The following recipients were selected for their outstanding academic achievement, commitment to community and defined personal goals.
Ms. Elaine Deng
Ms. Elaine Deng of Vancouver, BC has been selected the recipient of an RBC Scholarship for New Canadians. She is currently in her foundation year at the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design, and will continue her studies there in 2008. She intends to further her education with graduate studies at the Rhode Island School of Design. Upon successful completion of her Master’s degree, she plans to pursue a career in graphic design.
After immigrating to Canada in 1996, Elaine Deng and her family settled in Vancouver. Despite the challenges her parents faced in trying to establish careers while overcoming a language barrier, Elaine Deng eventually found her footing in her adopted home. She credits her school for teaching her about Canadian culture and her classmates for welcoming her and helping her find her place in the multicultural landscape of Vancouver. Elaine Deng feels blessed to be living in a country as peaceful as Canada. She also appreciates the great diversity and abundance of recreational opportunities offered by the city of Vancouver. Her parents are extremely happy and proud that she was given this scholarship, and Elaine Deng is “beyond ecstatic” about the award and the opportunities it presents for furthering her career.
Mr. Aravind Ganesh
Mr. Aravind Ganesh of Red Deer, Alberta has been selected the recipient of an RBC Scholarship for New Canadians. He is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences at the University of Calgary. His future goals include a career as either a medical doctor in the public health care system or a medical researcher with the university.
Mr. Ganesh immigrated to Canada with his parents in 2004. Although his family faced prejudice from some people in their community, Mr. Ganesh found support from his school and his classmates, whom he credits for embracing him and giving him many opportunities to grow personally, academically and spiritually. He enjoys living in Red Deer, a community that offers the amenities of a large city with a small-town feel. Canada’s freedoms and openness to multiculturalism and immigration have left a strong impression on Mr. Ganesh. He feels “truly honoured to have been selected for this scholarship.” Mr. Ganesh and his proud parents greatly appreciate the recognition that this award brings to the efforts and contributions of new Canadians.
Ms. Kate Greeff
Ms. Kate Greeff of Lethbridge, Alberta has been selected the recipient of an RBC Scholarship for New Canadians. She is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry at the University of Lethbridge. She aspires to a career where she can help and care for others, and is considering work in health or education.
Ms. Greeff came to Canada in 1992 with her parents and sister. The family originally settled in Regina, Saskatchewan, but relocated to Lethbridge in 2000. Ms. Greeff loves living in Lethbridge, a city that combines a strong sense of community with the amenities of a large centre. She greatly appreciates the freedom, safety and abundant opportunities Canada offers. Throughout her schooling she has enjoyed support and acceptance from her classmates, whose interest in her culture helped her learn to embrace her heritage while being proud of her new country. This warm welcome also helped her adjust to the great separation between her immediate family and extended family, with whom she is still close today. Ms. Greeff feels it is a “great honour and privilege” to have received this scholarship, a sentiment her proud and excited parents share.
Ms. Kimberley Koch
Ms. Kimberley Koch of Montréal, Québec has been selected the recipient of an RBC Scholarship for New Canadians. She is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree at McGill University, with an eventual major in Biochemistry. She envisions a career in scientific research, particularly in the medical field.
Ms. Koch came to Canada in 2004 with her parents, brother and grandmother. Ms. Koch feels privileged to live in Canada, where she can venture out freely without concerns for her safety. She also appreciates the many chances she has to work and gain independence. Ms. Koch loves the sights and sounds of Montréal and the many cultural activities the city offers. The transition to life in Canada was not without challenges, including her father’s difficulty attaining permanent residency. During this time Ms. Koch received a warm welcome from her school and classmates, who provided their support and taught her about Canadian culture. Her parents are very proud of her scholarship. Ms. Koch feels “honoured to have won” and greatly appreciates this generous award.
Ms. Mo Zhu
Ms. Mo Zhu of Kingston, Ontario has been selected the recipient of an RBC Scholarship for New Canadians. She is currently studying Commerce at Queen’s University. She is planning to pursue a Master of Business Administration in the future, and envisions a career as a financial analyst or consultant in the banking industry.
Ms. Zhu came to Canada with her parents in 1996 and the family settled in Montréal. Knowing few people and speaking neither English nor French, her parents faced challenges in finding employment. Ms. Zhu and her parents also had difficulty adapting to a new culture without the support of their extended family. Ms. Zhu credits her classmates with helping her integrate into Canadian society. She took full advantage of the opportunities her school offered to learn about the socio-political climate in Canada, as well as its history and geography. She loves studying in Kingston, a city she commends for preserving its architectural and environmental heritage. She admires Canada for proudly embracing its multicultural nature. She was “extremely surprised to have been awarded” this scholarship and is very honoured. When they learned of the award, her parents expressed great pride in her achievement.
Mr. Nischal Ranganath
Mr. Nischal Ranganath of Greater Toronto has been selected the recipient of an RBC Scholarship for New Canadians. He is currently working towards a Bachelor of Health Science degree at McMaster University. He plans to pursue a career in medicine, in either cardiology or biogenetics.
Mr. Ranganath came to Canada in 2001 with his family. Faced with a language barrier and having to adapt to a new culture where he knew few people, Mr. Ranganath found support in his new friends and school environment. He credits them with helping him feel comfortable during his time of transition and providing him with friendship and a warm welcome as he adjusted to life in Canada. He appreciates the many freedoms and opportunities his new country offers and the bright future it promises. Mr. Ranganath’s parents are extremely proud that he has received this scholarship. He feels honoured to have received the award. He extends thanks to his parents, family, and friends who “have always stood by [him] in time of need and joy.”
Ms. Shradha Gaikwad
Ms. Shradha Gaikwad of Mississauga, Ontario has been selected the recipient of an RBC Scholarship for New Canadians. She is currently studying Business Administration at the Schulich School of Business at York University. She is planning to pursue a Master of Business Administration in the future, and envisions a career in accounting, finance or economics. She also intends to spend time volunteering in developing countries.
Ms. Gaikwad came to Canada as a child in 1998 with her parents and brother. Her parents’ foreign credentials were not recognized. As a result, they faced challenges in finding employment. Despite these obstacles, Ms. Gaikwad has found much to love in her new community and country. With encouragement from her teachers, she developed self-confidence and learned about Canadian culture. In the city of Mississauga, she sees many wonderful opportunities for young people to develop themselves through community involvement. In Canada, she has met with warmth, kindness and acceptance, traits she credits to this country’s multicultural society. Her parents are very proud of her scholarship, and advised her to be proud of herself while remaining respectful of others. Ms. Gaikwad is very grateful for this award, stating that: “It really is an honour.”
