gases, and grow fresh produce to eat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/agriculture.canada.ca\/en\/environment\/climate-change\/climate-scenarios-agriculture\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-85860-cfd6bfac\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"climate change\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">climate change<\/a>&nbsp;affects growing seasons and contributes towards more extreme weather events, you might be feeling the challenge of growing a successful garden this year. Reduce your green lawn space<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Growing green grass uses a lot of water, not to mention the work and resources needed for cutting, fertilizing and, occasionally, using pesticides. It\u2019s possible to save time and water by maintaining a smaller lawn space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are simple ways to reduce your grassy area such as adding a path, expanding a garden, covering a section of your lawn with mulch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Plant for pollinators and biodiversity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Providing for pollinators could be part of every gardener\u2019s job description.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrcs.usda.gov\/wps\/portal\/nrcs\/main\/national\/plantsanimals\/pollinate\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-85860-152b9503\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"Three-fourths\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">Three-fourths<\/a>&nbsp;of the world\u2019s flowering plants and about 35 percent of the world\u2019s food crops depend on pollinators. In Canada, the most common pollinators are bees, helped by a variety of species including butterflies, moths, hummingbirds, and bats.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, pollinators are struggling to adapt to the impacts of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/calgary\/bees-climate-change-1.6556475\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-85860-3bb3fd20\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"climate change and habitat loss\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">climate change and habitat loss<\/a>. As the annual growing season becomes increasingly less predictable, pollinators can\u2019t always find the plants they need to survive at the right time, not to mention that fewer natural spaces available for them to thrive.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By planting with pollinators in mind, we can help rebuild their homes in our gardens.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/regrow.wwf.ca\/#plantNativePlantsAndTrees\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-85860-085dce16\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"Native plants\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">Native plants<\/a>&nbsp;are familiar to pollinators and important to the health of a region\u2019s&nbsp;natural habitat. And because native plants have evolved naturally in that region, they provide the best habitat for pollinators and local species, and require less water or fertilizer than non-native species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are a few ideas for getting started:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Remember that you can start small<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s no need to remove every non-native plant and start anew. Start small by adding a few native plants to containers or garden beds, integrating them into your garden. The native plants you select will depend on where you live, so it\u2019s best to consult your local garden centre for guidance on what to grow.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Plant in clusters<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Plant several native species together in one or more clusters. This creates a target for pollinators to easily find what they\u2019re looking for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Plan a continuous bloom of flowers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Select native plants that bloom at different times through the growing season from spring to summer to fall. This continuous bloom helps pollinators keep busy and the ecosystem healthy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4.Grow a variety of plants<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Variety helps create biodiversity in your garden, attracting more insects, birds and other wildlife that make up the natural habitat. When choosing plants, make sure to include vibrant colours to attract pollinators.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Did you know trees contribute to the ecosystem even after they die? Dead wood provides nesting for pollinators and critters.
