Before you head south of the border, there are a number of things to take care of so you can travel with confidence and a clear mind. This travel checklist can help keep your pre-trip to-dos straight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Your home<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether you\u2019re leaving for a few weeks or a few months, you&#8217;ll want your home prepped so you can enjoy your time away without worry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list default is-style-blue-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Adjust your thermostat between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius. Any lower than that, you may run the risk of freezing pipes if (or when) it gets cold outside.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Turn off your water, and be sure to run your taps until they\u2019re dry.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Unplug small appliances and electrical devices.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Empty the fridge, take out the garbage and run the dishwasher. You don\u2019t want to come back to smelly foods!<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Arm your security system if you\u2019ll be using it while away.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Check your home insurance policy to ensure you\u2019re protected while your home is unoccupied. You may need to satisfy certain conditions to ensure your coverage.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Have a trusted friend, family member, or professional house sitter look in on your home regularly \u2014 from picking up packages from your porch to doing a walk around the inside every once in a while. Your insurance provider may dictate how often this needs to happen.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Your health<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Healthcare is often one of Canadians\u2019 primary concerns when heading to the U.S. for an extended period of time. After all, American healthcare is more complicated and can be extremely expensive if you find yourself sick or injured without sufficient coverage.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use this travel checklist to ensure your health is taken care of while in the U.S.:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list default is-style-blue-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>Know your provincial healthcare limitations<\/strong>. To retain your Canadian provincial healthcare, you must meet certain residency conditions. In Ontario, for example, you can be outside of Canada for up to 212 days (7 months) within a 12-month period and still retain your OHIP coverage. If you live in Quebec, to remain eligible for health insurance, you must not be absent from the province for 183 days or more per calendar year. Be sure to check your province or territory\u2019s legislation for specific rules related to your health coverage.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>Consider travel health insurance<\/strong>. Your provincial health plan offers limited coverage once you leave the country, so it is highly recommended that you purchase supplementary travel health insurance.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>Organize your medications<\/strong>.Pack all your medications and make a list of your prescriptions should you need anything refilled or need emergency care.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>Know where you can get help<\/strong>.\u00a0Find the name and number of a local primary care physician, an urgent care\/walk-in clinic nearby and the hospital closest to your U.S. destination.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Your taxes and immigration situation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s no question you\u2019ll want to follow tax and immigration laws while in the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list default is-style-blue-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Check that the length of your stay conforms to U.S. residency and tax regulations. Don\u2019t forget to bring them with you to the U.S.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Stay up to date on changes in tax laws. Tax laws in both Canada and the U.S. can change, which could affect your tax obligations. Staying informed about any changes can help you remain compliant and potentially take advantage of any new tax savings or credits.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Your vehicle<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Many Canadians hit the road for their U.S. getaways. Your pets<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Travelling with your pets? Just like with other members of your family, you\u2019ll want to ensure their paperwork is in order, too. Here\u2019s what is required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dogs:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list default is-style-blue-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>You&#8217;ll need to complete the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/importation\/dogs\/rabies-free-low-risk-countries.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-57726-f61008eb\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"CDC Dog Import Form\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">CDC Dog Import Form<\/a>\u00a0and have a printed or online receipt to show U.S. customs officials.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Your dog(s) must appear healthy upon arrival.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Dogs must be at least six months old at the time of entry to the U.S.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Dogs must have a microchip that can be detected with a universal scanner to identify them.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cats and other pets:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list default is-style-blue-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>There are no specific animal health requirements for bringing a pet cat into the United States, but the cat must appear healthy upon arrival. (If yours doesn\u2019t, they may be inspected and possibly denied entry.)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>While proof of rabies vaccination isn\u2019t required to enter the United States, some\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aphis.usda.gov\/aphis\/pet-travel\/bring-pet-into-the-united-states\/pet-travel-cats-into-us\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. destinations<\/a>\u00a0may require vaccinations, among other requirements.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>For most other pets, some states and some airlines require you to fill out paperwork. Before you travel, be sure to check state regulations.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Your mail and cell phone<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>By planning ahead, you may save money on your cell phone bill and keep mail from collecting at home.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list default is-style-blue-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Add international roaming to your cell phone or check with your provider for the most cost-effective way to use your phone while away.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Move to paperless billing so you can stay current on your household expenses and avoid potential delays in making your payments.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Forward or put a hold on your mail so it doesn\u2019t pile up while you\u2019re gone.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Cancel or hold subscriptions \u2014 you\u2019ll save money and paper!<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Your banking<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Banking in the U.S. can be straightforward, convenient and affordable \u2014 with the right partner.
