Heading south? Take RBC with you!

  Couple

Whether it’s business or pleasure that takes you to the United States, banking can be complicated for Canadians south of the border. Wouldn’t it be great if you could simply access your Canadian accounts from the U.S.? Or enjoy the convenience of RBC® products and services while you are away for extended periods? Thanks to RBC Access USA™, you can!

This innovative solution from Royal Bank of Canada and RBC Bank (USA) lets you simplify and consolidate your Canadian and U.S. banking, providing a straightforward way to manage personal cross-border finances from either country.

Better access

With RBC Access USA, you can easily access all your Canadian RBC banking accounts, to complete the transactions you need. For example, you can:

  • Transfer money instantly, either online or by telephone, between your RBC Royal Bank account in Canada and RBC Bank® account in the U.S.1
  • Pay U.S. or Canadian bills online, at no extra charge, through either your Canadian or U.S. accounts.
  • Access your accounts through an extensive network of ATMs.
  • Tap into your Canadian credit history to apply for a mortgage, line of credit or credit card in the U.S.
  • Take out an RBC Royal Bank® mortgage to purchase property in the U.S.2
  • Apply for a no-fee U.S. Dollar Visa* Gold card with RBC Rewards®.
  • Get a U.S. safe deposit box.

In addition, you get the convenience that comes with having a U.S. banking institution to take care of your U.S. financial needs. It’s easy to see how this package not only simplifies your cross-border banking, but also saves you time and money.

RBC Access USA is available in two comprehensive packages to suit a range of banking needs. Choose RBC Access USA Service for just US$3.95 a month, or enjoy the added features of RBC Access USA Preferred Service for just US$29.95 a month. For both packages, fees are waived if minimum balances are maintained.

Tips for U.S. travellers

As a Canadian spending time in the U.S., you may need other ways to protect yourself financially. Depending on your reason for travelling, consider these tips:

  • Did you know that if you become ill outside of Canada and don’t have emergency medical insurance, you could be forced to pay a hefty bill out of your own pocket? Travel HealthProtector® insurance can help protect you from the financial burden of illness or injury during your time in the U.S. Coverage is available in single-trip plans and multi-trip annual plans for frequent travelers, and coverage is available for travellers over 60. Travel HealthProtector is a product that is available at any Canadian RBC branch, by phone or online and needs to be purchased prior to departure.
  • Arrange for someone to check up on your home while you are away. Your home/household insurance may require a record of such an arrangement.
  • Never write a postdated cheque in the United States. American regulations do not recognize this practice and it can be costly if you incur overdrafts or charges for insufficient funds.
  • Looking to scoop up a U.S. property? Be sure to check out all the hidden costs, including property tax rates for out-of-state residents and the cost of property insurance, especially in high-risk areas. Also be sure to use a trusted and accredited real estate agent.
  • If you vacation in the U.S. for lengthy periods each year, you may need to file an 8840 Closer Connection Form with the Internal Revenue Service.
  • Consider using RBC Royal Bank Online Banking to arrange for automatic payments to be made for bills or loans while you are away.
