2. How long will it take me to complete the application?

The application takes approximately 30 minutes to complete, provided you have assembled the information required in advance. We recommend you print and completely fill out the application checklist before attempting to apply online.

3. May I submit my application in French?

Yes, you may submit your application in either of Canada’s official languages, French or English. However, applications must be completed and submitted using a single language.

4. Is it possible to submit an application by mail or fax?

No. Applications for the RBC Royal Bank Scholarship for Undergraduates may only be submitted online.

5. What are the technical requirements needed to submit an online application?

You don’t need to have any special applications or programs to complete our application. However, there are a few things you should know about your browser and security:

JavaScript
Ensure you have JavaScript enabled on your browsers. Most browsers are set to run JavaScript by default. Please access your browser’s online help function to check whether your browser supports JavaScript or to find out how to configure your browser to run JavaScript.

Optimization
The online application is optimized for the following operating systems and browsers:

Windows OS
Mozilla Firefox 1.0+
Microsoft Internet Explorer V. 5.0+
Mac OS
Mozilla Firefox 1.0+
Microsoft Internet Explorer V. 5.0+
* Safari is not compatible

Cookies
Please ensure your browser is set to accept cookies. Again, most browsers are set to accept cookies by default.

Security
To submit an application, you’ll need to have a 128-bit encryption pack installed in your browser. The 128 bit Secure Socket Layer (SSL) certificate provides strong encryption for Internet transactions and is a worldwide standard for securing online e-commerce and banking transactions. 128 bit Secure Socket Layer (SSL) is standard on all of the above browsers.

Adobe PDF
In order to access the Application Checklist in PDF format, you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader, version 7 or higher.

6. May I submit more than one application?

You may submit up to three applications, one for each category of Business, Science and the Visual Arts. However, each application must contain a distinct and unique innovation, and be appropriate to the category. Identical applications submitted under each of the three categories may result in disqualification. Please note that even if you do submit multiple entries, you can only win in one category.

7. May I enter with a partner or as part of a team?

No. You must submit your application as an individual. You will be automatically disqualified if any part of your submission is plagiarized.

8. Will I be required to submit transcripts or letters of recommendation?

Letters of recommendation are not required. You do not need to submit transcripts when you apply online. However, should you be selected as a finalist, you will need to submit a full academic transcript for the purposes of verifying your grade point average. You will also be required to submit proof of post-secondary enrolment.

9. How do you define the fields of Business, Science or the Visual Arts?

Please use the following examples to gain an understanding of how we define each category:

Business: includes but is not necessarily limited to the fields of finance, commerce, marketing, management studies, business law, economics, etc.

Science: includes but is not limited to fields in science and medicine such as math, chemistry, engineering, information and computer sciences, etc.

Visual Arts: includes but is not limited to graphic design, multi-media and film studies, photography, painting, sculpture, etc.

10. What is an example of an innovation in Business, Science or the Visual Arts fields?

Here are past examples of innovation within the following fields:

Business: The development of a new way of selling products globally, for instance, using the Internet to expand distribution networks. The creation of a new product or service, such as the Post-It note.

Science: The development of new technologies, such as the use of alternative energies. The invention of a new vaccine.

Visual Arts: The creation of a new form of visual communication, such as the use of digital media or computer generated graphics. Or the development of a new artistic movement, such as Surrealism or Post-Modernism.

11. My innovation crosses multiple categories. Which category (Business, Science or the Visual Arts) should I choose?

Should your innovation fall into multiple categories, please select the category which best reflects the desired outcome of your project. Here are some examples to help you understand how to determine an appropriate category:

Idea: New process to curate and sell art on behalf of up and coming new artists.
Category: Business
Rationale: This idea ultimately drives revenue and profit, and is not a new form of visual art.

Idea: New method of visually explaining String Theory
Category: Visual Arts
Rationale: The idea is not an innovation to scientific theory, but rather an innovative way of presenting existing scientific fact.

Idea: New mechanical system to revolutionize the wind-energy industry
Category: Science
Rationale: The big idea here is a revolution within the field of engineering. Although it may have industrial applications, it is still a scientific innovation, and would not be considered a business concept.

12. I already have a project proposal or business case prepared. May I submit this instead of the online application?

No. You must complete the prescribed online application form to submit your entry.

13. I don’t understand one of the essay questions on the application. Where can I go for help?

For examples and details to help you understand how to answer the essay questions, please print and review the application checklist or contact our RBC Royal Bank Scholarship Support Centre.

14. Is there a page or word limit to the essay questions?

Yes, there are word limits you must follow for the essay questions. For details on each question, please print and review the application checklist. Scholastic references will not be included in the word count.

15. What happens if I exceed the word limit on an essay question?

We strongly encourage you to stay within the word limit, as this is the only way to guarantee that your written entries will be received exactly as you intended. Otherwise, you may run the risk of your essay answers being truncated and/or cut off at the word limit.

16. Will grammar and spelling affect how my application is judged?

Yes. Grammatical and spelling mistakes will reflect negatively on your overall application.

17. When is the last date I can submit my application?

All online applications must be completed and submitted before Monday, June 8, 2009, 11:59:59pm ESDT.

18. How will I know if you have received my application?

Upon submitting your application, a confirmation number will be sent to the email address you provide. You can consider receipt of this email as confirmation that your application has been successfully received. To ensure you receive emails, please add rbc@usupport.net to your Safe Senders List.
