group of volunteers to sell the bracelets. The project was supported by schools, colleges, community groups, a comedy review and a benefit concert in Montreal, as well as schools in Ontario. The campaign raised over $ 60,000.

Michael submitted posters, and a blue bracelet that he designed for the fundraising campaign.


French language applicant

Norma Patricia Kimsi Palacios Norma Patricia Kimsi Palacios, a recent graduate from Cégep André-Laurendeau in Lasalle, QC has been selected as a recipient for an RBC Royal Bank Financial Lifeskills Scholarship. The $2,007 award will help her achieve her goal of becoming a nurse. Norma Patricia is enrolled in a Bachelor in Nursing Sciences at l’Université de Montréal, QC.

Norma Patricia came to Quebec from Mexico with a background in graphic arts. With time, and a great deal of perseverance, she learned French and enrolled in courses that would pave the way for her new career in the nursing sciences. To round out her experience, she volunteered at schools, the neighbourhood church, and child-care facilities, including chez Tzoalli, affiliated with the Sainte Justine Hospital. During her schooling, she worked as a care giver at Grace Dart palliative centre and the school library. Hard working and focussed, Norma Patricia is motivated to finish her schooling in order to concentrate fully on helping people. She is close to achieving her dream.

Norma Patricia Kimsi Palacios submitted a group project that was created for her paramedics care and service class addressing health promotion and prevention of sickness. The theme was infectious diseases.


Jérémie Maillet-LeBlanc Jérémie Maillet-LeBlanc, a recent graduate from École l'Odyssée in Moncton, NB has been selected as a recipient for an RBC Royal Bank Financial Lifeskills Scholarship. The $2,007 award will help him achieve his goal of becoming a Civil Engineer. Jérémie is enrolled in a Bachelor of Civil Engineering at l’Université de Moncton, NB.

Jérémie Maillet-LeBlanc is an entrepreneur who’s drive and focus are equal to his strong work ethic. After four years of mowing lawns in his neighbourhood, he decided to create a small business. Services Saisonniers Jérémie Seasonal Services now boasts two employees and a roster of regular clients. Jérémie submitted his business plan to the SEED category of the Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge and, as provincial finalist, won first prize -- $1,000 and a $ 3,000 loan. Jérémie took part in the 2006 Shad Valley Program that assembled 625 youths from across Canada and other countries. He was among fifty youth from 16-18 assembled at l’Université Laval. The principal themes were science, math, entrepreneurship, and leadership.

Jérémie submitted the winning business plan for Services Saisonniers Jérémie Seasonal Services.
