How the Olympic Flame inspires Canadian students

  Students

As models of excellence, unity and leadership, the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games and 2010 Olympic Torch Relay inspire us all. This is especially true for school-age children, who look to our athletes as role models. As it turns out, Canadian youth are a pretty inspiring group themselves!

Bringing the 2010 Olympic Torch Relay to schools

This year, RBC brought the spirit and excitement of the Olympic Games to classrooms across Canada through the 2010 Olympic Torch Relay School Kit and contest.

The curriculum-based kit provides free educational resources to engage students in the excitement of the Olympic Movement. The kit brings the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay to life while meeting provincial learning outcomes in social studies, language arts, math, science and physical activity.

In addition to torch relay-related facts, figures and activities, the 2010 Olympic Torch Relay School kit also included an exciting opportunity for teachers and students across the country to carry the Olympic Flame. Over 400 teachers, coaches and school leaders worked with their students to submit a team or class pledge. Team pledges chronicled how Canadian students are improving their community, becoming more environmentally-friendly, or living healthier lifestyles. Teachers were also provided with resources on topics like the history of the Olympic Flame, fair play and ethics in sport, and exercise science. In addition, the www.olympicschool.ca website features games and learning materials just for kids.

Young peoples' pledges

  • French Immersion students from Harrison Trimble in Dieppe, New Brunswick pledged to help a local seniors’ residence by cleaning the yard and clearing snow from emergency exits during the winter.
  • Twelve students and two teachers from Heritage Regional High School in Saint-Hubert, Quebec, travelled to India to make a documentary, and are now adopting a village, supporting a local charity, and volunteering in elementary schools.
  • A class from Stratford Central Secondary in Stratford, Ontario, have created a food and clothing bank for students in need.
  • A club of about 50 Grade 9 students from Dr. Charles Best Secondary School in Coquitlam, British Columbia, have pledged to make a positive difference to their community through activities like raising money for the Terry Fox Foundation, raising awareness and funds for Juvenile Diabetes, and organizing energy conservation education programs.

Winners across the country

RBC and the COSP will announce the winners in September during the back to school period. There will be 16 team winners, the educators of the winning groups will carry the Olympic Flame in the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay and will select 19 teammates each to run on their teams. Each team will collectively carry the Olympic Flame for one kilometre during a local leg of the 2010 Olympic Torch Relay.

The Canadian Olympic School Program website has lots of fun Canadian Olympic athlete biography videos and educational tools for kids to engage with outside the classroom. Visit with your kids, and inspire the whole family to become more active!
