It&#8217;s ubiquitous, convenient, cheap\u2014and also contributes to one of the most significant global crises of our time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We know that plastic has an impact on the environment, but many people don&#8217;t realize plastic pollution disproportionately hits marginalized groups<sup>1<\/sup>, as the United Nations recently noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read on to learn more about the repercussions of plastic pollution and how organizations like Plastic Bank are helping to address the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/external_clips\/attachments\/5999361\/original\/iStock-465960706.jpg?1698785860\" alt=\"Plastic garbage on the beach. \" style=\"aspect-ratio:3\/2;object-fit:cover\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>The environmental impact of plastic<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To understand the full picture of the implications of plastic on the environment, you need to start with how it&#8217;s produced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plastic mostly comes from fossil fuels like oil and natural gas<sup>2<\/sup>, which contributes to diminishing finite resources<sup>3<\/sup>, while often destroying habitats and biodiversity through the extraction process.<sup>4<\/sup> Plastic is also a major contributor to climate change<sup>5<\/sup> as the extraction process releases carbon dioxide and other harmful greenhouse gases<sup>6<\/sup>. And to make matters even worse, some discarded plastic can end up in incinerators and release more pollutants into the air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After plastic products have outgrown their usefulness, the pollution it causes continues to persist. As landfills overflow, plastics degrade into microplastics and leak toxic substances<sup>7<\/sup> into our soil, water, and air. Our oceans are overburdened with plastic<sup>8<\/sup>, with the material endangering marine life through entanglement<sup>9<\/sup>&nbsp;and ingestion<sup>10<\/sup>&nbsp;and harming marine ecosystems from the buildup of garbage patches<sup>11<\/sup>. The absence of adequate waste management systems results in a massive accumulation of discarded plastic<sup>18<\/sup>, increasing the environmental challenges faced by these communities and further decreasing their quality of life<sup>19<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of these communities depend on natural resources for their survival<sup>20<\/sup>, so the ecological effects of plastic pollution can have devastating impacts on their ability to make a living<sup>21<\/sup>. With many of today&#8217;s consumers adopting a socially conscious mindset, there is an increased interest in buying<sup>24<\/sup>&nbsp;from like-minded companies<sup>25<\/sup>. The Vancouver-based social enterprise builds recycling ecosystems in underdeveloped regions where community members exchange plastic for income and other benefits that enhance their quality of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of October 2023, Plastic Bank&#8217;s Social Recycling Movement has stopped over 100 million kilograms of ocean-bound plastic\u2014about five billion 500ml bottles worth<sup>28<\/sup>. Plus, it&#8217;s boosted the average monthly income by 33% for over 40,000 collection community members<sup>29<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe believe that social impact drives environmental impact,&#8221; Katz says, \u201cand our model at Plastic Bank reflects that.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Samsul Arifin, a member of Plastic Bank&#8217;s collection community in Indonesia, exemplifies this model.
