In Canada,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fortunly.com\/ca\/statistics\/credit-card-fraud-statistics-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-91036-bfedd256\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"nearly a quarter\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">nearly a quarter<\/a>\u00a0(24%) of cardholders have experienced credit card fraud, and that number jumps to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/personal-finance\/credit-cards\/advice\/credit-card-scams-can-ruin-the-holiday-season-heres-how-to-avoid-them\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-91036-b9d58179\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"60% in the U.S\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">60% in the U.S<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-avoid-being-a-victim-of-credit-card-fraud\">How to avoid being a victim of credit card Fraud<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list is-style-blue-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Never give out your credit card information in response to an unsolicited call, text or email.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>If you\u2019re interested in giving to a charity, do your own research to find a legitimate organization that matches your charitable values and goals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>If you\u2019re tracking a delivery, use the company\u2019s official website using the tracking number provided.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Never leave your card unattended or write down your credit card number or your pin on an unsecured form. If you\u2019re paying at a restaurant, ask to use the credit card terminal so the card doesn\u2019t leave your sight.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>If you need to provide your credit card information in a public space, be sure there is no one around to record the card number or your pin.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to spot fraudulent transactions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The best way to spot a fraudulent credit card transaction is to regularly monitor your account. For instance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list is-style-blue-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Scan your transactions regularly through online or mobile banking. Signing in to digital banking on a regular basis is the best way to stay on top of your credit card charges and makes it easy to recognize a transaction you didn\u2019t make. This way, you can also dispute charges shortly after they occur, which can make it easier to resolve them.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Set up fraud alerts: If you have an RBC credit card, you can set up fraud alerts, where you\u2019ll automatically receive an SMS text message from 722373 any time a credit card transaction looks out of the ordinary for you. You\u2019ll be able to immediately confirm if you\u2019ve made the transaction or not by responding directly to the message. It\u2019s easy to set up or update your Alert settings through RBC Online Banking<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbcroyalbank.com\/ways-to-bank\/banking-services\/alerts.html\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0and the RBC Mobile<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbcroyalbank.com\/ways-to-bank\/banking-services\/alerts.html\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0app.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Review your statement each month, whether you receive it electronically or in the mail, and look through all your transactions. You may not notice something is off if you look only at the balance.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The best way to spot a fraudulent credit card transaction is to regularly monitor your account. For instance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-light-grey-background-color has-background is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other reasons you might not recognize a transaction<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfamiliar credit card transactions aren\u2019t always the result of fraud. Here are other instances where you might not recognize a transaction:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list is-style-blue-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>Unfamiliar merchant name<\/strong>: Sometimes the name a merchant uses for its storefront is different from its registered business name.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>Unfamiliar amount<\/strong>:\u00a0When a transaction settles, there may be a difference between the amount you were initially charged (the Authorized Transaction) and the final amount you actually paid (the Posted Transaction).\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>Unfamiliar date<\/strong>:\u00a0A delay may occur between the time a transaction is settled and removed from Authorized Transactions, and when it appears in Posted Transactions.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>Multiple cardholders or users<\/strong>:\u00a0If you\u2019re the primary cardholder or a co-applicant, your transaction list will include your purchases, as well as any purchases made by authorized users and other cardholders.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>Expired trials or free memberships<\/strong>:\u00a0Sometimes free trials automatically transition into paid subscriptions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Taking action on a charge you didn\u2019t make<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you notice a transaction you know you didn\u2019t make, here\u2019s what to do next:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lock your card<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;If you\u2019re an RBC cardholder, you can easily lock and unlock your card via the RBC Mobile app or RBC Online Banking.&nbsp;It can be temporarily locked and unlocked at any time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dispute the fraudulent transaction<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 If you use RBC Online Banking or the RBC Mobile app, it\u2019s easy to dispute a transaction through either of these digital platforms. On your credit card transaction page, choose the transaction in question and select \u201cI disagree with this charge.\u201d RBC will review the request and get back to you with an update on your claim within three to five business days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other ways you\u2019re protected<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>RBC fraud protection<\/strong>: If you\u2019re concerned about a fraudulent transaction, you can call&nbsp;1-800-769-2512&nbsp;and RBC will be happy to help you. Provided you\u2019ve taken reasonable precautions to protect your PIN and your card, you\u2019re covered for any fraudulent charges both online and in-store.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>RBC Digital Banking Security Guarantee<\/strong>: You\u2019re fully protected against any eligible digital transactions you didn\u2019t make or approve so long as you fulfill your responsibilities<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbcroyalbank.com\/ways-to-bank\/digital-banking-guarantee.html\" data-dig-id=\"LP-91036-2c20d8fd\" data-dig-label=\"1\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">1<\/a><\/sup>.
