section-inner w-half w-mob-full\" style=\"border-radius:0x\">\n<p>A 15-year veteran of the Winnipeg Police, Shawn Black and his partner always wanted to do something on the side that was more positive. \u201cBecause if you\u2019ve ever called 911, it wasn\u2019t because something was going well,\u201d says Black. Having talked about different types of businesses, they ultimately landed on coffee. \u201cEven just the smell of coffee in the car was enough to brighten our spirits.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They started with hobby roasting, but ultimately landed on cold brew when the independent roasting scene got too crowded. Cold brew was new, different and a fringe product at the time \u2014 something that appealed to Black. When his partner decided to step away, Black remained committed to cold brew and has been growing the business,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sheepdogbrewco.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-90934-3d923191\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"Sheep Dog Brew\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">Sheep Dog Brew<\/a>,&nbsp;ever since.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-rbc-rbc-block drop-shadow pos-rel top-line-blue block-wpr  mar-b-hlf\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-rbc-rbc-block-inner-block block-inner\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tldr\">TLDR<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list is-style-blue-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>A distinct brand rooted in authenticity and character can create next-level engagement with customers and prospects.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list is-style-blue-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Staying true to your vision \u2014 without compromise \u2014 enables you to stand out and offer a differentiated experience. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list is-style-blue-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Growing thoughtfully, instead of rapidly, allows you to get your systems running smoothly so you can comfortably accommodate future growth.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Building more than a business \u2013 creating an authentic brand<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>From the outset, Black wanted to create a strong and distinct brand. \u201cI wanted to create a brand where it felt like a beer company, but it was coffee,\u201d he explains. Black shares that the inspiration for Sheepdog\u2019s brand was &#8216;like Tom Selleck driving an \u201986 Ferrari \u2014 cool, masculine and retro.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But for Black, branding wasn\u2019t just about the image. Looking to establish a brand that reflected both his roots and had a distinct personality, Black was intentional about the brand\u2019s character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An army veteran and a current police officer with 15 years on the job, Black explains that the \u201cSheepdog\u201d name is a tribute to his first responder, military background. \u201cThe Sheepdog lives amongst the sheep and protects them from the wolf,\u201d he says. As a further nod to his roots, the actors in the recent Sheepdog commercial are all either cops or soldiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The branding permeates every aspect of their business, from their website, their merchandise, their packaging to their delivery vehicle \u2014 their Ford Bronco with a cool vintage wrap is instantly recognizable on the streets. Sheepdog also dominates Instagram in the city of Winnipeg, with 10,000 followers and 7,000 \u2014 8,000 views on everything they post, leading them to have one of the most engaging brands in Manitoba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A unique product and a distinct experience<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sheepdog offers three flagship coffee beverages, each with a different roast profile \u2014 from light to medium to dark. \u201cWe have a can for each type of coffee drinker,\u201d says Black. With a facility dedicated to just making cold brew, they control everything from their brew time to their ingredients. \u201cWe roast in-house and brew within 72 hours of roasting \u2014 so it\u2019s a fresh, premium coffee bean. We then do a true 20-hour brew time, so you get twice as much caffeine, but with none of the other stuff. It\u2019s less acidic and easier on the body.\u201d What\u2019s more, they don\u2019t add any flavours or mix sugars or dairy into their drinks, which makes their brews as natural as possible \u2014 gluten-free, dairy-free, organic and smooth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nitro-infused, the cold brew pours like a Guinness beer<strong>,&nbsp;<\/strong>and at their storefront location, they pour it on a draft system. Black explains that they offer more than a drink; they offer&nbsp;an experience that is distinctly in the cold brew space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A thoughtful approach to business growth<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After launching in July of 2023, Black opened a 3,000-square-foot facility, which he figured would be good enough for five years. \u201cI\u2019m already doing another capital raise because we\u2019re outgrowing it,\u201d he says. Sheepdog has reached roughly 200 retail locations in Manitoba and sell their concentrated coffee product to local bars and restaurants. \u201cThe espresso martini is viral drink right now, but it\u2019s a hassle to make for bartenders as they are stuck making espresso shots when they should be mixing cocktails,\u201d says Black. \u201cSo, we sell this bottled product, which has also been picked up by Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, who uses it in their bars and restaurants.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Black also explains that the sober movement is driving volume, as more and more Canadians are drinking coffee or a mocktail instead of alcohol. \u201cAs more people are making a sober living choice, they want more non-alcoholic options.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Black\u2019s plan is to be a national business in the next five years but intends to grow cautiously. \u201cWe need the right systems in place so that we\u2019re as efficient and strong as possible. Growth is great, but you can ruin relationships really fast if you\u2019re not careful. In a town like Winnipeg, entrepreneurs specifically understand that we are heavily invested in relationships \u2014 you can\u2019t just do something badly and disappear. Word travels insanely fast.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group mar-b-hlf has-black-color has-light-grey-background-color has-text-color has-background is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3 Tips for Creating a Distinct, Authentic Brand from Sheepdog Brew Co.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. <strong>Don\u2019t compromise on your product<\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t do espresso; we don\u2019t do lattes. We\u2019re a cold brew coffee business \u2014 we\u2019re very clear and intentional about that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. <strong>Dominate the platforms you\u2019re in<\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are just shy of 10,000 on social media and get 7,000-8,000 views on everything we post. Instagram is our core platform \u2014 we\u2019re also on TikTok and have created an anchor video to drive engagement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. <strong>Be true to your roots<\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Sheepdog name comes from the idea that in the police and in the military, the Sheepdog lives amongst the sheep and protects them from the wolf. That\u2019s our tribute to my first responder, military background.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Leveraging the growth of the category<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While cold brew is a relatively new category in the coffee world, Sheepdog is capitalizing on the growth sparked by big coffee chains. \u201cTim Horton\u2019s, McDonald\u2019s, Starbucks and all the big players have been blasting out ad campaigns for cold brew,\u201d explains Black, who says that cold brews have outpaced hot coffee for consumption in about 25 states. \u201cIt\u2019s one of the fastest growing beverage categories.\u201d&nbsp; Sheepdog, meanwhile, catches the trickle-down effect of their efforts and don\u2019t need to spend their money or efforts educating customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like many entrepreneurs today, Black isn\u2019t planning on quitting his day job just yet.
