You worked hard, you pulled all-nighters, you gave it your all, and now you\u2019ve finally graduated \u2013 with a degree and a mountain of student debt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019re not alone. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www150.statcan.gc.ca\/t1\/tbl1\/en\/tv.action?pid=3710003601\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-89780-80fcec82\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"Stats Canada\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">Stats Canada<\/a>, roughly half of students are graduating with debt, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www150.statcan.gc.ca\/n1\/pub\/75-006-x\/2020001\/article\/00005-eng.htm\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-89780-2f860235\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"64 per cent still have debt\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">64 per cent still have debt<\/a> after three years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although it might seem daunting, there are many ways to pay down that debt and get your finances pointed in the right direction. Here are some tips and tools to consider:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where to start<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list default is-style-blue-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p class=\"is-style-default default\"><strong>Figure out how much you actually owe<\/strong>: Do you have a government loan? A student line of credit? Credit card debt? Do you owe money to family?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>List all your debts and the amount of interest you\u2019re paying on each<\/strong>: You want to prioritize paying back your loans in order of the highest interest rate to the lowest. You might want to use a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbcroyalbank.com\/personal-loans\/loan-calculators.html\" data-dig-id=\"LP-89780-49ed2e28\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"loan calculator\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">loan calculator<\/a> to play around with different repayment scenarios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list default is-style-blue-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p class=\"is-style-default default\">Remember, the &nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/fall-economic-statement-2022-1.6639440\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-89780-d0269d82\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"Canadian government eliminated interest on Canada Student Loans\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">Canadian government eliminated interest on Canada Student Loans<\/a>&nbsp;and Canada Apprentice Loans in April of 2023. This saves graduates an average of $520 each year.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>Make a budget:<\/strong> A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbcroyalbank.com\/personal-loans\/cash-flow-calculator.html\" data-dig-id=\"LP-89780-5df77449\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"monthly cash flow calculator\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">monthly cash flow calculator<\/a> can help you get a clear picture of your expenses and calculate how much you can comfortably commit to debt repayment each month.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ways to pay off student debt<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list default is-style-blue-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p class=\"is-style-default default\"><strong>Start paying now:<\/strong> With both a government loan and a student line of credit, you\u2019re not required to make payments on the principal while you\u2019re in school. But that doesn\u2019t mean you can\u2019t start anytime. Starting to pay down your loan as soon as possible will go a long way to reducing your overall debt.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>Pay more than the minimum:<\/strong> &nbsp;If possible, try and pay more than just the minimum each month, especially on those high-interest loans.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Once you start receiving a paycheque, you can automatically get money transferred to your debt repayment. Even if it\u2019s a minimal amount, it\u2019s a great first step to get started.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>Find ways to save:<\/strong> A great way to save money is to live with a roommate, or even your parents. Even if it\u2019s only for a year or two, this is an easy way to get your hands on extra cash, which you can put toward debt repayment.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>Look into tax rebates<\/strong>: There are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/revenue-agency\/services\/tax\/individuals\/segments\/students\/common-deductions-credits-students.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-89780-66719a8e\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"tax rebates available to students\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">tax rebates available to students<\/a>.
