Follow These 3 Tips to Protect Yourself from Scams"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri Light', sans-serif;color: black\">\u00a0\u201cFraud fatigue\u201d seems to be settling into the Canadian psyche with\u00a0two thirds of Canadians feeling tired of being on constant alert according to RBC\u2019s annual\u00a0<i>Fraud Prevention Month\u00a0<\/i>poll. One-third also admit to letting their guard down which is easy to understand.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri Light', sans-serif;color: black\">An overwhelming 98% of respondents believe scams are getting more targeted and sophisticated and&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri Light', sans-serif;color: black\">nearly nine out of 10 (89%) report they have seen a rise in scam attempts more than ever before (up from 77% in 2023).&nbsp;What\u2019s more, most believe it\u2019s getting harder and harder to recognize scams.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-importance-of-staying-proactive\">The importance of staying proactive<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri Light', sans-serif;color: black\">If you\u2019re suffering from fraud fatigue, you\u2019re not alone. But it\u2019s just as important as ever to protect yourself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri Light', sans-serif;color: black\">Although dealing with scam attempts can feel frustrating, failing to protect yourself can result in significant losses, including money, personal data, or both.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri Light', sans-serif;color: black\">The good news is that defending yourself from fraud doesn\u2019t have to be difficult or time-consuming.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-three-tips-to-help-protect-yourself-from-fraud\">Three tips to help protect yourself from fraud<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-pause-before-acting\">1. Pause before acting.\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri Light', sans-serif;color: black\">Imagine you have received a message that is pressuring you to act on something urgently. Perhaps a package you\u2019re waiting for is held up in customs and you need to provide payment to release it; or suspicious activity has been reported your bank account and you\u2019re asked to share your PIN in order to protect your money.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri Light', sans-serif;color: black\">This is the time to pause and ask yourself a few key questions:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list is-style-blue-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Do you feel fearful or rushed to click on a link or take an action?\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Does the message include a reasonable request or does something feel off about it?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri Light', sans-serif;color: black\">With advanced technology, criminals can easily impersonate your family, friends and trusted sources, like your bank, and persuade you to share account or personal information. Keep in mind, if something looks fishy, it probably is!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-set-up-protection-features\">2. Set up protection features.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri Light', sans-serif;color: black\">More good news is that tools to protect yourself and add extra layers of security have continued to evolve in order to stay a step ahead of fraudsters. Consider these essential features to keep your information secure:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list is-style-blue-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>Alerts<\/strong>: There are several types of alerts that send a notification if there is out-of-the-ordinary activity on an account. Signing up for alerts is an excellent way to stay on top of your money and activity within your accounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list is-style-blue-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>A fraud alert<\/strong>\u00a0will notify by text message if there\u2019s an unusual\u00a0<em>Interac<\/em>\u00a0e-Transfer transaction made or if a credit card transaction appears out of place.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list is-style-blue-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>A transaction alert<\/strong>\u00a0will send a notification if, for instance, an account balance drops before a certain set threshold, or a large purchase is made on a credit card.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>Multi-Factor Authentication:<\/strong>\u00a0Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), also known as 2-Step Verification or Two-Factor Authentication (2FA), makes it harder for criminals to steal information because it uses two separate factors for identification:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list is-style-blue-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>One is typically a username and password,\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list is-style-blue-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>while the other could be a cellphone, fingerprint, or other biometric data. While some apps and websites use MFA automatically, some leave the decision up to the user.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>Face ID and fingerprint features<\/strong>: Like with MFA, these biometric features add an extra layer of security that help keep data secure.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>Strong passwords:<\/strong>\u00a0Passwords are the first line of defense against fraudsters, but many people have less-than-ideal password behaviour. From having simple passwords (such as \u201cpassword\u201d) to using the same passwords for every site, many online users leave themselves open to hacking. Strong passwords are important \u2013 and while they can feel like a pain to set up \u2013 they are invaluable in keeping information safe.
