Top Canadian Credit Card Questions

Yes. Even if you don’t have a Canadian credit history yet, you may still be eligible for a credit card. Many financial institutions, including RBC, offer newcomer credit cards designed for permanent residents, foreign workers and international students.

These cards may be available as:

  • Unsecured credit cards, which don’t require an upfront deposit
  • Secured credit cards, which require a refundable deposit (often equal to your credit limit)

Once you’ve opened an RBC Advantage bank account, you can apply for a credit card online or book an appointment with an advisor at a nearby branch.

Using a credit card and paying off the balance in full and on time is one of the easiest ways to start building a credit history in Canada.

Your credit limit will depend on factors such as your income, financial history and the type of card you apply for.

If you’re new to Canada, you may start with a lower credit limit while you build your credit history. In some cases, you may qualify for a higher limit – for instance, up to $15,000* on the RBC Cash Back Mastercard – depending on your situation.

As you use your card responsibly and make payments on time, you may become eligible for a credit limit increase.

Credit cards make it easy to make purchases in-store online, but they offer plenty other benefits too. A credit card:

  • Helps you build your credit history in Canada
  • Comes with security features to protect your money and information
  • May allow you to earn rewards such as points, cash back and travel rewards

Might give you access to deals and discounts to save you money and enjoy certain perks

When you earn cash back, you earn a percentage of your everyday credit card purchases back as real money. For example, with the RBC Cash Back Mastercard, newcomers can earn 12% cash back for three months, which is deposited directly into your RBC bank account or applied as a statement credit.

Thinking about applying for an RBC credit card? As a newcomer, the easiest way to get started is to call an RBC Newcomer Advisor at 1-866-756-1107 or book an appointment at your local RBC branch.

When you apply, you’ll need to have a few personal details ready: your legal name, date of birth, contact information, SIN, address, employment status, income source(s) and your monthly rent or mortgage payment. Since you’re new to Canada, RBC will also need to verify your status using original government-issued documents (not photocopies), such as your passport, driver’s licence, Permanent Resident (PR) card or work permit.

Also, be sure to bring two pieces of valid ID with you when you come into a branch.

Frequently Asked Questions

In Canada, lenders look at your credit history to decide whether to approve you and what interest rate to offer. A strong record can make it easier to get approved for things like a phone plan, car loan or mortgage – often at better rates. Because newcomers usually arrive without a Canadian credit file, a newcomer credit card is one of the simplest ways to start building credit history here.

Canadian credit scores generally fall between 300 and 900. A score in the mid-600s and up is usually viewed as good, and higher ranges open the door to better borrowing rates. Your score reflects factors like whether you pay on time, how much of your available credit you use and how long you’ve had credit.

Two national credit bureaus – Equifax and TransUnion – calculate your score from the information in your credit report. Payment history, total debt and the length of your credit history all play a role in calculating your credit score.

A secured credit card requires a refundable deposit, which is typically the equivalent of your credit limit. An unsecured card does not need a deposit, though it might come with a lower limit. Either type of card can help you build a Canadian credit history when used responsibly.

Yes. Students have card options built for their needs, often with no annual fee. The RBC ION+ Visa, for example, rebates the annual fee for students and anyone 24 or younger6.

When you pay with a credit card, you’re borrowing money and then repaying it. Paying it back on time and in full shows lenders you can manage credit responsibly. Over time, this consistent pattern builds a positive credit history.

Using your credit card regularly and then paying the full balance on time each month is an effective way to build your credit history. To avoid getting into credit card debt, there are a few key habits to get into: spend within a budget, keep your balance well below your limit, avoid applying for several products at once, and monitor your balance. This is easy to do through RBC Online Banking or the RBC Mobile app.

The minimum payment is the smallest amount you can pay by the due date to keep your account in good standing and avoid late fees. Paying only the minimum means interest builds on the remaining balance, so paying the full amount each month is the best way to avoid interest charges altogether.

Yes. You can add an additional cardholder who receives their own card linked to your account. Their purchases count towards your shared credit limit. You can set up an additional cardholder through RBC Online Banking or by speaking with a representative at an RBC branch.

Spending past your limit can lead to declined purchases, over-limit fees and possibly a dip in your credit score. Keeping an eye on your balance and staying within your limit helps protect your credit as you build it.

A credit card lets you borrow money from a bank or lender. You are expected to pay back what you spent by a set due date – if you don’t, you’ll be charged interest, which is a percentage of the amount you borrow, on top of your balance.

Each card also comes with a credit limit. A $5,000 limit, for instance, means you can spend up to $5,000 before you have to pay some of it down.

Some cards come with an annual fee, and some do not – it depends on the card you choose.

A card with an annual fee may offer additional benefits, while a no-fee card can be a good option if you’re just getting started. You can explore RBC’s no-annual-fee cards or use our RBC Credit Card Selector Tool to find one that fits your needs.

To see a breakdown of annual fees for all our credit cards, visit our Annual Fee Comparison page.

Your credit history is a record of how you’ve managed credit over time, such as by paying off loans, credit cards, or other bills on time. This history is captured in your credit report.

Based on that report, you’ll get a credit score, typically ranging from 300 to 900. A higher credit score signifies a better credit history and shows lenders you’re reliable when borrowing money.

You can make a payment through any of the methods below:

  • RBC Online Banking
  • RBC Mobile app
  • automated payments (so you’ll never need to worry about making your payment on time)
  • by phone
  • by mail
  • in person at an RBC branch
  • at an RBC Royal Bank ATM

Keep in mind that payments aren’t always reflected instantly. Depending on the method, it can take up to a few business days for a payment to be received, processed and applied to your balance – and payments made from a non-RBC account may take a little longer. If you’re paying close to your due date, it’s worth allowing extra time so the payment is received on time.

Yes. If you ever experience credit card fraud, you’re protected – provided you’ve taken reasonable steps to keep your card and PIN secure.

If something doesn’t look right, call 1-800-769-2512 right away, and we’ll be happy to help you. Zero Liability policies from Visa and Mastercard also protect you from unauthorized transactions, whether they happen online or in-store.

This offer only applies to new applications for an RBC ION+ Visa credit card received between June 16, 2026 and November 4, 2026 (“Offer Period”) and approved by Royal Bank of Canada (“Royal Bank”), subject to the conditions below. Additional cardholders(s) (co-applicant and authorized user(s)) on the RBC ION+ Visa credit card account, as well as existing cardholders on any RBC Royal Bank personal credit card transferring to an RBC ION+ Visa credit card during the Offer Period, are not eligible for this offer.

7,000 Avion points (“Welcome Points”) will appear on your monthly credit card statement within sixty (60) days after your application has been approved, provided that your RBC ION+ Visa credit card account (“Credit Card Account”) remains open and in good standing at the time the Welcome points are credited to your account, “good standing” meaning that your Credit Card Account must not be past due for more than two (2) consecutive credit card account statement periods, closed, charged off or in credit revoked status.

14,000 additional Avion points (“Additional Points”) will be awarded to you if a total of $1,500 or more (“Qualifying Transaction Amount”) in qualifying net purchases and/or pre-authorized bill payment transactions (“Qualifying Transactions”) are posted to your RBC ION+ Visa credit card account within the first 6 months from the date of your credit card account open date (“Period”), provided your account is open and in good standing at the time the Additional Points are posted to your Credit Card Account, approximately 60 days after you reached the Qualifying Transaction Amount. Qualifying Transactions exclude cash advances (including balance transfers, cash-like transactions and bill payments that are not pre-authorized charges that you set up with a merchant), interest charges, and fees. Any credits for returns and adjustments that reduce the amount of Qualifying Transactions below $1,500 will cancel your Additional Avion points.

The Qualifying Transaction Amount is based on the transaction posting date of each Qualifying Transaction, not the transaction date. This means that transactions that take place prior to the last day of the Period will not be considered for the Qualifying Transaction Amount if they have not yet been posted or processed by the merchant, the payment network (Visa) or Royal Bank by the last day of the Period.

7,000 additional Avion points (“Anniversary Points”) will appear on your monthly credit card statement within twelve (12) to sixteen (16) weeks after the one- year anniversary of your Credit Card Account opening, provided that your Credit Card Account remains open and in good standing at the time the Anniversary Points are credited to your account.

This offer may not be combined or used in conjunction with any other offer. Royal Bank reserves the right to cancel, modify or withdraw this offer at any time without notice, even after your application has been approved, including if we suspect that you may be manipulating or abusing it, or engaging in any suspicious or fraudulent activity, as determined by Royal Bank in its sole discretion. You will receive 20,000 bonus Avion points (“Bonus Points”) if a total of $5,000 or more (“Qualifying Transaction Amount”) in qualifying net purchases and/or pre-authorized bill payment transactions (“Qualifying Transactions”) are posted to your Eligible Credit Card account within the first six (6) months from your Eligible Credit Card account opening date (“Period”).
