But as she says in a recent interview with RBC, \u201cI just didn\u2019t fit their mold.\u201d The variety was interesting, but the hours put a strain on her family \u2013 and she needed to make a decision that was best for her. So, she stepped away. After testing the waters as a self-employed consultant, she realized her reputation in the business community could buoy her pursuit as a solopreneur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once she went out on her own, the phone never stopped ringing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-rbc-rbc-block drop-shadow pos-rel top-line-blue block-wpr  mar-b-hlf\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-rbc-rbc-block-inner-block block-inner\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tldr\">TLDR<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list is-style-blue-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>A strong reputation and established credibility can win you referrals and help you recruit like-minded talent<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list is-style-blue-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Providing services beyond what your competitors offer enables you to stand out in the market<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list is-style-blue-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>When you tie your success to the success of your clients, you create a win-win scenario that results in sustainable growth<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A business built on credibility and referrals<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After two years as an independent consultant, Betteridge had more work than she could handle alone. She quickly diversified from consulting to outsourced accounting and bookkeeping and hired her first CPA. \u201cThat was a game changer because I was getting the recognition that I was building something. The credibility meant a lot in the market \u2013 that I was now attracting other CPAs who wanted to do the same thing, and achieve the work\/life balance I sought,\u201d says Betteridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Betteridge reveals that for the first five years of business,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cornerofficecfo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-91255-dedbf6dd\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"The Corner Office\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">The Corner Office<\/a>&nbsp;was 95% referral-based from other firms. \u201cBecause I wasn\u2019t doing tax accounting, they didn\u2019t view us as competitors, so they referred clients that needed help in areas they didn\u2019t service.\u201d More recently, however, as cloud accounting became mainstream, Betteridge and her team began building on their own reputation. \u201cFor the last 11 years we have marketed ourselves \u2013 our customers are more community-based, and our referrals are as well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Beyond accounting: End-to-end services help fuel growth<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Betteridge reveals that her team has a large growth agenda. From 2019 to 2020, they grew 112%. Even during COVID, they grew 10-12% and following the pandemic they have grown more than 30% every year. \u201cWe are growing our team and we have expanded our space \u2013 and we are constantly selling,\u201d shares Betteridge. \u201cWe\u2019re always talking to new people and constantly hiring for growth. We have nine CPAs on our roster, including me, and we have a long list of people we are either talking to or targeting right now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What has been the secret to such consistent growth? While there are several factors that contribute to their success, a key factor is the breadth of services they provide. For instance, their data and systems analysts provide a full range of technology services for clients \u2013 from data migration to dashboards and reporting to resource optimization. \u201cFor example, we have clients who are on old software and can\u2019t do the reporting they want, because the data isn\u2019t there for them. So, we put in software that enables them to make decisions. We do work that the average accounting firm can\u2019t do,\u201d says Betteridge by way of example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She adds that it\u2019s the technology side of their business that will likely expand the most in the coming year. \u201cWe\u2019re always looking for the next technology advancement that\u2019s going to make things better for our clients.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The other major contributor to growth is their focus on relationships \u2013 both creating and maintaining them. \u201cWe do a lot of networking and keep relationships close. We do a lot of open houses and sponsor many local events,\u201d says Betteridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Betteridge adds their relationship with RBC has supported its growth plans through strategic financing that has allowed them to invest in the resources and infrastructure necessary to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving market.
