Yet women investors tend to outperform their male counterparts.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list is-style-blue-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>With an investment plan, you can build confidence and wealth with small but steady investments that build over time and secure your financial future.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s start with the good news: Women\u2019s economic power is on the rise. Women have more financial decision-making power than ever before, as they now earn more, control more wealth, inherit more and start more businesses. As such, women will control <a href=\"https:\/\/ca.rbcwealthmanagement.com\/web\/dana.george\/women-in-wealth#:~:text=A%20Customized%20Approach%20for%20Women%20in%20Wealth&amp;text=By%202026%2C%20women%20in%20Canada,be%20a%20primary%20income%20earner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nearly 50%<\/a> of all financial wealth in Canada by 2026. These are important and impressive gains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But there is more work to do to close the gender investment gap. As RBC\u2019s Global Asset Management points out, just how many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbcgam.com\/en\/ca\/about-us\/responsible-investment\/women-investing\">unique challenges women face to building wealth<\/a>, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list is-style-blue-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>Pay gap<\/strong>: Men still <a href=\"https:\/\/www150.statcan.gc.ca\/n1\/daily-quotidien\/230921\/dq230921b-eng.htm\">earn more<\/a> than women. Notably, the wage gap is largest between Canadian-born men and immigrant women who landed as adults (21%) and Indigenous women (20%).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>Caregiver gap:<\/strong> Women in Canada <a href=\"https:\/\/www150.statcan.gc.ca\/n1\/pub\/89-652-x\/89-652-x2024002-eng.htm\">provide more unpaid care<\/a> for loved ones than men and they report more negative impacts on their well-being.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>Financing gap:<\/strong> Women business owners are <a href=\"https:\/\/ised-isde.canada.ca\/site\/sme-research-statistics\/en\/research-reports\/financing-profile-women-entrepreneurs-october-2010\/financing-profile-women-entrepreneurs-october-2010\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">less likely to be approved<\/a> for short-term financing than their male counterparts and are also <a href=\"https:\/\/thoughtleadership.rbc.com\/venturing-out-closing-the-funding-gap-for-female-entrepreneurs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">underrepresented in venture funding<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>Investing gap: <\/strong>Women tend to place <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbcroyalbank.com\/en-ca\/my-money-matters\/money-academy\/banking-basics\/money-mindset\/how-does-gender-play-a-role-in-money-attitudes-and-behaviours\/\">more importance on savings<\/a> compared to men. When women do invest, they tend to seek out lower risk (and lower reward) investments.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>Retirement gap: <\/strong>When women are ready to retire, they often have saved <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbcgam.com\/en\/ca\/learn-plan\/investment-basics\/what-every-woman-needs-to-know-about-investing\/detail\">only two-thirds of what men have saved<\/a>. Yet, they must plan for a longer retirement, as women tend to outlive men by an average of four years.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These are sobering reminders that it is important to take steps to set yourself up for a secure financial future, particularly in an uncertain economy. It starts with seizing the opportunity. Currently, only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbcgam.com\/en\/ca\/learn-plan\/investment-basics\/what-every-woman-needs-to-know-about-investing\/detail\">60% of women invest in the stock market<\/a>, meaning four in 10 women are missing out on one of the best ways to build wealth. Yet women investors tend to outperform their male counterparts, as you&#8217;ll see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are five strategies to help build your wealth if you\u2019re new to investing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-make-a-plan\">Make a plan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Embrace being in the driver\u2019s seat. The reality is, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbcgam.com\/en\/ca\/about-us\/responsible-investment\/women-investing\">95% of women<\/a> will be their family\u2019s primary financial decision maker at some point in their lives. This can happen at a variety of life stages\u2014in your 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, or your later years. It may happen by design, or it may happen when you least expect it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take time now to think about your own financial goals. Determine what you&#8217;re investing for\u2014retirement, a home, education, travel\u2014and your timeframe. This will guide your investment strategy and help you stay motivated over time. During an uncertain economic period like the current one, having a solid investing plan will be an anchor against the headwinds.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember that it\u2019s normal for some of your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbcroyalbank.com\/en-ca\/my-money-matters\/goals-aspirations\/\">goals and aspirations<\/a> to change over time, so find opportunities to assess what\u2019s important to you at different stages of your life and make sure that your financial plan is still working for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-build-your-confidence\">Build your confidence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>New investors can benefit from an abundance of resources to boost their financial know-how. First, get a handle on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbcroyalbank.com\/en-ca\/my-money-matters\/money-academy\/investing\/investing-basics\/debt-or-invest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">personal finance essentials<\/a> to set a foundation for your investment plan. In one study, women saw their investment portfolios grow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbcgam.com\/en\/ca\/learn-plan\/investment-basics\/what-every-woman-needs-to-know-about-investing\/detail\">0.81% more on average<\/a> than their male counterparts each year. If that performance continued for 30 years, women would end up with 25% more in their portfolios than men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Start small (and start now)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As an investor, time is your greatest asset. Don\u2019t wait until you have a large sum saved up to invest. Start small and make regular investments. This way, you\u2019re not trying to time the market, and you\u2019ll benefit from the power of compounding to earn even more. These small, regular contributions can make a big difference over time and they\u2019re easy to do with a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbcdirectinvesting.com\/manage\/pre-authorized-contribution-plan.html\">pre-authorized contribution (PAC) plan<\/a>. If you assume a 5% return rate, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbcroyalbank.com\/investments\/automatic-savings.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">saving $50 per month<\/a> can turn into $3,400 in five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Play the long game<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>During times of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbcroyalbank.com\/en-ca\/my-money-matters\/inspired-investor\/ideas-and-motivation\/what-to-do-when-markets-are-volatile\/\">economic volatility<\/a>, it may be tempting to try to time the market or get out of investing altogether\u2014but remember the old adage: It\u2019s time in\u00a0the market that\u2019s more important than timing the market.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research shows women have an advantage in rocky markets: They tend to be patient investors who stick to their plans; they are more likely than men to have a diverse portfolio; and they carefully consider risk factors before making investment decisions. Women in one study were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbcgam.com\/en\/ca\/learn-plan\/investment-basics\/what-every-woman-needs-to-know-about-investing\/detail\">50% less likely than men<\/a> to suffer a loss of 30% or more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Make it a team effort<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your investing journey doesn\u2019t have to be a solo one.
