RBC® Visa Prepaid eGift Card Agreement
This Agreement governs the use of your RBC eGift VISA Prepaid Card. Be sure to read it. You can also print or save a copy to refer to later- What this Agreement Covers
This Agreement outlines the terms that apply to a RBC eGift VISA Prepaid Card (the “Card”) issued by Royal Bank of Canada. It also tells you what your rights and duties are as the Sender of the Card or the Receiver (cardholder) and what the duties of Royal Bank of Canada are as the Card issuer.
We have also prepared “Frequently Asked Questions” (“FAQs”) that contain important information about the use of your Card. You can view these FAQs by visiting www.rbc.com/egift or if you are a sender by signing in to the RBC Wallet app, or if you are a Receiver by signing in to the RBC eGift app and viewing the support page. Please read the FAQs as they form part of this Agreement.
If you are the Sender your purchase of the Card, and if you are the Receiver of the Card your receipt or use of a Card, means that you have received and read this Agreement and the FAQs and agreed to all of these terms. This Agreement takes effect when the Card is received by the Receiver.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR CARD
Card Issuer: Your Card is issued by Royal Bank of Canada
Information, Card Balance: For questions about this Agreement or your Card, including your Card balance, sign in to the RBC eGift app or call Royal Bank toll-free at 1-833-263-6688 within Canada or the United States. To check your card balance sign in to the RBC eGift app, select the Payment Cards tab and view your card details. All amounts are expressed in Canadian dollars.
Card not reloadable: This card cannot be reloaded.
No CDIC Insurance: Your Card balance is not insured by the Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation.
Card Restrictions: Your Card is a digital card which means that it can be used at retailers that accept Visa contactless (tap) payments with your mobile device. Transaction limits for in-person tap purchases are typically limited to $100 per transaction. These limits may not apply when your Card is used to pay online and by telephone with retailers who accept these payments. Your Card can’t be used at retailers that accept Visa cards but do not accept contactless (tap) point of sale payments. It also cannot be used to make any type of cash withdrawal such as from an ATM or in person at a financial institution. You can make a purchase that is greater than the balance on your card if the retailer allows split payments. Retailers won’t be able to check the balance of your RBC eGift Card, so you’ll need to verify your balance in the RBC eGift app or by calling toll-free 1-833-263-6688 in Canada or the United States and advise the merchant in advance that you will be splitting the payment . You will need to tell the merchant the amount that you would like to have paid with your RBC eGift Card .
No Funds Expiry: Your right to use the funds that are loaded on the Card will not expire but your Card expires at the end of the month associated with your Card. You must not use your Card or your Card number if your Card has expired. You may request a free replacement Card at any time with a new expiry date by contacting us as long as you still have funds on your Card. The remaining balance on your original Card will be placed on your new Card at no additional cost. You can check the expiry date on the Payment Cards Tab page of the RBC eGift App or by calling us at 1-833-263-6688.
Card Fees: The following fees apply to your Card:
Type of Fee Amount of Fee Inactivity Fee A monthly fee of $2.50 charged starting in the 13th month after 12 consecutive months of inactivity from the time you accept the Card. Your Card is considered inactive in any month you do not have any financial transactions on your card, and the fee will only be charged in those months. Foreign Currency Conversion – transactions in a foreign currency will be converted into Canadian dollars no later than the date Royal Bank posts the transaction to the Card at an exchange rate that is 2.5% over a benchmark rate Royal Bank of Canada pays the payment card network that is in effect on the date of conversion. Information about Fees that apply to your Card, as set out in the information box above, is also available by calling Royal Bank toll-free at 1-833-263-6688 within Canada or the United States. Fees may change. If they do, Royal Bank will tell you in advance as described below under “Changing or Ending this Agreement”.
What happens if my Card or Device gets compromised, stolen or misused?
You must contact Royal Bank immediately:
- if your Card or Device is compromised, stolen or misused;
- if you suspect that someone else is using your Card or your Card number; or
- if you suspect that your Card is compromised.
Once you have told Royal Bank that your Card or Device has been lost, stolen or misused, Royal Bank will be able to prevent use of the Card and the Card number. Royal Bank can also block use of your Card and prevent use of your Card number without telling you if Royal Bank suspects unauthorized or fraudulent use of the Card or the Card number.
- Definitions
Here are some key terms used in this Agreement and what they mean:
- “Device” means any mobile device, computer or other device you use to purchase or use your Card.
- “Sender” means the person who purchased the Card and directed Royal Bank to deliver the Card to the Receiver
- “Receiver” means the person who receives and accepts the Card from the Purchaser through the RBC eGift App
- “RBC eGift App” means the app that that the Receiver downloads to a mobile device for the purpose of receiving and accepting the Card and to access certain services with respect to the Card
- “You” or “Your” means the Sender or Receiver
- “We”, “our”, “us” or “Royal Bank” means Royal Bank of Canada
- Rights and duties of the Purchaser
The sole right of a Sender of this Card is the right, having purchased the Card, to instruct Royal Bank to deliver the Card to the Recipient.
The Sender may cancel the Card and receive a refund at any time before the Receiver receives and accepts the Card. Once the Card has been received and accepted by the receiver, the purchaser has no right to request a refund or cancellation of the Card. If the Card is not received and accepted by the Receiver within thirty (30) days of receiving the gift link, it will be cancelled and the funds will be returned to the Sender by crediting the Royal Bank credit card or deposit account from which the payment for the Card was made.
We are required by law to collect personal information about the Sender and the Receiver for identification and recordkeeping purposes. Refer to the “Protecting Your Privacy” section of this agreement
- Rights and duties of the Receiver
Using Your Card
This Card, the Card balance or any other record relating to the Card:
- is a digital prepaid card account only. There is no physical card issued at any time or for any purpose.
- is not refundable and may not be cancelled by you;
- is not a deposit with us or related to or connected in any way with a bank account with us;
- does not constitute evidence of indebtedness or liability by us to you, except to honour transactions initiated with the Card as provided for in this Agreement; there is no interest payable to you on any Card balance; and
This Card may only be used and directed by the Receiver and it is non-transferable. You can use your Card and your Card number for any permitted purpose, including paying for goods and services, whether you buy in person from a retailer that accepts contactless (tap) purchases with your mobile device, over the phone, on the Internet or by mail order. You may not use your Card or your Card number for any illegal, improper or unlawful purpose. We also reserve the right to prevent your Card or your Card number from being used for certain types of transactions as determined by us, including transactions connected to Internet gambling.
- Protection Against unauthorized use
If someone uses your Card or your Card number to make a purchase or otherwise obtain the benefits of your Card, you will be fully liable for all charges incurred in connection with such use except in cases of fraudulent or unauthorized use. You will not be responsible for charges to your Card as a result of the fraudulent and unauthorized use provided that you (i) are able to establish to our reasonable satisfaction that you have taken reasonable steps to protect your Card against loss or theft, (ii) cooperate fully with our investigation, and (iii) did not contribute to the unauthorized use of your Card or Card number. Treat this Card as you would cash, and contact us immediately if your Card is compromised or stolen or if someone else may know your Card number. “Unauthorized use” means use by a person other than you who does not have actual, implied or apparent authority for such use, and from which you do not receive any benefit.
- Problems with a Purchase
If you have problems with anything you buy using your Card or your Card number, you must settle the problem directly with the store or merchant. In some circumstances, we may be able to provide assistance in resolving disputed or declined transactions.
- Limitations on our Liability
We try to ensure that your Card and Card number are accepted when presented. However, we will not be liable to you for damages (including special, indirect or consequential damages) that may result if, for any reason, your Card or Card number is not accepted or you are unable to access your balance or any information about your Card.
- Amending or Cancelling this Agreement
Amendments: We may amend this Agreement at any time. if we increase a fee, establish a new fee, or make any other changes, we will let you know by sending a notice to the most recent mailing or email address we have for you at least 30 days in advance, and by posting online at www.rbc.com/egift at least 60 days in advance.
If your Card or Card number is used after the Agreement is amended, it will mean you accept the amendments we have made. If you do not accept any amendments we have made, you can stop using the Card.
Cancellation: We may cancel this Agreement at any time without telling you in advance if we reasonably believe that (i) your Card or Card number is being or is likely to be misused; or (ii) you are in breach of this Agreement. In all other instances, we will let you know at least 30 days in advance by posting online at www.rbc.com/egift or, at our discretion, by sending you written or electronic notice, and you will be able to receive the balance on your Card by contacting us. This Agreement will also terminate when the balance on your Card is or becomes zero.
- Financial Consumer Agency of Canada
If you have a complaint about a potential violation of federal consumer protection laws, you may contact us or you may contact the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada in writing at 6th Floor, Enterprise Building, 427 Laurier Avenue West, Ottawa, Ontario K1R 1B9. You may contact them at 1-866-461-3222 (English) or 1-866-461-2232 (French), or through their website at www.fcac-acfc.gc.ca.
- Interpreting and enforcing this Agreement
This Agreement is made in and will be interpreted in accordance with the applicable laws of the province or territory in which you reside (or the applicable laws of Ontario if you reside outside Canada) and the applicable laws of Canada. In the event of a dispute, you agree that the courts in the province or territory where you reside shall be competent to hear such dispute and you agree to be bound by any judgment of that court.

Both of us, you and we, have requested that this Agreement and any related documents be written in English. Les parties à la présente convention, soit vous et nous, ont demandé que cette convention et tout document connexe soient rédigés en anglais.
- Protecting Your Privacy
Except as varied below, the consents and authorizations contained in this Agreement will not change any other consent, authorization or preference you have given or may give to us regarding the collection, use and disclosure of your information.
Collecting your personal information
You authorize us to collect, use and disclose your personal information including information required for the Sender to purchase the Card, and information the Receiver provided to us while using the Card. We may obtain information from service arrangements you make with or through us, from references you provide to us and from other sources, as is necessary for the use of the Card.
Using your personal information
This information may be used from time to time for the following purposes in connection with your Card:
- to verify your identity and investigate your personal background;
- to operate your Card and provide you with services you may request;
- to determine your eligibility for products and services we offer;
- to communicate to you any benefit, feature and other information;
- to operate the Card through the payment card network;
- to help us better manage our business and your relationship with us; and
- as required or permitted by law.
For these purposes, we may (i) make this information available to our employees, our agents and service providers, who are required to maintain the confidentiality of this information; and (ii) share this information with other financial institutions. In the event our service provider is located outside Canada, the service provider is bound by, and the information may be disclosed in accordance with, the laws of the jurisdiction in which that service provider is located. Upon your request, we may give this information to other persons.
We may combine this information with any other information we hold about you and use it for any purpose you have otherwise consented to. We may also use this information and share it with our subsidiaries to (i) manage our risks and operations and those of our subsidiaries; and (ii) to comply with valid requests for information about you from regulators, government agencies, public bodies or other entities who have a right to issue such requests.
Other uses of your personal information.
We may use this information to promote our products and services, and promote products and services of third parties we select, which may be of interest to you. We may communicate with you through various channels, including telephone, computer or mail, using the contact information you have provided.
We may also, where not prohibited by law, share this information with RBC companies for the purpose of referring you to them or promoting to you products and services which may be of interest to you. We and RBC companies may communicate with you through various channels, including telephone, computer or mail, using the contact information you have provided. You acknowledge that as a result of such sharing RBC companies may advise us of the products or services they provide to you.
If you also deal with RBC companies, we may, where not prohibited by law, consolidate information you provide to us with information RBC companies have about you to allow us and RBC companies to manage the relationship with you.
You understand that we and RBC companies are separate, affiliated corporations. RBC companies include our affiliates which are engaged in the business of providing any one or more of the following services to the public: deposits; loans and other personal financial services; credit, charge and payment card services; trust and custodial services; securities and brokerage services; and insurance services.
You may choose not to have your information shared or used for any of these “Other uses” by contacting us as set out below, and in this event, you will not be refused credit or other services just for that reason. We will respect your choices and, as mentioned above, we may share your choices with RBC companies for the sole purpose of honouring your choices regarding “Other uses of your personal information”.

You may obtain access to the information we hold about you at any time and review its content and accuracy, and have it amended as appropriate; however, access may be restricted as permitted or required by law. You may contact us to request access to your information.
