The 5th annual Halifax Innovation Challenge is here! This is a chance to build meaningful skills and provides a networking experience for post-secondary students in Nova Scotia.

This year’s theme is Rapid Growth- with a focus on emerging technology (AI), diversity & inclusion, and city infrastructure & housing.

The Opportunity

  • To solve real business challenges and demonstrate your skills. Explore dynamic career opportunities. Network with senior leaders and learn from technology and innovation experts.

The Reward

  • A cash prize of $1200 for the winning team with many other small prizes to be awarded!

Problem Statement

Over the past decade, Nova Scotia has experienced explosive population growth. From skilled immigrants to international graduates to inter-provincial migration, people are moving to Nova Scotia in record numbers.  This rapid growth has created significant challenges in the housing market with demand outpacing supply.  With an aging skilled trade workforce, the question being asked is “Who will build the housing Nova Scotia needs to continue to grow?” Immigration of skilled trades people is the solution.

Your challenge is to identify and verify the credentials of skilled trades people from around the world utilizing technology.  Keep in mind that certain regions have experience working with specific building materials which may or may not be commonly used in Nova Scotia.  Also remember that trade certification programs vary country by country, and only certain countries have an equivalent of the Red Seal program Canada uses.

How do we make Nova Scotia one of North America’s most attractive destinations for digital talent and companies?

The global demand for computer scientists and tech talent has reached unprecedented heights. Nova Scotia, renowned for its exceptional quality of life and flourishing tech landscape, stands poised to help meet this demand. The imperative is clear: Nova Scotia must cultivate a robust tech talent pipeline and attract companies to establish roots within its borders. To do so, we must address the following:

  • Business Attraction: What incentives and infrastructure can entice companies to invest in Nova Scotia, thereby bolstering its position as a prominent technology hub in North America?

  • Talent Development: How can we nurture the tech talent pipeline comprehensively, starting from K-12 education through post-secondary and into early careers, ensuring that every Nova Scotian has an opportunity to participate in the tech industry?

  • Inclusivity: How do we make certain that Nova Scotia’s technology ecosystem benefits all its citizens, including rural and diverse communities?

How can we transform Nova Scotia into one of North America’s most appealing jurisdictions for digital talent and tech companies? What innovative strategies, policies, collaborations, or solutions can address the challenges and opportunities associated with this transformation?

At RBC, our relationships with our clients are built on a foundation of trust. This trust extends to our technologies. As advancements in AI grow at a rapid pace, we have the opportunity to leverage its power for efficiency, automation, and hyper-personalization. However, we also have the responsibility to uphold our industry-leading standards of safety, transparency, and good governance.

In addition, a recent Royal Bank of Canada survey found younger Canadians are more likely to use artificial intelligence to manage their finances than their older counterparts. For example, the poll reported 71 per cent of respondents aged 18 to 34 find AI useful in automating savings.

How might we safely and ethically use data & AI to provide best-in-class financial solutions, advice, planning and recommendations to support the diverse needs of all our clients?
