the temperature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tips for driving an EV in cold weather conditions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s well-established that cold weather takes a toll on an EV&#8217;s range, mainly because the battery has to power both the car and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/sudbury\/electric-vehicle-cold-range-1.6738892#:~:text=4910-,Electric%20vehicles%20(EVs)%20can%20lose%20up%20to%2030%20per%20cent,7%20C%20and%20%E2%80%931%20C.\" data-dig-id=\"LP-58069-c51f6be8\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"heat the cabin\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">heat the cabin<\/a>. While internal combustion engines produce extra heat that can be re-directed to keep drivers and passengers warm, EV motors are more efficient, and the motor generates little additional heat to draw from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All the same, a few simple steps can lead to improved EV driving in cold weather:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Make sure your tires are at the correct pressure<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Underinflated tires \u2014 by even a few PSI (Pounds per Square Inch) \u2014 can make make a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sae.org\/news\/2020\/10\/tire-pressure-impact-on-ev-driving-range\" data-dig-id=\"LP-58069-a0a241d7\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"meaningful difference\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">meaningful difference<\/a>&nbsp;in the rolling resistance and efficiency of an EV&#8217;s battery. Keep in mind that the air pressure in a tire can vary quite a bit when the temperature changes, so it&#8217;s a good idea to check the pressure regularly throughout the season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s also worth noting the importance of choosing tires specifically designed for electric vehicles. EVs need tires with thicker sidewalls to support the additional weight and lower rolling resistance, which contributes to their efficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Set your climate control to &#8220;eco&#8221; mode<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>By selecting&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/iwheels.co\/blog\/eco-mode\/\" data-dig-id=\"LP-58069-16048893\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"eco mode\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">eco mode<\/a>&nbsp;in your EV, you can shift the use of energy-intensive systems to improve fuel efficiency. In eco mode, your car uses&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.chargemap.com\/tips-for-boosting-electric-car-range-eco-driving\/\" data-dig-id=\"LP-58069-bb0cf07b\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"less electricity\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">less electricity<\/a>&nbsp;so you don&#8217;t use too much of your battery heating the inside of the car. Some EV models have a &#8216;driver only&#8217; button and others automatically deactivate the vents when they sense there isn&#8217;t a passenger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another trick is to use&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorbiscuit.com\/heated-seats-12-times-less-energy-than-climate-system-in-electric-vehicle\/\" data-dig-id=\"LP-58069-cbf2d95c\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"seat heaters\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">seat heaters<\/a>&nbsp;and your steering wheel heater to keep you warm, as they use less electricity than climate control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pre-heat your EV while it&#8217;s plugged in<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s no fun getting into a cold car in the winter, and by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/energy5.com\/best-practices-for-preheating-an-electric-car-in-cold-weather\" data-dig-id=\"LP-58069-99ec7f45\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"pre-heating\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">pre-heating<\/a>&nbsp;your EV while it&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbcroyalbank.com\/en-ca\/my-money-matters\/goals-aspirations\/buying-a-vehicle\/finding-the-right-car\/how-to-charge-your-electric-car-at-home\/\" data-dig-id=\"LP-58069-874cfbda\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"still plugged in\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">still plugged in<\/a>, you&#8217;re not relying on the battery to do the heavy lifting when it comes to getting the interior temperature just right for your drive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Plan your stops and know where the charging stations are along your route<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>EVs aren&#8217;t the only type of vehicle to be affected by the cold. Extreme temperatures can significantly affect fuel consumption in conventional gasoline cars, just as they can reduce the range of electric vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, because people are used to finding gas stations and easily topping up their tanks, the drop in efficiency is less noticeable in fuel-powered cars. EVs get more than their fair share of attention when the temperature dips because of the need to recharge when the battery gets low. As such, mapping out the charging stations along your route \u2014 especially for a long trip in the middle of winter \u2014 will help give you confidence that your EV&#8217;s battery can handle your drive and your comfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Adapt your driving<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When you want to conserve electricity, the way you drive your EV can go a long way. Accelerating more slowly, avoiding harsh breaking, and watching your speed will all help preserve the battery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tips for driving an EV in hot weather conditions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Running your car&#8217;s A\/C in the summer can be a power drain. By stepping into an already-cool car before you drive means less work for your battery to do later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Limit the weight in the car<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The heavier your car is, the harder it has to work.
