You have a lot on your mind, from shopping and wrapping gifts to attending holiday parties, organizing family events or setting up your home for the festive season. Over the holidays, scammers often take advantage of the hectic pace Canadians experience, finding ways to hack into personal devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taking steps to keep your devices safe can help fend off these holiday grinches and protect your files, photos, social media accounts \u2014 and most importantly \u2014 your money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Here are some simple steps to help keep your devices more secure.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>1. <strong>Beware of unknown numbers<\/strong>. Never click on links from a number or email you don\u2019t recognize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. <strong>Leave attachments unopened<\/strong>. If you receive an email or text with an attachment, don\u2019t open it \u2014 it\u2019s likely not a gift from a secret Santa!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. <strong>Keep your personal details to yourself<\/strong>. If you receive a call from someone you don\u2019t know \u2014 even if they say they\u2019re from a charity or research company \u2014 never provide personal details over the phone. If you\u2019re in the spirit of holiday giving, initiate the gift yourself by calling or visiting a trusted website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4. <strong>Disable Wi-Fi when you\u2019re not using it.<\/strong>&nbsp;This keeps your device from connecting when you don\u2019t intend to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>5. <strong>Install a VPN and always use it when connecting to Wi-Fi.<\/strong>&nbsp;This is the safest way to use public Wi-Fi. You can easily purchase and download a VPN app from the Apple store or the Google Play store and follow the instructions for installation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>6. <strong>Install updates when they become available<\/strong>. Keeping your device\u2019s software up to date is a great way to patch security weaknesses and keep hackers out of your device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>7. <strong>Be thoughtful about your apps<\/strong>.Uninstall apps you don\u2019t use or apps that ask for too much information or access. Remember, nothing in life is free, including that \u201cfree\u201d app \u2014 you\u2019re paying for it with your personal information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>8. <strong>Use a longer passcode to unlock your device<\/strong>.The longer and more complex it is, the harder it is for someone to guess and hack into your device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>9. <strong>Update your network settings<\/strong>. It\u2019s a good idea to periodically erase your network settings to forget about insecure Wi-Fi networks you don\u2019t use anymore<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>10. <strong>Turn off Bluetooth when you\u2019re not using it<\/strong>. In doing so, you\u2019re minimizing your exposure to vulnerabilities, including cyber attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>11. <strong>Factory reset your device before returning it for service<\/strong>. This way, you\u2019re erasing all your personal information before it gets into someone else\u2019s hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep the holidays merry and bright this season by keeping hackers out of the picture.
