Read on for tips on how to navigate this transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">First, do (almost) nothing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;ll likely have questions if you\u2019ve been named the beneficiary and find yourself with an inheritance or financial compensation. Don\u2019t rush into anything, especially if you\u2019re also experiencing an acute emotional loss. Take the time to grieve without feeling pressured to make important financial decisions. You can tackle these once you\u2019ve had time to reflect on your feelings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is one task, however, that you should consider taking care of sooner rather than later: Speak to a tax or estate professional. This can help you understand the effects of your inheritance on your taxes. Although Canadians don\u2019t pay an inheritance tax, there could be other changes to your tax status. If, for example, you inherit an income property, you\u2019ll become responsible for the taxes on it.
