A little annoying? Sure. Are they worth it? Absolutely. Get the rundown on MFA, why it\u2019s nearly everywhere and how it protects you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-is-multi-factor-authentication\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is multi-factor authentication?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Multi-factor authentication \u2013 sometimes called MFA, two-factor authentication (2FA) or 2-Step Verification \u2013 is a security measure that asks you to prove you\u2019re really you in more than one way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Signing in to an account typically requires&nbsp;<strong>something you know<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 such as your password, PIN or answer to a security question. Depending on the account, this second factor could involve:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list is-style-blue-disc\">\n    <li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\"><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Entering a one-time code sent by text or generated by an authenticator app<\/p><\/li>\n    <li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\"><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tapping a notification on a trusted device<\/p><\/li>\n    <li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\"><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scanning your fingerprint<\/p><\/li>\n    <li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\"><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Using facial recognition<\/p><\/li>\n<\/ul><br>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the technical-sounding name, MFA is pretty straightforward to set up. Most websites and apps walk you through the process from their security or account settings. And some companies have made it even easier. RBC, for instance, has made 2-Step Verification automatic for RBC Online Banking and the RBC Mobile app, so there\u2019s nothing for you to opt into.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Think of MFA as another lock on your digital front door. Your password may be the first lock; MFA means that someone who gets hold of that password still has another barrier to get through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-why-is-mfa-important\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is MFA important?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Passwords can fall into the wrong hands in all kinds of ways. You might accidentally enter yours into a convincing phishing site or malware could steal credentials you\u2019ve stored on a device. A company you have an account with could experience a data breach or a password you\u2019ve used elsewhere could become compromised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where the second factor makes a big difference. Consider the information that exists within the accounts you use every day:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list is-style-blue-disc\">\n    <li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\"><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Your email<\/strong>: May contain years of personal correspondence, documents and photos.<\/p><\/li>\n    <li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\"><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Your social media accounts<\/strong>: May contain conversations and details about your relationships, hobbies and travel.<\/p><\/li>\n    <li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\"><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Your shopping accounts<\/strong>: May store saved payment information, addresses and personal details.<\/p><\/li>\n<\/ul><br>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>And your bank account?<\/strong>&nbsp;That\u2019s your money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MFA can help put an extra barrier between a fraudster and every dollar sitting in your account. It can also help protect the personal and financial information connected to it. That\u2019s why an extra verification step can be worth a few seconds of inconvenience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-why-is-2-step-verification-turned-on-for-rbc-clients\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is 2-Step Verification turned on for RBC clients?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you bank with RBC, you may have noticed that setting up 2-Step Verification is already handled for you. With this feature enabled, a message is sent to your trusted device (i.e., your smartphone) each time you \u2013 or someone else \u2013 signs in to your account. If you\u2019re not the one signing in, you can stop the attempt by selecting \u201cDo Not Allow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-how-do-you-turn-on-multi-factor-authentication-on-other-accounts\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do you turn on multi-factor authentication on other accounts?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you bank with RBC, your banking is covered. Now it\u2019s worth setting it up on the rest of your accounts.
