Typically, a phishing email will explain an urgent situation (\u201cyour Bank Account has been suspended\u201d) with a time limit to act (\u201cyou have 24 hours to verify your account\u201d) and a link to click where you\u2019ll be asked to enter your confidential information (\u201cto fix the problem\u201d). The fraudster then gets access to your passwords, account numbers, client base, or even your computer systems. Remember, legitimate organizations will never ask for information to be sent in this manner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-you-can-do-1\">What you can do:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list is-style-blue-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Never write personal information in an email. This includes account numbers, birthdays, social insurance numbers, and other sensitive data. \u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Don\u2019t open attachments or click on links if you don\u2019t know the source. If you receive an email with a suspicious attachment, simply ignore the email and delete it. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Keep your email address safe. Your email address is personal \u2014 avoid posting it on public forums or entering it on sites you don\u2019t trust. And just because someone at a store asks for it doesn\u2019t mean you have to give it out.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-phone-and-text-message-scams\">Phone and Text Message Scams &nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Have you ever received a call or text message from a number you don\u2019t recognize asking you to do something, like provide your private or financial information? It could be a scam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-you-can-do-2\">What you can do:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list is-style-blue-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Don\u2019t pick up if you don\u2019t recognize the phone number. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Never give away personal information to someone you don\u2019t know. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Beware of grandchild impersonation. This is one of the most prevalent scams around today and tricked older Canadians out of nearly $10 million last year. If anyone calls claiming to be your grandchild \u2014 especially if they\u2019re asking you for money, a credit card, or a gift card to help with an emergency \u2014 don\u2019t fall for it. Hang up and call your family directly.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Don\u2019t click on links sent by numbers you don\u2019t recognize. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Avoid acting out of a sense of urgency or emotion. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>If the number isn\u2019t legitimate, delete the text message from your phone.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-phone-settings\">Phone Settings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Smartphones are smart, but they\u2019re not always secure. When it comes to keeping your smartphone secure, there are two things to consider: protecting the device from loss or theft and protecting the data you\u2019ve stored on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-you-can-do-3\">What you can do:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list is-style-blue-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Turn off Bluetooth when you\u2019re not using it.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Don\u2019t install &#8211; or make sure you uninstall &#8211; nosey apps or any apps you\u2019re no longer using.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Turn on the \u201cFind my Mobile\u201d tool so you can locate missing devices and protect data.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Enable multi-factor authentication for the sites you visit.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-6-fake-websites\">Fake websites<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Scammers set up fake retailer websites that look like real online retail stores in these cases.
