impact on the country&#8217;s overall greenhouse gas emissions: In 2021, residential buildings were responsible for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cer-rec.gc.ca\/en\/data-analysis\/canada-energy-future\/2023\/results\/#a2\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-90042-50c5cfdd\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"6 percent\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">6 percent<\/a>&nbsp;of Canada&#8217;s emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the country works towards its net-zero emissions targets, research from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbc.com\/climate-action-institute\/\" data-dig-id=\"LP-90042-ae5be1af\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"RBC\u2019s Climate Action Institute\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">RBC\u2019s Climate Action Institute<\/a>&nbsp;shows that, in addition to adapting how we build and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thoughtleadership.rbc.com\/canadas-energy-transformation-an-outlook-of-supply-and-demand-in-the-2030s\/\" data-dig-id=\"LP-90042-69f36047\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"power our homes\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">power our homes<\/a>, an estimated&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thoughtleadership.rbc.com\/high-rise-low-carbon-canadas-40-billion-net-zero-building-challenge\/\" data-dig-id=\"LP-90042-36b9eea5\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"16 million homes\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">16 million homes<\/a>&nbsp;will need to be retrofitted to be more energy-efficient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Energy-efficient home projects, like improving insulation or switching to a heat pump, can contribute towards fewer greenhouse gas emissions. In fact, households who participated in the federal government\u2019s now-shuttered Canada Greener Homes Grant program reduced their annual emissions by an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/natural-resources.canada.ca\/energy-efficiency\/home-energy-efficiency\/canada-greener-homes-initiative\/greener-homes-initiative-progress-update-july-2024\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-90042-ccd2e015\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"average of 1.18 tonnes\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">average of 1.18 tonnes<\/a>, and saved $386 in yearly energy costs. In total, the program helped to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 306,530 metric tonnes, which is comparable to removing 94,040 cars from the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are energy-efficient projects homeowners could consider?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Enhancing your home\u2019s energy-efficiency may start with improving the air tightness of its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbcroyalbank.com\/en-ca\/my-money-matters\/goals-aspirations\/buying-a-home\/home-building-and-renovations\/a-guide-to-improving-your-home-insulation-the-basics-of-building-envelopes-2\/\" data-dig-id=\"LP-90042-8aa45e1b\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"building envelope\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">building envelope<\/a>: That is, improving roof or wall insulation, as well as adding double- or triple-pane windows and&nbsp;doors&nbsp;with weather stripping. A well-insulated home can help to improve comfort at home, due to better humidity control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With these types of retrofits it\u2019s possible to \u201cimmediately feel an increase in the comfort of your home,\u201d say Myha Truong-Regan, Head of Climate Research at RBC\u2019s&nbsp;Climate Action Institute. \u201cThe house doesn\u2019t feel drafty, the air temperature is more consistent throughout the house and there\u2019s the added financial benefit of lower energy bills.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbcroyalbank.com\/en-ca\/my-money-matters\/goals-aspirations\/buying-a-home\/home-building-and-renovations\/the-2024-guide-to-choosing-the-right-heat-pump\/\" data-dig-id=\"LP-90042-8a186170\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"Heat pumps\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">Heat pumps<\/a>&nbsp;can also heat and cool your home with incredible efficiency \u2014 some studies show they can be&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/climateinstitute.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Heat-Pumps-Pay-Off-Unlocking-lower-cost-heating-and-cooling-in-Canada-Canadian-Climate-Institute.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-90042-841a596b\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"2-5x more efficient\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">2-5x more efficient<\/a>&nbsp;than a gas furnace. Because furnaces are costly, Truong-Regan suggests waiting until a furnace reaches the end of its life before replacing it with a heat pump: \u201cOne of the biggest opportunities for reducing emissions is really around electrifying your home and moving away from fossil fuels.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Retrofitting our homes is a great opportunity for all of us to make some really smart decisions that benefit our wallets, the planet, and future generations,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How much does an energy-efficient retrofit cost?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While many homeowners may be on board with the idea of a more energy-efficient living space, the cost of upgrades \u2014 which can average between&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/climateinstitute.ca\/retrofit-benefits\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-90042-03014257\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"$6,000 to $7,000\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">$6,000 to $7,000<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 could be a major hurdle. While&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbcroyalbank.com\/en-ca\/my-money-matters\/goals-aspirations\/buying-a-home\/home-building-and-renovations\/make-your-home-more-energy-efficient\/\" data-dig-id=\"LP-90042-9085cd19\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"free or low-cost options\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">free or low-cost options<\/a>&nbsp;are available, larger projects such as heat pump installation, improved insulation, and new windows come with a bigger ticket price. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Truong-Regan understands the challenge this poses for many Canadians: \u201cWhat we\u2019ve heard from homeowners is that they have these great intentions to make their homes really energy-efficient, and they care about the climate part as well, but it\u2019s a lot of work.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But beyond upfront costs, payoffs like lower energy bills can help homeowners weigh up the benefits of longer-term returns. Studies show that Canadians who retrofit their homes save substantially on their energy bills: Participants of the Greener Homes Grant program&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/department-justice\/news\/2024\/07\/government-of-canadas-new-green-buildings-strategy-a-plan-to-help-canadians-save-money-on-their-energy-bills.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-90042-b545ba22\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"saved&nbsp;\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">saved<\/a> nearly $400 on their power bills annually, while the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/climateinstitute.ca\/retrofit-benefits\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-90042-fae4e520\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"Canadian Climate Institute\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">Canadian Climate Institute<\/a>&nbsp;found home retrofits saved the average household $750 each year in energy costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHow much are the potential cost savings? It really depends on your lifestyle,\u201d says Truong-Regan, as energy savings will depend on factors such as the size of a home and how many people live in it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How is the Canadian federal government helping homeowners?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To offset potentially prohibitive costs, the Canadian government offers&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbcroyalbank.com\/sustainable-finance-solutions\/home-energy-rebates.html\" data-dig-id=\"LP-90042-a6290e49\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"several different funding programs\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">several different funding programs<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese programs are needed,\u201d Truong-Regan says. \u201cIf you look at the emissions reduction outcomes of these programs, it is spot on of where climate action needs to go.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And while funding for the most popular federal initiative, the Canada Greener Homes Grant, has been exhausted, the good news is that other federal government programs are available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Oil to Heat Pump Affordability Program&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re at or below your province\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/natural-resources.canada.ca\/energy-efficiency\/homes\/canada-greener-homes-initiative\/oil-heat-pump-affordability-program\/median-income-threshold-table-oil-heat-pump-affordability-program\/24913\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-90042-a1a189e9\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"median household income\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">median household income<\/a>&nbsp;and use oil to heat your home, you could be eligible to receive up to $10,000 to purchase and install a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/natural-resources.canada.ca\/energy-efficiency\/homes\/canada-greener-homes-initiative\/oil-heat-pump-affordability-program\/24775\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-90042-bb8a3a66\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"heat pump\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">heat pump<\/a>. If you live in British Columbia, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia or Prince Edward Island, you could add an extra $5,000 in funding from the province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On average, participants of the Oil to Heat Pump Affordability program saved\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/natural-resources.canada.ca\/energy-efficiency\/home-energy-efficiency\/canada-greener-homes-initiative\/oil-heat-pump-affordability-ohpa-program-glance\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-90042-f52718c5\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"$1,337 on energy costs\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">$1,337 on energy costs<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Canada Greener Homes Loan&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Canada Greener Homes Loan provides you with an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/natural-resources.canada.ca\/energy-efficiency\/homes\/canada-greener-homes-initiative\/canada-greener-homes-loan\/24286\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-90042-c77ee1ea\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"interest-free loan\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">interest-free loan<\/a>&nbsp;of between $5,000 to $40,000, with a 10-year repayment term, for home energy retrofits that have been recommended by an energy advisor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Since funding for The Canada Greener Homes Grant ran out in February 2024, the government has suspended new applications. But, the program&#8217;s replacement, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/indigenous-services-canada\/news\/2024\/07\/government-of-canadas-new-canada-green-buildings-strategy-to-help-canadians-save-money-on-their-energy-bills.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-90042-b5e34cec\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program<\/a>, is forthcoming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The $800-million program is designed to help low- to median-income Canadians (both homeowners and renters) upgrade their homes. The federal government is in conversation with provincial and territorial governments to discuss the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/natural-resources.canada.ca\/energy-efficiency\/homes\/canada-greener-homes-initiative\/24831\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-90042-ec485007\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"launch of the program\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">launch of the program<\/a>, which is expected in 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program aims to provide households with more comprehensive retrofit installation support, at no charge. Through this model, any home retrofits will be managed and provided by third parties, which the government expects will deliver up to four times more value than the previous grant program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Are provincial rebates and incentives available?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on where you live, you might have access to additional funding at a provincial or municipal level.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbcroyalbank.com\/sustainable-finance-solutions\/home-energy-rebates.html\" data-dig-id=\"LP-90042-2c225b49\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"Learn more about regional programs near you\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">Learn more about regional programs near you<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to apply for government programs supporting energy retrofits<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can apply for Canada&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/natural-resources.canada.ca\/energy-efficiency\/homes\/canada-greener-homes-initiative\/oil-heat-pump-affordability-program\/24775\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-90042-9ed96238\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"Oil to Heat Pump Affordability Program\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">Oil to Heat Pump Affordability Program<\/a>&nbsp;through the government\u2019s portal.
