Well, says Dave Mitchell, founder of The Leadership Difference Inc., culture is important because every organization has one. The real question is whether that culture is intentional or accidental.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On episode 95 of the Mind Your Farm Business podcast, host Shaun Haney sat down with Mitchell to discuss his concept of peak performance culture and how it can positively impact the bottom line in both family-run farms and large agribusinesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is culture, and why does it matter to agriculture?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCulture is one of those buzzwords people love to throw around,\u201d says Mitchell, but \u201cwhen you sit down with executives\u2026they often really struggle\u201d to define it.&nbsp; That\u2019s because, as Mitchell explains, culture is more than just a business&#8217;s brand or tagline. It emerges from the \u201ccollective behaviours of everyone who works for you\u201d in every aspect of your business.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A former college baseball player who grew up in a small agricultural town in the Midwest, Mitchell acknowledges that, at first glance, culture may not seem relevant to farming. Though \u201ceven with a small family-owned farm,\u201d states Mitchell, \u201cyou have attitudes, approaches, relationships with suppliers and vendors\u2026as well as the people you sell your products to.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sum of these interactions impacts your reputation in the community, how you attract employees or, as host Shaun Haney suggests, a supplier\u2019s willingness to show up late Saturday night when you run out of fuel and really need it to get through the harvest the next morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If you don\u2019t define your culture, someone else will<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The thing with culture, Mitchell explains emphatically, is that if you don\u2019t define it, someone else will do it for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you are not intentional about who you want to be, some other descriptor will take that place,\u201d he says, using the hypothetical and humorous example of the \u2018Harris family\u2019 known amongst peers as a difficult bunch to deal with. \u201cWell, there\u2019s your ideology in the marketplace,\u201d laughs Mitchell, \u201cthat you&#8217;re a pain in the butt.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He went on to explain\u2014asking viewers to imagine a college football team\u2014that the challenge in taking control of your culture is unifying so many different players, roles, and responsibilities around a single idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Establishing Peak Performance Culture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Drawing on three decades of experience shaping high-performing cultures across the globe, Mitchell created what he calls the five metrics of organizational excellence (described in detail in the podcast):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Where business owners often find themselves focused on the backend operations of the business, Wigger believes it is important to identify with the customer experience. \u201cIn customer service, we often find ourselves too product oriented,\u201d he says. \u201cBeyond specs and pricing, we also have to remember the customer\u2019s time matters.\u201d Accommodating busy lives while really listening to the customer\u2019s priorities is FullMoon Autoworks\u2019 recipe for success and repeat business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list default is-style-default\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<ol class=\"wp-block-rbc-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Horizontal alignment<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Vertical alignment<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Customer experience<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Employee experience<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>People preventative maintenance<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Acknowledging the metrics sound a bit complex, in practice, Mitchell describes them as a \u201cdashboard\u201d for establishing and measuring peak performance culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They help farm businesses define their relevance to their marketplace and strategically consider how to integrate that into every aspect of their business to ensure the continuity of customer and employee experiences.
