Coverage

You can change the coverage that is shown here to compare the costs of different levels of coverage. For example, you can increase your liability coverage to $2,000,000 for added protection. Or, you can lower your premiums by increasing your deductibles—just make sure you can afford to pay the deductible amount you select in the event of a claim. Below is a detailed explanation of the coverage displayed.

In Canada, each province or territory sets its own regulations regarding the types of auto insurance coverage—and minimums—that are required by law. However, these minimums are guidelines only and do not always provide you with adequate financial protection. That's why we quote the coverage we recommend for your needs—not just the minimum coverage your province or territory requires.

Please select a coverage you would like to learn more about:

Liability Coverage or Civil Liability Coverage (Quebec only)
Direct Compensation Coverage (Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island only)
Accident Benefits (mandatory except in Quebec and Newfoundland)
Uninsured Automobile/Motorist Coverage (mandatory except in Quebec)
Collision and Comprehensive Coverages (Collision and upset and All Perils other than collision or upset in Quebec only)

Liability Coverage (Third Party Liability Coverage)

Every auto insurance policy includes protection against third-party liability—and for good reason. Liability coverage helps protect you financially if you (or another driver on your policy) are found legally liable for:

  • Injuring or killing someone
  • Causing damage to another person's property or automobile while operating a vehicle

In this type of situation, your insurance company would pay any legitimate claims† against you up to the limits of your liability coverage and also pay for expenses related to resolving the claims.

While every province requires a certain amount of liability coverage, the minimum amount required—$200,000 in Ontario and many other provinces—is not likely going to be enough if the courts order you to pay a substantial amount of money in damages.

We strongly recommend that you purchase at least $1 million in coverage. Plus, if you are leasing or financing a vehicle, your leasing company or lien holder may require at least $1 million in coverage to protect their interests.

For your online quote, you can choose either $1,000,000 or $2,000,000 in coverage. If you want to purchase less than $1 million, call us at 1-877-749-7224 and a Licensed Insurance Advisor will be happy to adjust the coverage amount and provide you with a more accurate quote. You should also check with your vehicle's leasing or financing company (if applicable) to make sure you are allowed to purchase less than $1 million.

Civil Liability Coverage
(Quebec only)

Civil liability coverage helps protect you financially if you (or another driver on your policy) are found legally liable for:

  • Damaging another person's property during an accident that occurs in Quebec
  • Causing physical damage and bodily injury to another person in an accident that occurs outside Quebec (including in the United States)

In this type of situation, your insurance would pay any legitimate claims† against you up to the limits of your Civil liability coverage and also pay for expenses related to resolving the claims.

As a Quebec resident, you are required to purchase a minimum of $50,000 in Civil liability coverage for your motor vehicle (a minimum of $500,000 is required for a snowmobile or all terrain vehicle). However, this amount is unlikely to be enough if the courts order you to pay a substantial amount of money in damages.

If you wish to purchase less than $1 million, please call us at 1-877-749-7224 and a Licensed Insurance Advisor will be happy to adjust the coverage amount and provide you with a more accurate quote. You should also check with your vehicle's leasing or financing company (if applicable) to make sure you are allowed to purchase less than $1 million.

Direct Compensation Coverage
(Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island only)

Required by law in Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and included as part of Civil Liability coverage in Quebec, Direct Compensation means you deal directly with us to make the claim, as opposed to involving the other driver's insurance company. Direct Compensation coverage includes repairs to, or replacement of, your vehicle (and its contents) if you have an accident that meets all of the following conditions:

  • The accident occurred in your home province and involved another vehicle
  • The other driver is found to be completely or partially at fault
  • The other driver has insurance through a company licensed in your home province

If you have an accident that does not occur under the circumstances noted above, you could make a claim under your Collision coverage instead, if you have that coverage.

If your home province is Ontario, you have the option to increase your Direct Compensation deductible (the out-of-pocket amount you would be responsible for) to help lower your premium. At RBC Insurance, we automatically quote your policy with a $0 deductible for Direct Compensation coverage. If you would like to increase your deductible to a higher amount, call us at 1-877-749-7224 and we'll be happy to give you an updated quote over the phone.

Accident Benefits
(Mandatory except in Quebec and Newfoundland)

A certain standard amount of Accident Benefits coverage is required by law in all provinces and territories except for Quebec and Newfoundland and is included in your quote. This coverage provides benefits if you are injured in a motor vehicle accident, regardless of fault, and can help:

If you are injured in a motor vehicle accident (regardless of fault), this coverage can help:

  • Replace your lost income
  • Pay for medical, rehabilitation and other expenses not covered by your government health insurance plan

The coverage may also provide a funeral benefit and death benefits to your eligible spouse or partner and dependent children if you are killed in a motor vehicle accident. In some provinces, such as Ontario, Accident Benefits may also help pay for childcare or a caregiver for your dependents.

The specific coverage and limits of standard Accident Benefits vary for each province and territory.

Uninsured Automobile/Motorist Coverage
(Mandatory except in Quebec)

Required in all provinces and territories except Quebec, Uninsured Motorist or Automobile coverage provides benefits to you or your family if you are injured or killed by an uninsured or unidentified driver. It also helps pay for damages to your vehicle.

The amount of coverage you are entitled to receive is based on your province or territory's minimum required liability coverage. For example, in Ontario, you or your family could receive up to $200,000 since that is the minimum amount of liability coverage required in Ontario.

Residents of all provinces and territories (except Quebec):

  • Your quote automatically reflects the Uninsured Motorist or Automobile coverage required by law.

Note: At RBC Insurance, we supplement this coverage by including the Family Protection Coverage endorsement in all auto insurance policies that we quote (except in Quebec). The Family Protection Coverage endorsement provides significant protection—up to the limits of your liability coverage—if you or your eligible family members are injured or killed in an accident caused by an uninsured, under insured or unidentified (e.g. hit and run) at-fault motorist.

Collision or Upset and Comprehensive Coverages
(Collision and upset and All perils other than collision or upset in Quebec only)

Unless your car or vehicle is very old or you can afford to repair or replace it out-of-pocket, we recommend both Collision and Comprehensive coverage. Plus, if you plan to lease or finance a vehicle, the leasing company or lien holder will require this coverage to protect their interests.

Collision or Upset (Collision and upset in Quebec only) coverage pays for the cost of repairing or replacing your vehicle if it hits another vehicle, the ground, or an object in or on the ground (such as a guard rail).

Comprehensive (All perils other than collision or upset in Quebec only) coverage pays for the cost of repairing or replacing your vehicle if it is damaged by other unexpected situations such as falling or flying objects, vandalism, fire, theft or attempted theft, a natural disaster, or a riot or civil disturbance (but not collision).

  • If you want Collision or Upset and Comprehensive coverage, from the drop-down list, select the deductible you want for each. The deductible is the amount you would pay out-of-pocket if your vehicle was damaged by a covered risk and you needed to make a claim.

For example, if your Comprehensive deductible is $500 and a hail storm causes $2,000 worth of damage to your vehicle, you would pay $500 and could make a claim for the remaining $1,500.

Tip: You can lower your premium by increasing your deductibles. Just be sure you can pay your deductible without difficulty in the event of a claim.

  • If you do not want either Collision or Upset or Comprehensive coverage (or both), from the drop-down list, select No Coverage.

For most people, Collision or Upset and Comprehensive coverage provide the right level of protection; however, there are other options, depending on your needs:

  • All Perils coverage combines Collision or Upset and Comprehensive coverage. In addition, it insures your vehicle against loss or damage should it be stolen by someone living in your home or by someone you have hired to drive, service or repair your vehicle.

  • Specified Perils (Specific perils in Quebec) coverage insures your vehicle against specific situations only (such as fire, theft or attempted theft, some natural disasters, and riots or civil disturbances).

If you are interested in purchasing either All Perils or Specified Perils coverage, please call us at 1-877-749-7224 and a Licensed Insurance Advisor will be happy to add that to your quote.

A claim is a request to an insurance company for payment for loss, damage or injury as covered by an auto insurance policy.
