And if a big overhaul isn\u2019t in your near future, you could add insulation to your attic space because it\u2019s typically easy to access.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>Opt for Energy Star\u00ae certified air unit&nbsp;<\/strong>if you\u2019re buying a new home or looking to replace your existing air conditioner and furnace.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to keep your home cooler in the summer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Canadian summers are short compared to those in southern climates, but Canadians are no strangers to at-home air conditioners. You can reduce your household GHG emissions caused by air conditioners by aiming for comfort, not chill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some tips for staying comfortable in the heat:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list default is-style-roman-lower-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong><strong><strong>Lower the humidity<\/strong>. <\/strong><\/strong>Take shorter showers, keep lids on pots, and consider a dehumidifier to lower the strain on your air conditioner.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>Find a temperature on your thermostatwhere you\u2019re comfortable but not freezing<\/strong>. That means feeling cool in your regular summer clothes and not having to put on sweats and heavy socks. Some energy technicians recommend the sweet spot is somewhere between 25\u00b0C and 27\u00b0C.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>Fans use less energy than air conditioners<\/strong>, so it\u2019s worth considering using them to help cool your home. It doesn\u2019t matter if you choose ceiling or portable fans \u2014 the cooling effect feels the same.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Make your water usage more energy-efficient<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to NRCan, water heaters account for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrcan.gc.ca\/energy-efficiency\/products\/product-information\/water-heaters\/13735\">17.2 per cent<\/a> of the total energy use in a home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reduce your hot water usage with these moves:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list default is-style-roman-lower-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong><strong><strong>Wash clothes in cold water<\/strong>. <\/strong><\/strong>Unless you\u2019re dealing with an oil-based stain, cold water washes are effective at cleaning clothes, especially with modern washing machines and detergents.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong><strong><strong>Swap baths for showers<\/strong>. <\/strong><\/strong>Try installing low-flow shower heads and faucets to reduce water waste. That&#8217;s not surprising, considering some of them run all the time, like refrigerators and deep freezers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can reduce the amount of energy your appliances consume with these simple tips:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list default is-style-roman-lower-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>Use appliances only when you absolutely need to<\/strong>. Squeeze more into the dishwasher, run laundry on full loads, and open the fridge less often.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>Clean the fridge and dryer to optimize air circulation and help them run more efficiently<\/strong>. In the fridge, toss out old condiment bottles and clean the coils on the outside. These offer the industry\u2019s \u201cbest of the best\u201d in energy savings.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Switch on smart lights<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Lighting accounts for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrcan.gc.ca\/energy-efficiency\/spotlight-energy-efficiency\/2019\/05\/10\/simple-tips-for-brighter-savings\/21955\">3.5 per cent<\/a> of the average household&#8217;s energy use. That may not sound huge, but it adds up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider these suggestions for more energy-efficient lighting:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list default is-style-roman-lower-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t forget to turn off the lights.<\/strong>&nbsp;While a simple task, it can be easy to forget. Tip: Look for \u201cwarm\u201d or \u201csoft white\u201d on the package for a less-blinding, less-stark effect.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong><strong>Choose outdoor motion sensors&nbsp;<\/strong><\/strong>if you often forget to turn off your exterior lights.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Turn off energy-draining power sources<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Nicknamed \u201cvampire power,&#8221; phone chargers, video game consoles, appliances with digital clocks and other small devices that aren&#8217;t in use still use energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some things you can do:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list default is-style-roman-lower-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong><strong><strong>Unplug anything <\/strong><\/strong>not in use<\/strong>, from the coffee maker to the toaster to your phone chargers.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>Plug all home office equipment into a power bar<\/strong>; with just one click, you can shut everything down for the evening.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong><strong>Replace small appliances&nbsp;<\/strong><\/strong>when they break (such as dehumidifiers and even computer monitors) with more efficient versions.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Shrink your energy bills and your home&#8217;s carbon footprint<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if you&#8217;re not planning a home retrofit, renovation, or a new appliance purchase, these are easy and effective ways can help you save energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Start by identifying how energy is wasted in your home, then commit to making manageable changes over the year.
