2008 Lifeskills Scholarship Recipients

British Columbia, Yukon and the Territories

Deronn Palmer Deronn "Bo" Palmer, a recent graduate from Windsor Secondary School in North Vancouver, BC has been selected as a recipient for an RBC Royal Bank Financial Lifeskills Scholarship. The $2,008 award will help him achieve his goal of becoming a Broadcast Journalist. Deronn is enrolled in an Applied Sciences program with a major in Communications and Broadcast Journalism at Simon Fraser University, BC.

Athletics play a major role in Deronn Palmer's life. An all-star football player, he has won numerous awards for his prowess on the field and sportsmanship. He has shared his love for sports with countless others through Triple "S," a non-profit organization that he founded. Supporting Students in Sports supplies underprivileged young athletes with donated sports equipment, enabling them to participate. An Honour Roll student, Deronn's accomplishments in athletics and academics are rivalled by his valuable contributions to his community--raising funds for Easter SEALS, the Special Olympics and Covenant House; volunteering with the West Vancouver Police Department's D.A.R.E. Program; and taking a leadership role with the RCMP Youth Advisory Board of BC.

Deronn submitted a DVD featuring two newscasts about his organization, Supporting Students in Sports.


Tania Burr Tania Burr, a recent graduate from Stelly's Secondary School in Saanichton, BC has been selected as a recipient for an RBC Royal Bank Financial Lifeskills Scholarship. The $2,008 award will help her achieve her goal of becoming a Specialty Physician. Tania is enrolled in a Bachelor of Science program with a major in Life Sciences at Queens University, ON.

Tania Burr is the recipient of many academic and citizenship awards. She was the head of her high school council's Spirit Games Committee, a member of the Superintendent's Student Leadership Group and the founder and president of Stelly's Performing Arts Executive. She performs at the senior level with the Veselka Ukrainian Dance Association and played lead trumpet with her school's concert band. An accomplished athlete, Tania is a competitive rower, winning gold, silver and bronze medals and also a lawn bowler.

Tania submitted "Factor Xa: Clot Maker and Clot Breaker," a research project on blood coagulation proteins that she worked on during her participation with the prestigious Heart and Stroke Foundation's High School Summer Research Program, at the University of British Columbia. The results from this project will be used to develop new life-saving therapies for victims of heart attack and stroke.


Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba

Colin Starkevich Colin Starkevich, a recent graduate from Centre High Campus in Edmonton, AB has been selected as a recipient for an RBC Royal Bank Financial Lifeskills Scholarship. The $2,008 award will help him achieve his goal of becoming a Wildlife Biologist. Colin is enrolled in a Wildlife and Fisheries Conservation program at Lakeland College, AB.

Colin Starkevich has a keen passion for wildlife and the outdoors, but also possesses a burgeoning talent as a visual artist. During his first year of high school at Eastglen HS, Colin learned to paint with oils during his lunch hour. After one lesson in this medium, he pursued the art form on his own and within one year achieved national acclaim with his oil portraits of birds. He has donated prints of his golden eagle and ruddy duck portraits to be auctioned to raise funds for Ducks Unlimited Canada. In addition, Colin is a volunteer with the Alberta Society for Injured Birds of Prey, where he demonstrates a knowledge of wildlife species and habits that exceeds many professionals already working in the field of wildlife conservation.

Colin submitted a print of his oil painting of a great horned owl, which was selected as one of the winners in the 2007 Robert Bateman "Get to Know" calendar contest.



Catherine Benesch Catherine Benesch, a recent graduate of the Alberta Distance Learning Centre, has been selected as a recipient for an RBC Royal Bank Financial Lifeskills Scholarship. The $2,008 award will help her achieve her goal of becoming a journalist. Catherine is enrolled in the Bachelor of Journalism (Honours) program at Carleton University in Ottawa, ON.

Catherine Benesch has been a distance-learning student since grade 2. Living in a rural area, she hasn't had the chance to take part in many of the typical activities associated with attending a traditional school. Rather than letting this hold her back, Catherine has made great efforts to initiate opportunities in her community, including writing a regular column, Write Right, for a local newspaper, and helping to plan, prepare and serve dinners to seniors in her community through a program called Wheels to Meals. She also participated as a Youth Intern with the Community Access Program, assisting people of all ages and skill levels with learning to use computers and accessing information online.

Catherine submitted one of her 65 Write Right articles, "Maintain Integrity in Writing," with her Lifeskills Scholarship application. Catherine voluntarily sent in one of these columns to her local newspaper every two weeks for two and a half years, with the goal of encouraging others to become better communicators.


Ontario

David Lawless David Lawless, a recent graduate from West Hill Secondary School in Owen Sound, ON has been selected as a recipient for an RBC Royal Bank Financial Lifeskills Scholarship. The $2,008 award will help him achieve his goal of becoming an Environmental Scientist. David is enrolled in a Bachelor of Science program with a major in Biochemistry at University of Guelph, ON.

David Lawless's achievements combine academic excellence, a passion for music, environmental stewardship, and community service. Committed to environmental causes, David is the co-founder and vice-president of Green Committee, a school group that offers practical solutions to environmental issues. He also won the John Muir Environmental Conserver Award in recognition of his efforts and dedication with Envirothon, an international program where teams of students compete in their understanding of environmental science and issues. As a team leader, David conducts extensive research on his own time, which he shares with his own and other Envirothon teams. David cites his involvement with Envirothon as the cause behind his ambition to pursue a career in environmental sciences and ecology.

David submitted a music-video DVD called The Boreal Beat, aimed at informing youth about the importance of Canada's boreal forest, a project that earned him the National Boreal Individual Achievement Award.


Hannah Brooks Hannah Brooks, a recent graduate from St. Ignatius of Loyola Secondary School in Oakville, ON has been selected as a recipient for an RBC Royal Bank Financial Lifeskills Scholarship. The $2,008 award will help her achieve her goal of becoming a Paediatric Endocrinologist. Hannah is enrolled in a Bachelor of Science, Honours program with a major in Bio-Medical Science at University of Guelph, ON.

When Hannah Brooks was just four years old, she and her family received the devastating news that her three-year-old brother, Andy, had cancer in the form of two malignant unrelated brain tumours. Hannah has been an integral figure of support and strength in her family's fight against Andy's illness. In addition to being one of his key caregivers, she has raised thousands of dollars for paediatric oncology units across Canada and summer oncology camps. She is an ambassador and spokesperson for the Coast to Coast against Cancer Foundation.

Hannah submitted a DVD film that she made about her brother and his battle with cancer. The film was initially made to be shown only at Andy's high school but is now shown across the country at all Inside Ride events, a stationary bike relay race that raises money for the Coast to Coast against Cancer Foundation.


Quebec and the Maritimes

Owen McCausland Owen McCausland, a recent graduate from Saint John High School in Saint John, NB has been selected as a recipient for an RBC Royal Bank Financial Lifeskills Scholarship. The $2,008 award will help him achieve his goal of becoming a Vocal Performer. Owen is enrolled in a Bachelor of Music program with a major in Voice Performance at Dalhousie University, NS.

Owen McCausland has been studying music since the age of five. He started with piano and violin, and later studied bassoon and voice. This training led to Owen's role in the New Brunswick youth orchestra, with whom he performed at Carnegie Hall, New York, Parma, Italy and Beijing, and to his present position as concertmaster of the Saint John High School String Ensemble. Owen is also very active in the theatre, playing lead roles in performances of Cats, The Music Man and The Importance of Being Earnest. A strong scholar, Owen is also an avid hockey and tennis player, and was the president of his student council for 2007-2008. His future plans include composing, conducting and further studies in opera.

Owen submitted the score for and a recording of his own composition, "String Quartet in G Minor."


Emily Warren Emily Warren, a recent graduate from Sydney Academy in Sydney, NS has been selected as a recipient for an RBC Royal Bank Financial Lifeskills Scholarship. The $2,008 award will help her achieve her goal of becoming an Illustrator. Emily is enrolled in a Bachelor of Fine Arts program with a major in Visual Arts at Memorial University, NL.

Emily Warren uses her creativity and leadership skills to help others. Two years ago, Emily became a junior leader in the Cape Breton Coastal Area division of the Girl Guides of Canada, an organization she has been a part of since the age of five. In 2006/07, Emily was chosen as the representative of all the Senior Branch Guides in her Cape Breton division. In this role, she travelled to Halifax three times to provide a voice for her division and to report back to her area's council. In addition to her Guiding commitments, Emily is an academic achiever who has supplemented her regular schoolwork with International Baccalaureate art classes to prepare herself for a career in fine arts.

Emily submitted a children's book that she wrote and illustrated herself. The story is about a creature named "Gren" who longs to play with other children but is afraid of what they might think about him.


French language applicant

Carl Nolet Carl Nolet, a recent graduate from Cégep de l'Abitibi-Témiscamingue, in Val-d'Or, QC has been selected as a recipient for an RBC Royal Bank Financial Lifeskills Scholarship. The $2,008 award will help him achieve his goal of becoming an International Economist. Carl is enrolled in a Bachelor of Business Administration at the école des hautes études commerciales de Montréal, QC.

Carl Nolet selected an International program in high school and set his sights on the global arena. Through hard work and determination he achieved a perfect mark on his programme synthesis project, which earned him two certificates from the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) and from the Society of IB World Schools of Quebec and French Speaking World. Carl is very involved in his community -- from lending a hand in primary schools, and passionately teaching tennis to offering assistance to elderly people. Of the mind that linguistic prowess is an undeniable advantage in the international workplace, Carl took private English lessons for several years, and has worked summers outside of the province. He has also learned Spanish.

After completing his bachelor degree, Carl intends to do several study terms abroad to better grasp the economic impact of globalisation. Carl plans to pursue a masters and a doctorate at Oxford. His greatest hope is to participate in the development of new economic theories that represent the global socio-economic reality. Carl submitted a project on the effects of climate change.


Stephanie Gervais Stéphanie Gervais, a recent graduate from Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf, in Montreal, QC has been selected as a recipient for an RBC Royal Bank Financial Lifeskills Scholarship. The $2,008 award will help her achieve her goal of becoming a Doctor. Stéphanie is enrolled in the Doctorate Program at the Faculty of Medicine at l'Université de Montréal, QC.

Determined to become a doctor, Stéphanie Gervais has volunteered at Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf's First Aid Response Group (Groupe d'intervention en secourisme) and at the Côte-des-Neiges Community Centre's Respite for children in need (Le Répit auprès d'enfants défavorisés). Her experience in these places led to work at the Jewish General Hospital in geriatrics and the Emergency room, as well as a work placement in microbiology at the University of Saskatchewan. Stéphanie directed a fundraising project for Nicaragua, and travelled there, taking part in an international cooperation initiation term. Last summer she volunteered at a work camp for children from a troubled Roma community in the Czech Republic. Stéphanie's professional goal is to work for Doctors Without Borders, or to become a clinical paediatrician or a psychiatrist.

Stéphanie submitted an essay for her International Baccalaureate program on the effectiveness of electroconvulsive therapy in the treatment of depression.
