The model lessens demand on natural resources by requiring fewer newly extracted or imported inputs.<\/p><\/li>\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\"><p>Commercial flooring company Interface introduced circular manufacturing processes in the 2000s by developing take-back programs and new product lines that reuse post-consumer materials.<\/p><\/li>\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\"><p>Circularity requires investment, and businesses may find benefits beyond direct return on investment, such as customer value, regulatory compliance, or access to government incentives.<\/p><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><br>\n\n\n\n<p>For decades, most industrial manufacturing businesses have followed\u00a0a linear production model. With a \u201ctake-make-dispose\u201d approach, raw materials go in, products come out, and scrap, wastewater and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/eere\/ito\/waste-heat-recovery-basics\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-97755-6ac568e8\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"wasted energy\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">wasted energy<\/a>\u00a0are treated as unavoidable losses in the business. When end-of-life products can\u2019t be recovered, they are incinerated or dumped in landfills. All the while, demand for newly extracted raw materials to feed the process\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/resources\/Global-Resource-Outlook-2024\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-97755-a4afdcb2\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"keeps growing\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">keeps growing<\/a>. In Canada,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cca-reports.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Turning-Point_digital.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-97755-c4172d66\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"nearly 94% of manufacturing\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">nearly 94% of manufacturing<\/a>\u00a0employs linear production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Circular manufacturing offers a different path. The approach is designed to cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and waste by recovering leftover materials, energy and water. It also keeps materials in use longer, which can lessen demand on natural resources and reduce dependency on newly extracted or imported inputs. Globally,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/content.ellenmacarthurfoundation.org\/m\/4f9262ce7c358709\/original\/The-Nature-Imperative-How-the-circular-economy-tackles-biodiversity-loss.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-97755-4577b1f9\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"more than 90%\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">more than 90%<\/a>\u00a0of biodiversity loss and water stress is caused by extracting and processing natural resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today\u2019s manufacturing businesses are being reshaped by a laundry list of pressures that stretch well beyond the factory floor. A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbc.com\/en\/thought-leadership\/the-trade-zone\/supply-chain-chaos-on-the-high-seas\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-97755-4414c18b\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"turbulent geopolitical landscape\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">turbulent geopolitical landscape<\/a>\u00a0is redrawing global trade routes and disrupting long-standing supply relationships. Source materials like metals, minerals and timber are under increasing strain, making them scarcer and more expensive to access. Governing bodies are tightening the rules around what manufacturers are legally responsible for, and introducing pricing models that make\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/climate.ec.europa.eu\/eu-action\/carbon-markets\/international-carbon-pricing-and-markets-diplomacy_en\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-97755-2cfd22ae\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"carbon-intensive production\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">carbon-intensive production<\/a>\u00a0methods less viable. Atlanta-based commercial flooring company\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.interface.com\/US\/en-US.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-97755-929a196f\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"Interface\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">Interface<\/a>\u00a0began the journey three decades ago and offers a practical example of what\u2019s possible. They recently committed to becoming\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.interface.com\/content\/dam\/interfaceinc\/interface\/sustainability\/global\/esg\/esg-report\/2024%20Impact%20Report-June%2020_FINAL.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-97755-91fc005e\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"carbon negative by 2040\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">carbon negative by 2040<\/a>, which means the company will remove more GHGs from the atmosphere than it emits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re constantly evaluating our products, supply chain and factories to reduce waste, lower carbon emissions and ensure that decisions have a strong business case,\u201d says Liz Minn\u00e9, Interface\u2019s Head of Global Sustainability Strategy. \u201cSustainability doesn\u2019t just mean the environment. It means people and it means profit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-does-circular-manufacturing-cut-down-on-waste\">How does circular manufacturing cut down on waste?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Where linear manufacturing processes let waste exit the system,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ellenmacarthurfoundation.org\/topics\/circular-economy-introduction\/overview#:~:text=What%20is%20the%20meaning%20of,%2C%20people%2C%20and%20the%20environment.\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-97755-45892369\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"circular manufacturing models\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">circular manufacturing models<\/a>\u00a0feed it back in. Products are designed so components can be separated, recovered and reused, reducing waste and reliance on newly-extracted, raw materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a circular model, scrap and offcuts from the production process become material for new products, while goods recovered at the end of their usable life are broken down so the materials can be reused. Water is recirculated and excess heat is captured to power other operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Companies can take different approaches to circular production, shaped by their materials, processes and markets. Interface\u2019s focus has been on redesigning its manufacturing processes to reduce the amount of new material needed in its products, and to recirculate resources like energy and water. The company uses\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.workdesign.com\/2025\/04\/interface-introduces-carbon-negative-products-yes-you-read-that-right\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-97755-ccd32b16\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"100% renewable electricity\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">100% renewable electricity<\/a>\u00a0across its factories and manufacturing sites worldwide. It has also focused on reducing water use since 1990, with initiatives like recirculating water through carpet tile production processes, and opting for solution-dyed yarn to eliminate water-based dying processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through the company\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.interface.com\/content\/dam\/interfaceinc\/interface\/sustainability\/emea\/reentry\/brochure\/ReEntry%20Brochure_EN_NL.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-97755-1b43f968\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"take-back program\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">take-back program<\/a>, used carpet tiles are either reused\u2014sometimes through donations to small businesses or community and charitable organizations\u2014or processed so their materials can be reintegrated into new products. Since 2016, Interface has recovered\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/s205.q4cdn.com\/354928249\/files\/doc_presentations\/2025\/Interface-2024-IMPACT-REPORT.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-97755-a20955ac\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"more than 38,000 tonnes\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">more than 38,000 tonnes<\/a>\u00a0of post-consumer carpet tile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe bring products back and recycle them: chop them up into little pieces and then put them in future backings,\u201d explains Minn\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Decisions made in the early design stages have the power to shape how much material is lost. For instance, in 2000 Interface designed Entropy \u00ae, one of the company\u2019s modular carpet tile lines, in a way that reduces its installation waste to about 1.5%. That\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.interface.com\/content\/dam\/interfaceinc\/interface\/sustainability\/emea\/25th-anniversary-report\/Interface_MissionZeroCel_Booklet_EN.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-97755-cb01babf\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"compared\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">compared<\/a>\u00a0with 3-4% for typical modular carpet and roughly 14% for traditional roll carpet. It did this by creating tiles made with colours that can blend together, rather than requiring matching dye lots, and can be installed in any configuration. Over the last 25 years, Interface has continued to add new collections and styles, which offer the same benefit of reduced waste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, 52% of Interface\u2019s raw materials are either\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.interface.com\/content\/dam\/interfaceinc\/interface\/sustainability\/global\/made-for-sustainability\/brochure\/Global%20Sustainability%20Brochure_US_EN.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-97755-669b7e90\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"recycled or derived from plants\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">recycled or derived from plants<\/a>\u2014resources that produce fewer GHGs than conventional alternatives.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe approach is always, \u2018How do we minimize what\u2019s going in?\u2019\u201d Minn\u00e9 adds. \u201cOnce we have that minimum, it\u2019s \u2018How do we find renewable sources, ways to recirculate, and then how do we recover our products?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-does-circularity-help-to-reduce-climate-related-risks\">How does circularity help to reduce climate-related risks?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-get-ahead-of-incoming-regulation-and-policy-that-could-affect-operations\">Get ahead of incoming regulation and policy that could affect operations<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Business may be feeling the pressure to move away from waste-intensive linear models as regulations tightening at both ends of the product lifecycle:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list is-style-blue-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>At the design stage, the European Union\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/green-forum.ec.europa.eu\/implementing-ecodesign-sustainable-products-regulation_en\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-97755-ab566120\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation<\/a>\u00a0introduces new requirements around durability, repairability and recyclability.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd.org\/environment\/extended-producer-responsibility.htm\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-97755-bb324f50\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"Extended Producer Responsibility\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">Extended Producer Responsibility<\/a>\u00a0(EPR) programs are expanding globally, shifting end-of-life costs, including collection, recycling and disposal, back onto manufacturers. In Canada, federal and provincial EPRs are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gowlingwlg.com\/en\/insights-resources\/articles\/2025\/canadian-product-stewardship-and-epr\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-97755-f0536810\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"expanding across sectors\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">expanding across sectors<\/a>, from packaging, electronics, textiles and apparel to building materials, food production, batteries and hazardous products.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>The government has also introduced a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/environment-climate-change\/services\/managing-reducing-waste\/reduce-plastic-waste\/federal-plastics-registry.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-97755-fc7427ef\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"Federal Plastics Registry\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">Federal Plastics Registry<\/a>\u00a0that requires companies that manufacture, import or sell plastic products and packaging to report annually on the plastics they put in the market, part of a broader agenda to build a national\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/environment-climate-change\/services\/managing-reducing-waste\/reduce-plastic-waste\/canada-action.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-97755-a68c661e\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"circular economy\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">circular economy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-manage-exposure-to-global-supply-chain-disruptions\">Manage exposure to global supply chain disruptions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Supply chain disruptions cost organizations an estimated\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsheld.com\/about-us\/news\/global-supply-chain-disruptions-and-risks-intensify-2025-j-s-held-global-risk-report-highlights-key-challenges\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-97755-5d123bcd\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"US$184 billion annually\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">US$184 billion annually<\/a>, driven by a widening range of risks, including global conflict, trade disputes, natural disasters and a growing dependence on critical minerals such as lithium, cobalt and nickel concentrated in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hillnotes.ca\/2025\/09\/23\/the-critical-minerals-supply-chain-building-canadas-resilience-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-97755-4c36c005\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"handful of countries\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">handful of countries<\/a>. Under standard greenhouse gas protocols, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbcroyalbank.com\/en-ca\/my-money-matters\/business\/right-sized-business-advice\/commercial\/emissions-explained-understanding-scope-1-2-and-3-in-your-business\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-97755-763c68c1\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"company\u2019s emissions profile\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">company\u2019s emissions profile<\/a>\u00a0is divided into three categories:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list is-style-blue-disc\">\n    <li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\"><strong>Scope 1<\/strong> covers direct emissions from owned operations.<\/li>\n    <li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\"><strong>Scope 2<\/strong> accounts for indirect emissions from purchased energy; and<\/li>\n    <li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\"><strong>Scope 3<\/strong> captures emissions across the rest of the value chain, including purchased materials, transportation and a product\u2019s end of life.<\/li>\n<\/ul><br>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-role-does-scope-3-play-in-a-business-s-value-chain\">What role does Scope 3 play in a business\u2019s value chain?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For most manufacturers, Scope 3 represents the largest share of GHG emissions \u2014often\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/instituteofsustainabilitystudies.com\/insights\/lexicon\/scope-3-emissions-corporate-sustainability-challenge\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-97755-94108c20\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"70% or more\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">70% or more<\/a>\u00a0of total emissions. That\u2019s creating pressure in both directions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Downstream, buyer expectations are shifting<\/strong>. Large customers, which often have their own emissions targets to meet, are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.deloitte.com\/us\/en\/services\/consulting\/articles\/scope-3-sustainable-procurement.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-97755-f5bdf5ba\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"increasingly asking suppliers\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">increasingly asking suppliers<\/a>\u00a0to demonstrate how they are reducing GHG emissions impacts across production, materials and end-of-life management, with those expectations increasingly embedded in procurement and reporting processes. Those expectations are now showing up directly in contracts and supplier reporting requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>That pressure flows back through the supply chain.<\/strong>\u00a0For many manufacturers, upstream materials represent the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/capabilities\/sustainability\/our-insights\/sustainability-blog\/tackling-scope-3-emissions-through-supplier-collaboration\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-97755-b37b4dea\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"single largest share of total GHG emissions\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">single largest share of total GHG emissions<\/a>. It urged its yarn suppliers to develop a recycled nylon that could meet performance and durability requirements. Some of its partners dismissed the idea as unrealistic. One supplier chose to invest in research and development, eventually producing a recycled nylon that significantly reduced Interface\u2019s upstream emissions. The same material is now widely sourced by other flooring manufacturers and fashion brands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s been a business benefit for them and, of course, a business benefit for us, as well,\u201d says Minn\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More recently, Interface conducted an assessment of its top 20 suppliers (accounting for 80% of GHG emissions from purchased goods) using an internally developed framework. The scale is designed to give Interface a consistent way to start conversations with its suppliers about where they are in their emissions reduction journey and what a realistic next step might look like. In some cases, this might include learning from other suppliers that are further along than Interface itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By 2030, the company\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.interface.com\/content\/dam\/interfaceinc\/interface\/sustainability\/global\/esg\/esg-report\/Interface%202023%20ESG%20Impact%20Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" data-dig-id=\"LP-97755-9a764f12\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"aims to reduce\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">aims to reduce<\/a>\u00a0absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 50%, reduce Scope 3 emissions from purchased goods and services by half, and reduce business travel and employee commuting emissions by 30%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In competitive markets, that effort increasingly matters to the bottom line. \u201cIf it\u2019s a one-to-one decision between a competitor, and we have better carbon emissions, that\u2019s a definite advantage,\u201d says Minn\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-can-businesses-start-to-think-about-circular-manufacturing\">How can businesses start to think about circular manufacturing?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Circular production requires investment, coordination and often a willingness to rethink long-standing processes. It also doesn\u2019t have to happen all at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c[Environmental] sustainability is definitely a long game,\u201d says Minn\u00e9. \u201cBut every single project that we do has to have a business case.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That doesn\u2019t always mean direct return on investment. Sometimes the return comes through customer value, staying ahead of regulation or accessing government incentives for lower-carbon production. For companies just starting out on the circularity journey, small wins can open the door to larger changes\u2014and innovation doesn\u2019t always require big budgets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interface, for instance, previously facilitated an internal program that invited workers on the manufacturing floor to submit ideas for reducing waste. If an idea delivered savings, the employee received a bonus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThose people are on the machines every day. They have ideas that management would never think of,\u201d explains Minn\u00e9. \u201cUsing those small successes to build momentum is really important.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-advice-for-businesses-moving-towards-a-circular-manufacturing-model\">Advice for businesses moving towards a circular manufacturing model<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Thirty years of experience at Interface point to a few principles for manufacturers looking to build circularity into their operations, regardless of sector or scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Minn\u00e9 recommends starting with a pilot project and learning from it \u2014 whether it works or not. \u201cUsing those small successes to build momentum is really important,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From there, look at where value may be leaving the business through scrap, wasted energy, water, excess inventory, or products that have to be remade. Quantifying the associated costs makes it possible to identify where circular approaches offer the strongest return and build the business case to pursue them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every product or new idea should make money or save money\u2014ideally, both.
