There&#8217;s also no way to take back any personal information that you shared with fraudsters once it\u2019s out in the public domain. But there are steps you can take to help protect you from further fraud and prevent others from becoming victims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the reasons fraudsters are so successful in their scams today is that once money or information is shared online, it\u2019s immediately out of your control and difficult to recover. That\u2019s why taking steps to prevent fraud and to protect yourself and your loved ones is so important. If you\u2019ve been a victim of fraud, there are important steps you can take to help mitigate the impact to yourself and protect people within your network \u2013 and beyond \u2013 from getting targeted from the fraudsters that reached out.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list default is-style-blue-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-default default\">Report the scam and scammer to fraud reporting agencies<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default default\">If you\u2019re in Canada, you can report the incident to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre via the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca\/report-signalez-eng.htm\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-89916-c09551b3\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"Fraud Reporting System\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">Fraud Reporting System<\/a>. If the scam occurred in the U.S., you can report it to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/reportfraud.ftc.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-89916-cb2807db\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"online\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">online<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Report the incident to other relevant parties<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on where and how the scam occurred, it\u2019s wise to contact any other organizations involved.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list default is-style-blue-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p class=\"is-style-default default\">If it was a scam initiated through social media, contact the social media platform to let them know of the incident. For example, to report a scammer on Facebook, click the three dots (\u2026) at the top right of any post, select \u2018Find support or report post\u2019.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>If you were contacted by a scammer pretending to be your bank, contact your bank to let them know that the scam exists, so they can raise awareness with their clients.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>If you experienced a scam with a delivery service, email provider or phone carrier, let them know what happened. You can also file a police report, which might help with recovering your identity or lost funds.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Scan your devices<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If you clicked on a link or attachment, there\u2019s a chance the scammer tried to instal malware on your device. It\u2019s a good idea to run an antivirus scan&nbsp;to&nbsp;check.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list default is-style-blue-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p class=\"is-style-default default\">If you have an Android device, you can download antivirus from the Google Play app store and run a scan. If the antivirus finds anything, it may prompt you to quarantine, block or delete the infected files.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>If you\u2019re using a Mac, the Activity Monitor tool will show you everything you\u2019re running. If you find a program you don\u2019t know, it might be malware (to do this, go to Applications &gt; Utilities &gt; Activity Monitor).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Change your passwords<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If you use the same password for multiple accounts, you\u2019ll want to change any relevant passwords immediately. This is a great opportunity to create stronger passwords \u2013 use these&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbcroyalbank.com\/en-ca\/my-money-matters\/money-academy\/cyber-security\/understanding-cyber-security\/why-strong-passwords-matter-and-how-to-create-them\/\" data-dig-id=\"LP-89916-3ccf6bde\" data-dig-label=\"10 easy tips\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">10 easy tips<\/a>&nbsp;to boost your password game.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lock down your credit<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If you shared personal information with the scammer, one of the bigger risks is they could use that data for identity theft purposes. It\u2019s therefore recommended to place a fraud alert on your credit report. This will alert creditors and other credit bureaus that you may be a victim of identity theft or fraud. These alerts can help keep someone else from opening an account using your information.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lock your credit card<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;If you inadvertently provided a scammer with your credit card or debit card information, you can immediately&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?client=safari&amp;rls=en&amp;q=rbc+lock+card&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;oe=UTF-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-dig-id=\"LP-89916-2b37076d\" data-dig-label=\"lock your card\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">lock your card<\/a>&nbsp;and then call the bank to cancel it.
