This lush and mountainous island, discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493 and named for the day of discovery, is the largest of the Windward Islands. Dominica changed hands several times between the French and British in the wars of the mid-1700s before becoming a British possession in 1805. In 1978, Dominica became an independent republic within the Commonwealth. Promoted as "The Nature Island of the Caribbean", Dominica is the proud home of the last remaining descendents of the region's indigenous people, the Carib Indian, and also has the only boiling crater lake in the world. Prince Rupert Bay, at the northwest corner of the island, is considered one of the best anchorages in the West Indies. Principal products are bananas, coconuts, hot sauces, soaps and candles.
RBC Royal Bank of Canada opened for business in Roseau, Dominica on March 15, 1915, with four employees in a hotel building at the corner of Old Street and New Street, now Kennedy Avenue. The bank moved to its present location in the early 1960s when the original building was destroyed by fire. Since introducing computers in 1988, most phases of the bank's operations are fully automated, and today the bank offers all of its customers a full range of personal banking and business services.
