However, recent research underscores growing pressure points: productivity growth has slowed, domestic commercialization capacity lags peer nations and competition for capital, talent and innovation is intensifying globally \u2013 challenges highlighted in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mnp.ca\/en\/clients\/food-and-beverage-processing\/momentum-is-building-canadas-rise-in-global-agri-food\">MNP Global Agri-Food Report<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To unpack what this means in practise, Natasha Shute, Director of Sustainable Finance at RBC, moderated a discussion with leaders spanning farming and food manufacturing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list is-style-blue-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>Joshua Goodman<\/strong>, Head of Corporate Sustainability at Sobeys<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>Taylor Stanley<\/strong>, Corporate Impact Strategy at Riverside Natural Foods<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>Jason Persall<\/strong>, President of Persall Fine Foods<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Together, they explored how Canada can strengthen its food advantage \u2013 by nurturing innovation at home, enhancing regional capacity and creating a resilient ecosystem that can compete globally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-rbc-s-natasha-shute-shares-her-key-takeaways-from-the-discussion\">RBC\u2019s Natasha Shute shares her key takeaways from the discussion:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-canada-s-food-future-depends-on-the-next-generation-and-on-keeping-innovation-at-home\">1. Canada\u2019s food future depends on the next generation \u2013 and on keeping innovation at home<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Canada\u2019s agriculture sector has long been a foundation of the national economy and identity. Yet, as highlighted in the discussion and by the MNP Global Agri-Food Report, there is a lag in private R&amp;D investment and commercialization capacity compared with peer countries. While Canada generates strong research and early-stage innovation, too often that innovation is scaled elsewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This innovation gap has implications beyond competitiveness. Research from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbc.com\/en\/thought-leadership\/climate-action-institute\/agriculture-reports\/the-next-generation-of-growth-cultivating-a-new-crop-of-agriculture-talent-and-innovators-2\/\">RBC Climate Action Institute\u2019s Next Generation of Growth report<\/a> points to widening gaps in talent pipelines, access to capital and domestic scaling opportunities for agri-food innovators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, the nature of agriculture is changing. Modern farming and food production are increasingly tech-enabled, data-driven and entrepreneurial, requiring new skills, business models and financing structures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Closing this gap will require:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list is-style-blue-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Expanding access to capital, training and entrepreneurial support for agri-food innovators.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Strengthening pathways that connect research, private investment and real-world deployment.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Building talent pipelines aligned with the evolving nature of agriculture&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Farming today isn\u2019t what it was a generation ago. It\u2019s tech-enabled, data-driven, entrepreneurial and very much purpose-oriented \u2013 but many young people don\u2019t see it that way. Real progress happens when every part of the value chain works together. Building stronger regional supply chains, investing in data-driven sustainability measurement and linking innovation clusters with financing will help keep Canadian ingenuity competitive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider how technology is amplifying what\u2019s possible. AI and data tools are helping farmers measure emissions, monitor soil health and optimize production. Carbonhound, for instance, helps companies collect data on their GHG emissions by using a carbon management tool, which can help to automate data collection and track the impact of business operations.
