Many organizations are moving to reduce the environmental impact of their operations but the vast majority of businesses are going about business as usual – and that’s putting them at a competitive disadvantage says Canadian sustainability expert and author, Bob Willard.

For those still on the sustainability sidelines or, conversely, looking to make the business case for sustainability within their own organization, Willard sets out seven compelling business benefits, which are grouped into three categories:

1. Eco-efficiency benefits, which encompass savings on energy, water, materials and waste handling, as well as lower manufacturing costs
2. Human resources benefits, which include the ability to better attract top talent, retain top talent and get more productivity from each employee
3. Top-line benefits, which include increased revenue and market share, along with reduced risk and easier financing

“You don’t have to apply them all to realize significant dividends,” says Willard. “The two most powerful are a focus on eco-efficiency and employee productivity.” In fact, inviting employee input and unleashing employee creativity may be the most important tool of all.
