What is an Interac e-Transfer?

An Interac e-Transfer allows you to send money to anyone who has an email address or mobile phone, and an account at a Canadian financial institution. To send money, all you need is access to RBC Online Banking and the email address or mobile phone of the person you’d like to send money to. To receive money, all you need is a bank account with a Canadian financial institution and an email address or mobile phone.

You can use the Interac e-Transfer service to:

  • Send money to family members, including children away at school
  • Pay money owed to a neighbour, a friend, or the babysitter
  • Transfer money between accounts you have at different financial institutions
  • Contribute to a group gift or event
  • Pay for an online auction item

How secure is an Interac e-Transfer?

Email / text messages are only used to notify the recipient that they have been sent a payment. The funds are not transferred through email or text, they are transferred through established banking channels that have been employed for years, like the method banks use for cashing cheques.

An additional level of security is provided by the security question. The recipient must correctly answer the question specified by you in order to access the funds.

An Interac e-Transfer will expire after 30 days. If the intended recipient has not accepted the transfer within 30 days, you will be notified that the payment has expired and will have the option to reclaim the funds.

If you do not cancel an unclaimed Interac e-Transfer within 15 calendar days after we’ve notified you of its expiry, we will return the funds to your account and apply a $5.00 reclaim fee.

Visit our Online Banking Security page for more information on RBC Online Banking’s security measures.
