How RBC is lighting up the Olympics

The world is watching – at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games

The Olympic Torch Relay captured the attention of Canadians for the past 106 days, as 12,000 torchbearers carried the flame through communities across our country in the longest host-country torch relay in history.

Now the Olympic Flame has reached its final destination, and our athletes will be the ones to light up the nation as their skill, determination and accomplishments are showcased in the Vancouver 2010 Olympic & Paralympic Winter Games February 12 through 28.

Supporting our athletes

RBC is proud to be a long-standing supporter of the Olympic and Paralympic Games and amateur sport at all levels. Our commitment to athletic support began more than 60 years ago, in 1947.

The RBC Olympians program provides our athletes with funding and flexible work hours, so they are able to dedicate themselves to training and competing. RBC’s support helps them realize their Olympic and Paralympic dreams, while preparing for a career after sport.

And our athletes give back so much! They are dedicated to training hard and representing our country in competition. They are also community ambassadors, sharing their Olympic dreams and stories with students and community groups and inspiring future generations to lead a fit and healthy lifestyle.

Kristi Richards and Jennifer Botterill are two excellent examples of hard-working athletes who have benefited from the RBC Olympians program supporting amateur sport in Canada.

Kristi Richards, freestyle skiing (moguls)

In an event that combines speed, power and grace, Kristi Richards is always seeking to be faster, stronger, more innovative. A two-time Canadian national champion and gold medalist at the 2007 World Cup Championships, Kristi has been competing fiercely over the past several months and is poised for success in Whistler.

Kristi’s favourite sporting moment? “Standing in the gate at the 2006 Olympics in Torino. It felt like all of the hard work and all of the experiences had come together at that moment, and the only job left to do was to simply ski. It was a magical moment that I will hold onto forever.”

Jennifer Botterill, women’s ice hockey (forward)

An Olympic Silver Medalist, two-time Olympic Gold Medalist and a five-time World Champion, Harvard graduate Jennifer Botterill holds a number of other awards including two-time MVP of the World Championships.

Jennifer and her 20 teammates will represent Canada on the Canadian Women’s Ice Hockey Team, competing for their third straight gold medal at the Winter Olympics, following wins in 2002 and 2006.

Jennifer’s favourite sporting moment? “Winning a gold medal at the Olympics and then looking down the line to see all my friends receive gold medals around their necks.”
