Luckily, Canada&#8217;s commitment to achieve net-zero emissions&nbsp;by 2050 means&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbcroyalbank.com\/sustainable-finance-solutions\/electric-car-guide\/electric-car-rebates.html\" data-dig-id=\"LP-58053-9f501d5f\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"federal and provincial rebates\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">federal and provincial rebates<\/a>&nbsp;might be available to you to ease the stress of these up-front costs on your wallet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Which electric vehicles are eligible for the federal government rebate program?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Canada&#8217;s&nbsp;Incentives for Zero-Emission Vehicles program, or iZEV, provides government rebates for &#8220;zero-emission vehicles&#8221;. It&#8217;s possible to drive these vehicles without emitting any tailpipe emissions (that is, greenhouse gases or other criteria pollutants) into the atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Officially, there are three types of ZEVs eligible for rebates:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list is-style-roman-lower-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>Battery-electric vehicles (BEVs)<\/strong> are fully electric, and need an external power source to be recharged. This is considered the most-efficient option. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/1312369\/average-ev-range-worldwide-by-type\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-58053-a7db766f\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"average driving range\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">average driving range<\/a> of a BEV is around 350 km.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>Plug-in Hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs)<\/strong> are primarily powered by a battery that can be charged by an external power source, just like BEVs. The difference is they also have an internal combustion engine powered by fossil fuels. The battery can power the PHEV for moderate distances, around 60 km on average. It&#8217;s worth noting that this type of EV can be more expensive up-front, and its complexity may mean more repairs and maintenance.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>Fuel cell electric vehicles&nbsp;(FCEVs)<\/strong>&nbsp;are powered by hydrogen gas, a lower-emission alternative to oil that emits only water vapour and warm air. FCEVs may be an attractive option because, unlike other EVs, they take only around five minutes to charge. However, these tend to be the most expensive EV options.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Note: If the manufacturer&#8217;s suggested retail price (MSRP) of your vehicle is greater than $65,000, you may not receive a federal government rebate on your purchase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How much of an EV rebate can I get?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The amount of the government rebate depends on the type of ZEV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list is-style-blue-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>Long-range EVs<\/strong>, defined as travelling over 50 km solely on the battery, are eligible for up to&nbsp;<strong>$5,000<\/strong>&nbsp;in point-of-sale rebates. That includes fuel cell electric vehicles and battery-electric vehicles.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>Shorter-range EVs<\/strong>, like plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, are eligible for rebates of up to&nbsp;<strong>$2,500<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>Medium and heavy-duty ZEVs<\/strong>&nbsp;(iMHZEV) are vehicles that exceed 8,500 lbs, which include electric trucks, shuttles, minivans and tractors. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tc.canada.ca\/en\/road-transportation\/innovative-technologies\/zero-emission-vehicles\/medium-heavy-duty-zero-emission-vehicles\/imhzev-eligible-vehicles\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-58053-544c9e0a\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"incentives for these models\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">incentives for these models<\/a>&nbsp;range between $10,000 for the smaller vehicles to $200,000 for industrial-sized trucks for businesses.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can search&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tc.canada.ca\/en\/road-transportation\/innovative-technologies\/zero-emission-vehicles\/light-duty-zero-emission-vehicles\/eligible-vehicles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-dig-id=\"LP-58053-3f0a19e9\" data-dig-label=\"Transport Canada's\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">Transport Canada&#8217;s<\/a>&nbsp;list of eligible vehicles to see the specific point-of-purchase incentives available, or complete&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbcroyalbank.com\/sustainable-finance-solutions\/electric-car-guide\/electric-car-cost-calculator\/\" data-dig-id=\"LP-58053-75520bc1\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"RBC\u2019s Electric Car Cost Calculator\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">RBC\u2019s Electric Car Cost Calculator<\/a>&nbsp;to estimate the cost of an EV with rebates in your province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do I receive the federal government\u2019s EV rebate?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The rebate is applied during the sale of the EV \u2014 you&#8217;ll see it subtracted from the total amount on your bill of sale, or the lease agreement. Your dealer will include the purchase taxes and fees before the incentive is applied, but you&#8217;ll get the full incentive amount.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your EV fails to meet all of Canada&#8217;s Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, or if you have already received a government incentive to purchase an EV in the last year, you might not receive the federal government incentive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Are provincial rebates for EV available as well?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes! Some Canadian provinces have their own incentive programs that can save you&nbsp;<em>more<\/em>&nbsp;money on top of the federal rebates already.
