Read on for seven strategies to help you manage your credit, build your credit history and boost your credit score.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Stick to one credit card, if you can &nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Using credit responsibly starts before you ever make a purchase. It\u2019s simplest to start building your credit history with just one credit card, if possible, rather than using several credit cards at once.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taking out just one card makes it easier to monitor and manage your credit while you build up your credit history, without the complexity of multiple cards. If you have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbcroyalbank.com\/credit-cards\/index.html\" data-dig-id=\"LP-87658-c96d42e4\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"credit cards\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">credit cards<\/a> from different financial institutions, you will need to keep track of your spending, balance payments and billing cycles in different banking platforms or apps, which might get confusing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be sure you don\u2019t miss any payments or this could end up hurting your credit score instead. Pay on time, every time &nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Keeping up with your credit card payments is critical to building your credit, since your payment history is the biggest contributor to your credit score.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You should aim to pay off your credit card balance in full each month and avoid carrying a balance. However, if that\u2019s not possible, ensure you\u2019re making at least the minimum payment \u2014 and paying off as much of the balance as you can \u2014 on time. Even a single late payment has the potential to lower your credit score \u2014 and, depending on the terms of your credit card, it may increase your interest rate.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Create a strategy to ensure your card is paid on time. When you get your card, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbcroyalbank.com\/credit-cards\/cardholders\/frequently-asked-questions\/payments.html\" data-dig-id=\"LP-87658-b3bcb482\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"set up automatic payments\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">set up automatic payments<\/a> through online banking, over the phone or on your bank\u2019s mobile app, and use automatic transfers to ensure you have enough money in your chequing account to cover the payment.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Mind your credit utilization&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A maxed-out credit card isn\u2019t just financially stressful; it can also impact your credit score. Your credit utilization ratio \u2014 the percent of your available credit you\u2019re using \u2014 is also a large factor in determining your score.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Equifax, one of the three major credit bureaus, notes that lenders generally prefer a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.equifax.com\/personal\/education\/debt-management\/articles\/-\/learn\/credit-utilization-ratio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-dig-id=\"LP-87658-bf065729\" data-dig-label=\"a ratio under 30%\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">ratio under 30%<\/a>. While it\u2019s ok to exceed this ratio occasionally \u2014 and it\u2019s normal for your credit utilization ratio to fluctuate throughout the billing cycle \u2014 try not to make a habit of it.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can calculate your credit utilization ratio by dividing the balance on your card by the card&#8217;s available credit.
