Your kids are going to spend time online \u2013 it is expected and even essential in this tech era. Just as you take steps to protect them in the physical world, keeping them safe in the digital world takes similar vigilance and care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Protecting your kids online starts with a conversation&nbsp;and this<strong>&nbsp;checklist will help your kids&nbsp;<\/strong>understand online safety and the roles we play in keeping our family safe.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-light-grey-background-color has-background\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbc.com\/cyber-security\/_assets-custom\/pdf\/Checklist_for_Kids_and_Teens_EN.pdf\" data-dig-id=\"LP-88302-6d37e956\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"Click here to print\" class=\"rbc-link-format standalone-pdf\" data-icon-class=\"standalone-pdf\">Click here to print<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Share less<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Encourage your child to ask themselves if the information or photo they want to post is something they would give to a stranger. If the answer is no, don\u2019t post it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list default is-style-blue-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p class=\"is-style-default default\">Personal Information: Talk to your kids about what information is considered private. Information that identifies you such as your full name, address, or phone number, should not be shared with anyone.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Photos: Whether it\u2019s pictures of your home, family members, school, or vacation, sharing less is always better.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Location:&nbsp;Disable geotags or location services in apps<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Email address: Your email address is personal \u2014 avoid posting it on public forums or entering it on sites you don\u2019t trust.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Be Smart with Passwords<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We get it. Remembering new and unique passwords for every online account can be a pain. But so is getting hacked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How to build a strong password:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list default is-style-blue-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p class=\"is-style-default default\">Use a different password for each of your important accounts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Use at least eight characters. The longer the better.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Use combinations of letters (uppercase and lowercase), numbers, and symbols.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Avoid common words like \u201cpassword\u201d or \u201cuser\u201d. Make your passwords memorable so you don\u2019t need to write them down, which would be risky.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Immediately change your password if you think someone else knows it (besides a parent or guardian).&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Reset your passwords regularly.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-default default\">3. Nothing is Free<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list default is-style-blue-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p class=\"is-style-default default\">Keep the WIFI activity confined to your home. Public Wi-Fi is less secure than your private network.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Delete any apps that you do not use.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Skip the online quizzes and free apps.&nbsp;Often you \u2018pay\u2019 through sharing your&nbsp;personal information, online activities, location, contact list, text messages, and more.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-default default\">4: Go Private<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list default is-style-blue-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p class=\"is-style-default default\">Phone Settings: Review your child\u2019s phone privacy settings.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Apps and Account: When signing up for a new account, your kids should not automatically accept the default settings. Assist them with creating new account, and its privacy settings.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Social Media: Encourage your loved ones to go private and share less on their social media accounts. It makes it harder for strangers to connect with them online and view their online activity.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5: Fake Accounts and Scams<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Many scams target children, from online shopping scams, fake contests and scholarships to online quizzes. With promises of deals, prizes and awards, these scams lure kids into clicking links and entering their personal details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list default is-style-blue-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p class=\"is-style-default default\">Fake Accounts: Help them understand that people contacting them may not be who they say they are. Scammers creating a fake identity or account online to trick people into friending them or sharing their personal information.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Fake websites:&nbsp;Scammers set up fake retailer websites that look like real online retail stores in these cases. The thing is, you won\u2019t receive the goods you paid for.&nbsp;Show them how to go directly to a trusted site.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Fake Offers: If it sounds too good to be true it most likely is.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Text Message or Phone Scams: If you don\u2019t recognize the number ignore it.&nbsp;Don\u2019t pick up, click or any links they text you and never give away personal information to someone you don\u2019t know.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Email Scams:&nbsp;Don\u2019t open attachments or click on links if you don\u2019t know the source. If you receive an email with a suspicious attachment, simply ignore the email and delete it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-default default\">6: Security settings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list default is-style-blue-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p class=\"is-style-default default\">Set up parental controls. For example, the SafeSearch Filters feature on Google will help block sites with explicit content.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Set strong passwords and encourage your whole family to change their passwords regularly.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Enable two-factor authentication,&nbsp;think of it as having more than one lock on your door.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Don\u2019t install &#8211; or make sure you uninstall &#8211; those nosey apps or any apps you\u2019re no longer using.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Turn on the \u201cFind my Mobile\u201d tool so you can locate missing devices and protect data.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>7.&nbsp;<\/strong>Open Conversation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Protecting Your Kids Online Starts with a Conversation.&nbsp;The best way to protect your kids is to speak with them openly and regularly about cyber safety. Demonstrating that you trust their actions, while sharing advice for smart and safe online usage, can go hand in hand to create savvy and aware young people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8.&nbsp;\u201cI\u2019m here for you.\u201d&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>No one likes to go through challenges alone and keeping safe online can be tricky. Emphasize to your child that should they encounter anything uncomfortable or upsetting online, that you\u2019re there for support.
