As brick and mortar retailers begin to close their doors and the Canadian penny disappears from view, the concept of finance may be more difficult for little ones to grasp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Go To The Store<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Canada Post, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/business\/76-of-canadians-shopped-online-last-year-canada-post-says-1.3070651\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">76% of Canadians shopped online in 2015<\/a> but the occasional trip to the store may prove worthwhile for your kids. Children learn by doing and inviting them to participate in real-life rather than digital transactions can help them understand the relationship between consumers and businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Carry Cash<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Cash is context. Teach young children that every time they leave a light on or run the water it costs money. Allow older kids to participate in setting shared financial goals like saving for a vacation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Give An Allowance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Introducing children to the relationship between work and money by giving a small allowance fosters financial independence and might help deepen their appreciation of a working parent. In addition, experts suggest that it can have lasting effect on the financial choices they make. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/business\/allowance-kids-parents-money-1.3995918\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Robin Taub<\/a>, chartered accountant and best-selling author of \u201cA Parent&#8217;s Guide to Raising Money-Smart Kids<i>&#8220;<\/i> asserts, \u201cKids do need the opportunity to manage money starting at a young age, where they can make little mistakes when the stakes are low and learn from them.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Come up with a list of age-appropriate household tasks, agree upon their cash value, and let your little one get to work. Just remember to give them freedom with their earnings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As more daily transactions go online and mobile, maintaining a connection to physical money can help children learn abstract financial concepts.
