At the most basic level, heat pumps can be a better option for the environment because they are far more efficient than other heating and cooling options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Powering heat pumps can produce significantly fewer greenhouse gas emissions because they use less energy; when heat pumps are powered by renewable energy sources like hydropower, wind, and solar, they produce no emissions at all.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.efficiencycanada.org\/the-cool-way-to-heat-homes\/#:~:text=This%20report%20from%20the%20Building,could%20collectively%20save%20%2410.4%20billion\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-85605-ee29c14c\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"report \" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">report <\/a>analyzed the environmental and economic benefits if Canadians chose heat pumps over central air conditioning systems to cool their homes. The report found that the use of heat pumps could reduce emissions from home cooling by nearly 20 million tons by 2035 \u2014 and save $10.4 billion in energy bills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interest in heat pumps as a tool to help Canada achieve its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/services\/environment\/weather\/climatechange\/climate-plan\/net-zero-emissions-2050.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-85605-36ee061e\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"goal \" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">goal <\/a>of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbc.com\/community-social-impact\/climate\/learning-centre\/index.html#glossary\" data-dig-id=\"LP-85605-a3a53287\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"net-zero emissions\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">net-zero emissions<\/a> by 2050 has intensified in recent years. The reason is simple. According to government statistics, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/services\/environment\/weather\/climatechange\/climate-plan\/climate-plan-overview\/healthy-environment-healthy-economy\/annex-homes-buildings.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-85605-82960205\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"13 percent\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">13 percent<\/a> of national greenhouse gas emissions come from the energy consumed to heat, cool, and provide hot water to Canada\u2019s 15 million residential and nearly 500,000 commercial buildings.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Heat pumps could help reduce the country&#8217;s annual household emissions by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbc.com\/climate-action-institute\/climate-action-24\/buildings.html\" data-dig-id=\"LP-85605-eca0d5d6\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"24 million tonnes\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">24 million tonnes<\/a> \u2014 the equivalent to removing six million gas-powered vehicles from the road each year, an amount that equals <a href=\"https:\/\/montrealgazette.com\/news\/quebec\/quebec-wants-to-reduce-the-number-of-cars-but-prefers-incentives-says-legault\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-85605-57033d1a\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"nearly all the cars\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">nearly all the cars<\/a> in Quebec.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do heat pumps work?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The emissions reductions and energy savings benefits of heat pumps are a result of their efficiency. To understand why heat pumps are so efficient, it helps to grasp the basics of how they work.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the simplest level, heat pumps heat or cool a space by transferring existing heat from one place to another. They use a combination of compressors, fans, and refrigerants to heat or cool air and distribute it throughout a home.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All heat pumps utilize the same principle to achieve the same objective, but heat pump technologies include:&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list is-style-blue-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>Air-source heat pumps<\/strong> are the most popular heat pump technology. They work by transferring heat from the outside(yes, heat exists outside of your home even when it&#8217;s very cold!) of a home inside to warm it up. In the summer, heat pumps move heat in the opposite direction, cooling a house by transferring hot indoor air to the outdoors. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>Ground-source heat pumps <\/strong>operate in a similar fashion to air-source heat pumps, albeit with the important difference that they extract heat from the ground, rather than the air. Ground-source heat pumps are sometimes called geothermal or ground-coupled heat pumps and require sufficient outdoor space to bury the heat pump and pipes in the ground.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>Water-source heat pumps <\/strong>take advantage of the comparatively stable temperature of water to heat and cool buildings. To heat a building, water-source heat pumps take water from a lake, pond, or well and extract heat from it via a heat exchanger, which is then used to warm a home. Cooling a home happens by removing heat from a building and transferring it to a water source. Only homes located near a lake, pond, well, or other body of water can take advantage of a water-source heat pump.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>Cold climate heat pumps <\/strong>have emerged in recent years to address one of the weaknesses of traditional air-source heat pumps: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/eere\/buildings\/articles\/residential-cold-climate-heat-pump-technology-challenge-fact-sheet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-dig-id=\"LP-85605-24524103\" data-dig-label=\"Poor performance\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">Poor performance<\/a> in cold temperatures. Technology advances have enabled heat pumps to provide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epri.com\/research\/products\/000000003002020864\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-dig-id=\"LP-85605-cf9e20b2\" data-dig-label=\"reliable heating\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">reliable heating<\/a> in extreme cold, including temperatures as low as <a href=\"https:\/\/natural-resources.canada.ca\/energy-efficiency\/homes\/canada-greener-homes-initiative\/oil-heat-pump-affordability-program\/why-use-heat-pump\/24914\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-dig-id=\"LP-85605-f6329874\" data-dig-label=\"-30\u00b0 Celcius\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">-30\u00b0 Celcius<\/a> (-22\u00b0 Fahrenheit).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to choose the right heat pump for your home<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many factors to consider when you\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbcroyalbank.com\/en-ca\/my-money-matters\/goals-aspirations\/buying-a-home\/home-building-and-renovations\/can-a-heat-pump-save-you-money-and-reduce-your-emissions\/\" data-dig-id=\"LP-85605-6057f5cf\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"deciding if a heat pump is right for your home\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">deciding if a heat pump is right for your home<\/a> \u2014 and, if the answer is yes, what size and type to purchase. Unlike a typical home appliance, selecting a heat pump means considering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epri.com\/research\/products\/000000003002023686\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-dig-id=\"LP-85605-cd4f213f\" data-dig-label=\"factors \" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">factors <\/a>such as the climate you live in, the size of your home, whether it\u2019s a replacement heating and cooling system, and the electricity rates in your area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first step towards improving your home\u2019s energy-efficiency is to make sure your home is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energystar.gov\/products\/ask-the-experts\/improved-home-insulation-helps-heat-pump-perform-better\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-85605-6f025235\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"insulated properly\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">insulated properly<\/a>. A well-insulated home prevents the air leakage that makes your house cold in the winter and hot in the summer. Having the right insulation means you can buy a smaller, and cheaper, heat pump.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, it\u2019s important to choose the right size heat pump. A unit that\u2019s too small may need more maintenance and repair because it will strain to meet your heating and cooling needs, while a too-large heat pump will use more energy than necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Heat pump installers rely on industry guidance from a document called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acca.org\/home\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-85605-96a8f14b\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"Manual J\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">Manual J<\/a>, which takes into account the square footage of your home, its layout, the number of windows and occupants, and other factors to properly size the heat pump. In some cases, a home may need more than one heat pump. Heat pump sizes are measured in British Thermal Units (BTUs). Generally, it takes 12,000 BTUs to heat and cool every 46 square meters (500 square feet) of a home.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A heat pump contractor or EnerGuide advisor will be able to help you choose the right size of heat pump. <a href=\"https:\/\/natural-resources.canada.ca\/energy-efficiency\/homes\/find-service-provider\/find-service-organizations-for-existing-homes\/23772\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-dig-id=\"LP-85605-c40bde50\" data-dig-label=\"Find a contractor\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">Find a contractor<\/a> with experience installing heat pumps and to closely examination the warranties covering parts and equipment. Most heat pumps in Canada are covered by a one-year <a href=\"https:\/\/natural-resources.canada.ca\/energy-efficiency\/energy-star-canada\/about\/energy-star-announcements\/publications\/heating-and-cooling-heat-pump\/6817\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-dig-id=\"LP-85605-09485233\" data-dig-label=\"warranty \" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">warranty <\/a>for parts and labour and five years for the compressor, a key component for transferring heat. Air-source heat pumps should have a service life of 15 to 20 years if they receive annual maintenance \u2014 that&#8217;s about the same lifespan as an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbcroyalbank.com\/en-ca\/my-money-matters\/goals-aspirations\/buying-a-home\/home-building-and-renovations\/whens-the-right-time-to-replace-my-home-appliances\/\" data-dig-id=\"LP-85605-898742ad\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"air conditioner and a furnace\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">air conditioner and a furnace<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How much does a heat pump cost?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/climateinstitute.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Heat-Pumps-Pay-Off-Unlocking-lower-cost-heating-and-cooling-in-Canada-Canadian-Climate-Institute.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-85605-c2a40c6c\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"report \" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">report <\/a>by researchers at the Canadian Climate Institute analyzed available residential heating and cooling options in five cities across the country (Vancouver, Edmonton, Toronto, Montreal, and Halifax), and determined that heat pumps offer the lowest lifetime cost for most households. And there are additional financial advantages, including reduced monthly energy bills.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Canadian Climate Institute has an online <a href=\"https:\/\/heatpumpcalculator.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-85605-d7f1b844\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"calculator \" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">calculator <\/a>that allows homeowners to gauge the annual energy costs of heat pumps. Using an average of the five cities, the calculator estimates that a single home (you can also analyze costs for a townhome, apartment, or 20-unit building) built in 1980 would cost $1,600 per year to heat and cool with a standard heat pump with electric backup. By contrast, gas heating with air conditioning would cost just over $2,000 per year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But one of the barriers to greater adoption of heat pumps is their relatively high upfront cost. There is a wide variation in the costs to install a heat pump. Larger systems to heat and cool big homes will naturally cost more than smaller heat pumps, and installations that also require duct work, additional insulation, and other energy efficiency measures can also add to the price tag.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Standard air-source heat pumps cost <a href=\"https:\/\/heatpumpcalculator.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-dig-id=\"LP-85605-c98d62f6\" data-dig-label=\"about $9,000\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">about $9,000<\/a> to install, including electric panel upgrades, an electric resistance coil for backup, and federal and provincial incentives. By comparison, it costs about $11,000 to install a gas furnace, ducted central air conditioner, and the necessary panel upgrade. Ground-source heat pumps tend to be more expensive, ranging between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbcroyalbank.com\/en-ca\/my-money-matters\/goals-aspirations\/buying-a-home\/home-building-and-renovations\/can-a-heat-pump-save-you-money-and-reduce-your-emissions\/\" data-dig-id=\"LP-85605-9cd821c5\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"$15,000 and $30,000-plus\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">$15,000 and $30,000-plus<\/a>. Besides its size, the price of a ground-source heat pump is also influenced by the system of pipes and coils underground that facilitate the transfer of heat. Cold climate heat pumps cost between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/science\/heat-pump-cost-savings-1.6975426#:~:text=Cold-climate%20ducted%20heat%20pumps%20cost%20%2410%2C000%20to%20%2419%2C000,source%2C%20adding%20an%20additional%20cost%20%28see%20next%20section%29.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-dig-id=\"LP-85605-84efe26e\" data-dig-label=\"$10,000 and $19,000\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">$10,000 and $19,000<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rebates and incentives to install a heat pump in Canada<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Rebate programs are available to help homeowners cover the upfront costs of installation.
