2009 Lifeskills Scholarship Recipients

British Columbia, Yukon and the Territories

Danial Wali Danial Wali, a recent graduate from L.A. Matheson Secondary School in Surrey, BC has been selected as a recipient for an RBC Royal Bank Financial Lifeskills Scholarship. The $2,009 award will help Danial achieve his goal of becoming an Engineering Professor. Danial is enrolled in the Applied Sciences program with a major in Mechanical Engineering at the University of British Columbia, BC.

His teachers say that Danial Wali is never satisfied with the status quo, and is always searching for ways to improve any situation. Within his community, Danial volunteers at a Somali community centre. He is Khatib, a sermon deliverer, at his mosque and is a youth spokesperson for interfaith dialogue. He spent part of his summer in 2008 as a junior instructor for GEERing Up! UBC Engineering & Science for Kids. In this capacity, he was able to combine two of his passions: building machines and mentoring youngsters. A fan of baseball, Danial plays outfield or second base and also umpires Pee Wee games within the Surrey Canadian Baseball Association.

Danial submitted his plans and explanation for a Lego engine that runs on vacuum cleaner power—an engine that uses inverted pressure to generate motion.


Xin Ru (Nancy) Wang Xin Ru (Nancy) Wang, a recent graduate from Columneetza Secondary School in Williams Lake, BC, has been selected as a recipient for an RBC Royal Bank Financial Lifeskills Scholarship. The $2,009 award will help Xin Ru achieve her goal of becoming a Scientific Researcher. Xin Ru is enrolled in the prestigious Science One program at the University of British Columbia, BC.

In the words of her math teacher, Xin Ru is a student of “extraordinary academic ability.” This, combined with her “can-do” attitude, have earned her the highest grade point average in her school for three consecutive years. Her hard work earned her a placement with the renowned Heart and Stroke Foundation’s High School Summer Research Program, at the University of British Columbia, where she worked with world-class cardiovascular researchers. Despite her academic and extracurricular demands, Xin Ru also volunteers at the Williams Lake Seniors Village, where she visits with patients, takes them for walks, paints their fingernails, and helps the residents with other tasks that allow them to enjoy a better quality of life.

Xin Ru submitted a poster about CD34 proteins that she created from findings gained while working alongside researchers at UBC. Their experiments contribute to the ongoing quest for cures for cancer, arthritis, heart disease, and more.


Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba

Roydon Tse Roydon Tse, a recent graduate from Ross Sheppard High School in Edmonton, AB, has been selected as a recipient for an RBC Royal Bank Financial Lifeskills Scholarship. The $2,009 award will help Roydon achieve his goal of becoming a Composer. Roydon is enrolled in the Bachelor of Music program at the University of British Columbia, BC.

Roydon Tse has lived in Canada for only two years but that hasn’t kept him from pursuing musical endeavors and volunteerism in his new hometown, Edmonton. A student of piano and violin since the age of seven, Roydon’s desire for a future in music composition took hold while he attended boarding school in England. Upon immigrating to Canada in 2007, he applied to the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra’s Young Composers Project and was selected as its Young Composer of the Year. A scholar of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, Roydon also donates his time and talent to be the accompanist for the Taiwan University Alumni Chorus, and at a seniors’ home where he spends time with residents.

Roydon submitted the score for “Remembrances—Prelude for Orchestra,” a piece he composed in response to a commission from the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra for its annual Symphony Under the Sky concert.



Kolby Peterson Kolby Peterson, a recent graduate from Beaverlodge Regional High in Beaverlodge, AB, has been selected as a recipient for an RBC Royal Bank Financial Lifeskills Scholarship. The $2,009 award will help Kolby achieve her goal of becoming a Conservation and Restoration Ecologist. Kolby is enrolled in the Bachelor of Science program with a major in Environmental Sciences at the Augustana campus of the University of Alberta, AB.

Kolby Peterson’s sights are set on the environment, and on the people and places that make up the earth. Already championing environmental causes in her school, Kolby created a comprehensive waste reduction program that recycles the school’s plastic, metal, and paper. All biodegradable matter is composted with the resulting soil going into organic gardens. An excellent student herself, Kolby is helping others who are less fortunate to get an education: In 2008, she travelled to Mexico with the “Absolute Hero” program where she helped to build one of three houses, and in 2010 she plans to travel to Kenya with some classmates to build a school and help teach children there.

Kolby submitted a scrapbook titled My Journey So Far, a collection of clippings, journal entries, and photographs chronicling some of her many achievements in her school, her hometown, and in Mexico.


Ontario

Eric Yam Eric Yam, a recent graduate from Northern Secondary School in Toronto, ON, has been selected as a recipient for an RBC Royal Bank Financial Lifeskills Scholarship. The $2,009 award will help Eric achieve his goal of becoming an Aerospace Engineer. Eric is enrolled in Mechatronics Engineering at the University of Waterloo, ON.

Eric Yam says that the set of Lego he received when he was five sparked in him a desire to “become one of those people who spend their time designing such grand and complex machines.” But Eric is also passionate about social activism and leadership, and one of his initiatives was the Enviro-Tech Lecture series, in which Canadian gree-industry leaders came to his school to talk about renewable energy technologies. The series has inspired another Toronto high school to develop a series of its own.

Eric submitted Asten, his entry to the 2009 NASA Space Settlement Design Competition. The project took Eric nine months to complete and is a combination of all his ideas on engineering, technology, biology, and sociology. Out of 310 submission from 13 countries, Asten was awarded the Grand Prize by a panel of scientists from NASA’s Ames Research Center, the first Canadian entry to win in the contest’s 16-year history.


Hannah Brooks Anne Marie Child, a recent graduate from Westdale Secondary School in Hamilton, ON has been selected as a recipient for an RBC Royal Bank Financial Lifeskills Scholarship. The $2,009 award will help Anne Marie achieve her goal of becoming a Registered Nurse. Anne Marie is enrolled in the Bachelor of Science program at McMaster University, ON.

In addition to receiving early admission to McMaster’s prestigious nursing program, Anne Marie Child will also play for the varsity womens’ water polo team—both rewards for her dedication to academics and athletics throughout her high-school years. An award-winning science fair participant, Anne Maries exhibit, Date Rape Drugs: Can They Be Detected? Won a gold medal at the Bay Area Science and Engineering Fair (BASEF). That win earned her an invitation to IISEF in Indiana where she was awarded the Fourth Place Grand Award in Chemistry. In turn, this honour brought an all-expenses-paid trip to the China Adolescent Science and Technology Innovation Fair held in Macau.

Anne Marie submitted an article she wrote on the effectiveness of commercially available “date rape” drug test kits. The article was submitted to the Canadian Society of Forensic Science and then published in the September 2007 edition of the society’s peer-reviewed journal.


Quebec and the Maritimes

Kyung Hwan (Kevin) Min Kyung Hwan (Kevin) Min, a recent graduate from Charlottetown Rural High School in Charlottetown, PE has been selected as a recipient for an RBC Royal Bank Financial Lifeskills Scholarship. The $2,009 award will help Kyung Hwan achieve his goal of becoming a Cardiologist. Kyung Hwan is enrolled in the Health Science program at McMaster University, ON.

Kyung Hwan Min’s education has taken place in three different countries. From Korea, his family moved to New Zealand, and some time later to Canada. Wherever his studies took place, Kyung Hwan applied himself seriously and has consistently achieved honours standings with his marks. Community responsibility is also important to Kyung Hwan as evidenced by his time spent tutoring students in biology, chemistry, and physics, and by his time working for the Korea Welfare Foundation for the Physically Handicapped. The time he spent volunteering in hospitals has affirmed his desire to beome a doctor. Kyung Hwan’s other achievements include a black belt in Taekwondo and his grade 8 conservatory level in piano.

Kyung Hwan submitted a portion of his research paper, Genetically Modified Organisms.


Rebecca Stewart Rebecca Stewart, a recent graduate from Cégep Vanier College in Montreal, QC, has been selected as a recipient for an RBC Royal Bank Financial Lifeskills Scholarship. The $2,009 award will help Rebecca achieve her goal of becoming a Professor of Music. Rebecca is enrolled in the Baccalaureate of Music program at the University of Ottawa, ON.

Rebecca Stewart has been studying piano since the age of nine, and has consistently achieved excellent scores in the conservatory exams as a result of her talent and hard work. A musician with a penchant for helping others, Rebecca has put her skills to good work in her community: giving private lessons, playing for the residents in seniors’ homes, acting as the music leader for her church, and volunteering her time and performances to raise money for music scholarships for others. While attending Vanier College, Rebecca was put in charge of maintaining all of the school’s pianos, monitoring their tuning and repair.

Rebecca submitted a recording and score for her own composition, “Romance No. 4,” a piece that won her first place in her province in the annual composition competition held by the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers’ Association (CFMTA).


French language applicant

Philippe Belley Philippe Belley, a recent graduate from l’école secondaire catholique Béatrice-Desloges in Orleans, ON has been selected as a recipient for an RBC Royal Bank Financial Lifeskills Scholarship. The $2,009 award will help Philippe achieve his goal of becoming an Exploration Geologist. Philippe is enrolled in the Bachelor of Science program specializing in Geology at the University of Ottawa, ON.

Philippe Belley is more than a geology enthusiast. From prospecting, collecting and exporting local minerals to leading excursions for the Canadian Museum of Nature (CMN), he is a local specialist.

For three years, Philippe worked closely with the Museum’s mineral, rock and gem collections curator. Through this work, Philippe was drawn to explore a highway construction site in his county. He discovered a new mineralogical zone in the region which prompted him to co-write a research paper on the subject called Two noteworthy occurrences exposed during highway construction, Hull Township, Gatineau County, Québec.

Philippe was invited to present his paper at the 36th annual Rochester Mineralogical Symposium, an international specimen mineralogy meeting. After the presentation Philippe answered questions in a way that reflected a deep grasp of the subject. As a result of his outstanding performance, Philippe was awarded the Mandarino Prize, given for the best student presentation in the technical session each year. All past winners have been bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral candidates.

Philippe submitted a copy of his prize-winning essay.


Émilie Girard Beaudoin Émilie Girard Beaudoin, a recent graduate from Cégep Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, QC, has been selected as a recipient for an RBC Royal Bank Financial Lifeskills Scholarship. The $2,009 award will help Émilie achieve her goal of becoming an Elementary Teacher. Émilie is enrolled in the Bachelor of Education program at the University of Sherbrooke, QC.

For as long as she can remember, Émilie has wanted to be an elementary teacher. She has worked toward this goal with an impressive array of paid and volunteer experiences related to the field.

Émilie was recruited to join a team of student tutors at the Centre d’aide en Méthodologie at her Cégep. Upon completion of training, she devoted three hours a week to help her peers improve their study habits.

Émilie was also recruited to be a tutor for her Cégep’s Centre d’aide et d’animation en français. This volunteer position involved an admission exam and a three-week training program. Émilie developed a personalized learning plan for three students with learning disabilities.

Beyond the walls of her Cégep, Émily has dedicated over 200 hours to assisting children with learning disabilities through Mouvement SEM.

Émilie submitted a pedagogical strategy called « relation d’aide appliquée en francais écrit ».
